Call the UGI at 800-609-4844. Explain the nature of the problem and the company will dispatch a technician if necessary. UGI is open 24 hours per day.
-
Evacuate the building if the gas leak is inside. Consider the need to evacuate other buildings as well.
-
In general, windows should be left open and electrical equipment should not be turned on or off. If time permits, open flames (pilot lights, Bunsen burners) should be extinguished.
-
If the gas leak is outside, prevailing wind direction should be considered in the need to evacuate buildings. Without placing people at risk, open flames should be extinguished.
-
Contact Facilities to have the building and/or the section gas valve turned off to stop further gas leakage.
-
If Facilities cannot stop the flow of gas, UGI should be contacted immediately to provide necessary assistance.
-
Once the gas flow has been stopped and the problem corrected, Facilities Management should be notified to conduct environmental tests in the affected buildings to determine concentrations of natural gas.
-
If concentrations are lower than the lower explosion limit, but higher than permissible exposure levels (PEL), fans should be placed in the buildings until concentrations are lower than the PEL.
-
Once it has been determined that the buildings are safe, equipment can be turned on, and students and employees can return to classes and work stations.
