E-town College psychology prof to discuss relationship between mental imagery, perception

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – An Elizabethtown College psychology professor will present "Imagining and Seeing: How the ‘Mind’s Eye’ Biases Perception" at 11 a.m., April 20, in Leffler Chapel and Performance Center. The talk by Catherine Lemley is open to the public free of charge.

Lemley studies how mental visual images can interfere with the ability to see and can also interact with the visual system to create false perceptions. Most recently, she has demonstrated that visual imagery can even bias attitudes.

Lemley earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgia’s Columbus College and a doctorate in experimental psychology, with a specialty in visual perception, from Northeastern University. She taught for two years at Gettysburg College before joining the faculty at Elizabethtown College, where she is associate professor of psychology and former chair of the department. While at Elizabethtown, she has supervised research and participated in dozens of professional presentations with psychology majors. Lemley also holds an appointment at the Pennsylvania State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, where she is associate professor of neurology.

At Elizabethtown College -- central Pennsylvania’s premier small, comprehensive college -- 1850 men and women enjoy personal attention, breadth of curriculum, experiential learning and a commitment to serving others. Elizabethtown has been ranked for 11 consecutive years by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top comprehensive colleges in the North.
