Remote Access Dial-in Service Update

I wanted to let you know that it is our intent to discontinue the dial-in service in the near future. Many people have been getting Internet access at home and therefore the use of our dial-in modem pool has diminished. I am somewhat concerned about the life of the equipment used to support the dial-in service as it is old and could fail at any time. Because of its age, we may have trouble getting it serviced. I am also concerned about the $5000 per year cost of supporting this service. For similar reasons, many colleges discontinued their dial-in services several or more years ago and I think it is time to discontinue our service.

It is my intent to discontinue our dial-in service on June 30. You may still use your Elizabethtown College email account from off-campus after June 30 (2007), but you will have to access it via your own Internet Service Provider (ISP).  Information on multiple ISPs is listed below to assist you in selecting an appropriate option.

If you have questions or concerns about this message, please feel free to write to me at heaslerp@etown.edu

Sincerely,

Ron Heasley

We put together this list of internet service providers to help guide you through the selection process. Your internet service provider decision should be based on expectations of speed and how much you are willing to pay for monthly service. High-speed or broadband service is more expensive, but is vastly superior to dial-up. Broadband is “always on” and opens up new opportunities for accessing the Internet from home including, custom content portals, video services, and a VPN connection to the college to do work faster and more efficiently! In addition to connection to the internet, most of these Internet service providers offer email and web accounts as well as the ability to connect in other cities while traveling.

This may seem confusing, but signing up and setting up is pretty easy.

Here are three levels of service options:

High-Speed Broadband Options

  • If you have Embarq for your home telephone service, they offer DSL services for $14.95 to $34.95 per month depending on speed.
  • If you have Verizon for your home telephone service, they offer DSL services for $14.95 to $29.99 per month depending on speed.
  • If you have Comcast cable TV service, they offer broadband for a range of prices depending of types and quantities of services you select.

Low Speed Dial-up options

These services will offer the same type of service and speed as what you are accustomed to by dialing in to the college. These services typically cost between $4.95 and $9.95 per month.

Signing up is easy and fast and the info is provided at these links.
