FAQ: Peer Tutoring

Who uses a tutor?
All students can use a tutor from those earning an "A" in a course and wanting to maintain it to those having difficulty with coursework.

How long is a session?
Sessions are usually an hour, but times can be adjusted to meet the needs of the tutee.  Marathon sessions are usually frowned upon since most people learn best in shorter amounts of time.

How do I become a tutor?

Earn an "A" or "A-" in a course and recommend yourself or wait to be recommended by a professor.  To recommend yourself, come into Learning Services and ask for the paperwork to become a tutor.  Attend an orientation and a training session.  Register each semester thereafter at an update session and attend any training sessions held for all tutors.

Do I have to pay for a tutor?

Tutoring is free for full-time students; part-time studentes are required to pay $7.45 an hour.

How far in advance should I sign up for a tutoring session?

Signing up for a tutor at least 48 hours in advance increases the likelihood that a tutor is found in time for a session.

Do all classes have tutors?

Not all classes have tutors, but most lower-level courses do.  New courses and new professors may not have tutors.  Sometimes a current student who is doing well in these classes is recommended to tutor.

Where are the tutoring sessions held?

Most sessions are held in Learning Services.  Those that require materials, equipment, or facilities not available in Learning Services may be held where those items are available.

May I request a specific tutor?

Yes.

How should I prepare for a tutoring session?

Bring books, notes, and questions.

Should I let my professor know that I have used a tutor?

If you feel your professor would like that you have gone the extra mile to do well in the course, you should complete a form which allows Learning Services to inform the professor that you have had a tutoring session.

Do you have tutors who can help with computer questions?

Yes, a computer consultant is proficient in selected software.

How do I get help with studying?

The peer tutor can suggest strategies.  You can make an appointment with the Learning Services Director who can share strategies for reading, note taking, test taking, and studying.



FAQ: Writing Consulting


What does a writing consultant do?

A writing consultant is trained to help you with any stage of your paper.  By asking questions, a writing consultant helps you organize, develop, rethink, and/or edit your paper.  Persons should seek assistance in sufficient time before a paper is due.

How do I get a writing consultant?

By appointment or use the walk-in services. Link to our hours page to find out when the writing consultants will be at Learning Services. 

Is the service free?

Yes, for full-time students.  Part-time students are required to pay $7.45 an hour.

How do I become a writing consultant?

Wait to be recommended by a professor or recommend yourself.  Complete an application and have three references completed and submitted.  Interview and be accepted.  Attend approximately eight hours of training the first semester and attend a Saturday morning session each semester thereafter.
