Men's Lacrosse: 2009 Preview

The Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team will aim to build upon the momentum it created at the end of the 2008 season, when the squad won four of its last five games to finish with a winning 4-3 record in conference play.

Seven starters are back for fourth-year head coach Terry Corcoran from last season's squad, including junior midfielder Aaron Weber (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township), a tri-captain who has been named a preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse.

As a first-year player, Weber led Elizabethtown in scoring with 35 goals and 36 assists in 2007. Despite being hampered by injuries the first half of 2008, Weber still scored 22 goals and added 15 assists for 37 points to rank second on the team.

The attack will be led by three-year starter and senior tri-captain Ryan McCafferty (Orlando, FL/Boone), who led the team with 31 goals and 40 points, and sophomore Greg Kenneally (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) who added four goals and 12 assists for 16 points.

The unit suffered a blow when sophomore Kurt Deschner (Kelowna, BC/Kelowna Secondary) suffered a season-ending injury in the fall, depriving the Blue Jays of the 14 goals and 10 assists he contributed last season.

Incoming players expected to make an impact on the attack are Evan Cobb (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville), Sean O'Neil (Philadelphia, PA/Bishop Shanahan), Ben Erdman (Herndon, PA/Susquehannock), Drew Stitt (Easton, PA/Moravian Academy) and DJ Kohl (Denver, PA/Cocalico).

Weber leads a host of veteran returnees in the midfield, as he will be joined by juniors Jon Day (Thornton, PA/Bishop Shanahan), Keith Staulters (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa), Josh Dougherty (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) and Kyle Huckle (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca).

Day led the team with 106 faceoff wins, 79 ground balls and five man-up goals last season while scoring 24 goals. Staulters added eight goals and seven assists while Dougherty chipped in with 13 goals, including three with the man advantage.

Sophomores Shakir Saunders (Bethesda, MD/Cheshire Academy, CT), Brian Schaaf (West Chester, PA/East), Brent Campbell (Baltimore, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) and Ben Landis (Talmage, PA/Conestoga Valley) all saw action last year.

Freshmen midfielders Derek Neiheiser (Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser), Derek Karsten (Ephrata, PA/Cocalico), Andrew Venet (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley), and Dan Patton (Media, PA/Penncrest) will all add depth to the midfield. Transfers Corey Toby (Norwalk, CT/Brien McMahon) and Shawn Corcoran (Hershey, PA/Hershey) will also bring more competition to this unit.

On defense, senior Dan Hinder (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll School) and junior Chris Day (Thornton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) return to the starting lineup. Hinder started all 14 games and collected 26 ground balls, while Day made 13 starts and picked up 60 ground balls to rank second on the team to his brother, Jon.

They will be joined by senior Jeff Long (West Chester, PA/Henderson), junior Nick Andrews (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and sophomore returnees Mike Kenneally (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield), Roberto Zambrana (Upper Darby, PA/Upper Darby) and Mike McGraw (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven). First-year players Brian Wenger (Kingsville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and Griffin Lewis (Glen Rock, PA/Susquehannock) will also add depth to the defense.

Junior Phil Robinson (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) and sophomore Matt Oberly (Stevens, PA/Cocalico) will play in the defensive midfield as long poles.

Senior Austin Hayes (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) and sophomore Hunter Malick (Center Valley, PA/Moravian Academy) both saw time in the goal last year. Hayes appeared in five games and made 23 saves, while Malick started five contests and posted a 9.55 goals against average and 49 saves. They will be joined by first-year goalie Brendan Corcoran (Hershey, PA/Western Reserve Academy, OH).

The Blue Jays open their 2009 season on Wednesday, March 4 at Guilford College during the squad's Spring Break trip. The home opener is against Moravian College on Sunday, March 9 while the 10-game MAC schedule gets underway at home on Saturday, March 14 against Widener University.
