About the Golf Program
The golf team has been consistently competitive in the Middle Atlantic Conference since the sport was reactivated at Elizabethtown in 1988. Golf became an intercollegiate sport in 1965 under the direction of Coach Ted Roscher; after 12 seasons, the sport was discontinued in 1978.
Coach Royal Snavely guided the Blue Jays to a 31-15 record in dual match play from 1988-93. His teams won 25 consecutive matches from 1990 to 1992, while compiling three straight unbeaten campaigns. The 1990 and 1992 teams finished fifth, and Greg Millen '88 finished second in the MAC championships in 1988. He competed in the 1988 NCAA Division III championships, placing 25th out of 120 golfers. He holds the College record for lowest per round scoring (77.8) in a season.
Keith Marks took over the program in 1995, and guided the team to a 23-15 dual match mark over six seasons, including a 7-3 record in 1997. Malcolm Jackson took over in the 2001 season, with Marks remaining on board as assistant coach.
Marks took over the head coaching position again in the 2002-03 academic year and promptly led the team to a fourth place finish at the 2003 MAC championships, the team's highest finish since 1996. The Blue Jays also won a pair of invitationals in 2003. Throughout the past ten years, Etown has consistently ranked among the top teams in the MAC.
Joe Shull '93 finished third at the MAC championship tournament in 1992. Ben Smith '98 posted Elizabethtown's hightest finish in the MAC tournament by winning the title in 1995. He also finished 3rd in 1996. Christian Ehrhart '00 also finished in the top 10 at the MAC championship, placing ninth in 2000. Etown placed two golfers, Charlie Haines '04 and Chris Bowen-Ashwin '03, in the top ten at the MAC championship in 2003, as they finished fourth and ninth, respectively. It was the first time since 1975 that two Blue Jay golfers finished in the top ten at the MAC championships.
Elizabethtown plays its home matches at the Hershey Golf Club in Hershey Pa. The stunning course has hosted PGA championships and is the site of the annual LPGA Lady Keystone Open, as well as the host of a spot on the Buy.com Tour.
