Gas Leaks

  1. Call the UGI at 800-609-4844. Explain the nature of the problem and the company will dispatch a technician if necessary. UGI is open 24 hours per day.
  2. Evacuate the building if the gas leak is inside. Consider the need to evacuate other buildings as well.
  3. In general, windows should be left open and electrical equipment should not be turned on or off. If time permits, open flames (pilot lights, Bunsen burners) should be extinguished.
  4. If the gas leak is outside, prevailing wind direction should be considered in the need to evacuate buildings. Without placing people at risk, open flames should be extinguished.
  5. Contact Facilities to have the building and/or the section gas valve turned off to stop further gas leakage.
  6. If Facilities cannot stop the flow of gas, UGI should be contacted immediately to provide necessary assistance.
  7. Once the gas flow has been stopped and the problem corrected, Facilities Management should be notified to conduct environmental tests in the affected buildings to determine concentrations of natural gas.
  8. If concentrations are lower than the lower explosion limit, but higher than permissible exposure levels (PEL), fans should be placed in the buildings until concentrations are lower than the PEL.
  9. Once it has been determined that the buildings are safe, equipment can be turned on, and students and employees can return to classes and work stations.
