E-town College Symphonic Band concert to feature folk songs
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – A Dec. 4 concert by Elizabethtown College’s Symphonic Band will feature folks songs and music. "The Voice of the People" will begin at 3 p.m. in Leffler Chapel and Performance Center and is open to the public free of charge.
During the last centuries, collectors of folk songs have imbued musical culture with a rich heritage of melodies, rhythms, stories and anecdotes, taken from the songs of ordinary -- and not so ordinary -- people, according to Band Director and Assistant Professor of Music Jessica Kun. "English song collectors branded folk songs ‘the voice of the people’ and sought every possible version of every song still alive," she said. "Composers have borrowed from the musical elements of another culture and taken folk music into their own personal style since the beginning of time."
The concert’s program will take audience members across the globe to experience many styles of music derived from folk songs and music, including Copland’s "Fanfare For The Common Man," Vaughan Williams’s "English Folk Song Suite," Whitacre’s "October," Gorb’s "Dances from Crete," Chance’s "Variations on a Korean Folk Song," Carroll’s "Song of Lir," Reed’s "Armenian Dances" and Holsinger’s "Consider the Uncommon Man."
At Elizabethtown College -- central Pennsylvania’s premier small, comprehensive college -- 1800 men and women enjoy personal attention, breadth of curriculum, experiential learning and a commitment to serving others. Elizabethtown has been ranked for 12 consecutive years by "U.S. News and World Report" as one of the top comprehensive colleges in the North.
