The major in Spanish with Education Certification (K-12) at Elizabethtown College guides students to become:
· proficient users of the Spanish language
· culturally competent participants in Spanish-speaking cultures
· highly qualified teachers of Spanish
· civically engaged global citizens
The Spanish teacher preparation journey includes the following major components: Core courses and state requirements, Spanish courses, Education courses, one year of study abroad, intercultural and international experiences, student teaching, and capstone experiences in both Spanish and Education.
Core courses provide students with a common first year experience and a broad knowledge base across nine essential areas of understanding. State requirements include English and Mathematics courses.
Spanish courses in advanced conversation, advanced grammar and composition, linguistics, culture, and literature prepare the students to spend the junior year abroad and study syntax, morphology, phonetics, writing, speaking, history, art, culture, and literature, as well as participate in language classroom observations and immersion in intercultural experiences. During the senior year, the students actively engage in a research project on a topic of personal interest, in close collaboration with a Modern Languages professor.
Education courses in development and learning, cognition, inclusive education, linguistic and cultural diversity, and teaching methods prepare the students for the professional internships, or student teaching experiences. The senior seminar and exit defense of the professional portfolio provide the capstone, reflective experiences that help the students solidify their identities as professional educators.
All Elizabethtown College students encounter various opportunities for civic engagement throughout their program of study, and in Spanish Education these experiences are tailored specifically for the future Spanish teacher.
Essential and rigorous assessments serve as checkpoints along the Spanish Education teacher preparation journey. These include: an oral proficiency exam before studying abroad, a second oral proficiency exam after studying abroad, the Praxis Fundamental Subjects: Content Knowledge exam, the Praxis Spanish: Content Knowledge exam, the Spanish major portfolio, and the Education professional portfolio exit defense.
The Spanish Education program at Elizabethtown College is a standards-based program that strives to follow the:
