Antibiotics Overload
According to guidelines from a panel of physicians assembled by the CDC, doctors should not prescribe antibiotics for most colds, coughs, and sore throats. The group recently announced the new guidelines in response to growing concerns that overuse of antibiotics are helping germs become resistant to drugs. The guidelines also recommend not prescribing antibiotics for sinus infection until after the first 7 days, since they will often resolve without help. And sore throats should only be treated with antibiotics if the patient tests positive for Strep throat or, the case meets certain criteria that are suggestive of Strep throat. Patients should not think they are getting poor treatment if their doctor doesn't prescribe antibiotics. It was reported that the main reason physicians are feeling pressured to over-prescribe is because patients are demanding it. Reducing antibiotics resistance really takes a renewed societal perspective. Web sites:
