Concentrations

Corporate Communications (Marketing and/or Public Relations)

The Corporate Communications concentration prepares students as professional communicators for the challenges presented by commercial and non-profit organizations.  Students may combine Marketing and Public Relations or chose to focus on one of the two. Marketing Communications merges expertise in communications and promotions with courses from the business department including marketing and advertising.Public Relations develops those skills necessary for creating and disseminating information for internal or external audiences of an organization. Requirements are: Communications 333, 351, 358 or 412, plus either two additional communication electives or one communications elective and one business elective from the following set of courses: Communications 304, 316, 348, and 408, Business Administration 215, 265, 311, 312, 319.
   

Mass Communications

The Mass Communications concentration educates students for professional positions in the mass media industry, such as print, broadcast, and Internet based media. With a foundation in writing for the media, the student has a variety of options for production, writing and media management courses. Required are Communications 316, 336 and two approved electives to be chosen from the following: Communications 304, 310, 315, 333, 336, 348, 422, 424, and 426.


New Media Communications (digital media and web design)

The New Media Concentration merges traditional communications with today’s technology.  Through the use of digital media, and web design students will gain knowledge and a competitive edge in areas such as writing for new media, digital media convergence and design and broadcast programming and design. Requires Communications 310, 315, 426, and two approved electives from the following set of courses: Communications 316, 333, 336, 348, 358, 408, and 422.


Cultural Studies Communications

Cultural Studies Concentration is more traditional approach to communications that prepares students for successful interaction in today’s world through the study of subjects including International, Multi-Cultural and Interpersonal/Group Communications. Requires Communications 251, 252, 301, plus either two additional communications electives or one communication elective and one interdisciplinary elective from the following set of courses: Communications 304, 316, 333, 336, 348, 408, 422, and 424. If choosing an interdisciplinary elective, it must be compliment the student's plan of study and be approved by the advisor and Department Chair prior to the student's registration.
