Programs
B.S. in Elementary Education
The department offers a major program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree and Pennsylvania certification in Elementary Education (K-6). These programs combine strong attention to the liberal arts and sciences with the development of high professional competence. Supported by the Core Program, a required minor or concentration, and elective course work, these major programs bring together in a creative way the student, the school, and the subjects to be taught. Further, the department stresses the importance of supervised field experiences that complement on-campus courses in Education.
Concentrations:
- Early Childhood Education (Certification)
- Special Education K-12 (Certification)
- Behavior Management
- Urban Education
- Special Needs
Programs in secondary education are available in selected academic areas (English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and special interdisciplinary majors in Social Studies). Carefully designed work in the academic or interdisciplinary major, the Core Program, and electives qualifies students for the degree appropriate to that major and for Pennsylvania certification for grades 7-12 in that subject.
Bachelor of Music in Music Education
A major and Pennsylvania certification are available in Music Education (K-12). Here, too, in-depth work in the major teamed with completion of Core Program and elective courses leads to the awarding of the degree and certification. (See Department of Fine and Performing Arts for more information.)
