Gary Hoffman, chair and associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry

 

Hoffman earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Williams and then worked at Thermo Electron Corp. as a research scientist. He later earned a master’s degree in physics and a doctorate in chemical physics from Harvard University.

 

Hoffman worked as a post-doctoral fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratories for three years before joining the faculty at Florida International University (FIU), where he earned tenure and served as chair of the chemistry department. He also received a Teaching Incentive Award for excellence in teaching from FIU and served for two years as chair of the South Florida section of the American Chemical Society. He came to Elizabethtown College in 2002. Hoffman has published 24 papers in refereed journals, has made 24 professional presentations and has been awarded about $200,000 in funding for his research.
