PPST (PRAXIS I) Information

PPST: Reading, Writing and Mathematics tests must be successfully competed in order to gain Formal Acceptance into the Education Program. Education majors will be asked to apply for Formal Acceptance in the semester when they will complete at least 54 credits. For most students, this would be during the second semester of Sophomore year. Tests must be completed and reports of passing scores received by the Department of Education at the end of that semester as part of the application. Failure to obtain Formal Acceptance will result in the student not being permitted to continue in their Education Program.

First Year Students: The PPST tests are designed to test general knowledge. Students are encouraged to take the tests as soon as possible after they decide to pursue Education as a major.

Sophomores: It takes up to 5 weeks after the test for the Department of Education to receive the score report. For the scores to reach Etown in time for them to be included in your Formal application, the last test date to take the test is mid-March. In the event one or more of the test s are not passed, there would be further delay due to the need to retake the test and limitations on test dates. This is something students need to take care of as soon as possible. Students who have 54 or more credits and have not been Formally Accepted into the Education Program are not permitted to take courses with an ED prefix.

General Information about the PPST tests: The PPST test s can be taken as a paper and pencil test in a group setting on a Saturday morning at a test site (Lebanon Valley College, Harrisburg Area Community College and Millersville University are the closest test sites to Elizabethtown). The test setting is similar to taking SAT’s. Test dates for 2009-2010 are September 12th, November 14th, January 9th, March 13th, April 24th, June 12th and July 24th.  Registration for the test s is due about a month before the test date. Please note that Elizabethtown College is on winter break during the January test.  Keep this in mind when choosing a test site. To be scheduled at the test site of first choice, students are encouraged to register well in advance of the date of the test. Register at www.ets.org/praxis.

Another option is a computer based test . The test taker calls a test center (most are Sylvan Learning or Prometric Centers ) to register. The test can be taken most weeks Monday through Saturday. 1pm is the la test appointment. It can take anywhere from two days to six weeks to schedule an exam.  A complete list of test sites is available at www.ets.org/praxis.

Computer Based Tests cannot be repeated in the same month in which they were taken (a test failed in May cannot be retaken until June). The date of the CBT and traditional test s have no bearing on one another. This means that, if a student fails a test taken in traditional form, s/he can take the CBT test as soon as it can be scheduled. Similarly, if a student fails a test taken in CBT form, s/he can take the traditional test as soon as a test date is available.

More information regarding Praxis tests can be located on the bulletin board outside the Education Office or by stopping in to the Education Office, Nicarry 143.
