The Residence Life staff maximizes these on these learning moments through residential education programming and community development opportunities. For students who are looking for a deeper learning experience we offer Living and Learning Communities within the residence halls and Student Directed Communities (SDLC) in independent style housing.
Please browse this site and let us know if you have any questions. Thank you for your time and we hope we can make your Living and Learning experience the best possible!
What is a Living and Learning Community?
A Living and Learning Community (LLC) is a small group of students who share a common interest or academic major and who live together on the same floor of a residence hall. Students in LLCs often take 1 class together and meet regularly for fun activities related to their shared interest.
Living and Learning communities are a purposeful attempt to integrate curricular and co-curricular experiences that complement and extend classroom learning. Each community is built around a specific course(s) or area interest and is structured so students have a high degree of involvement in its formation. Learning Communities foster faculty and resident interaction that enhances both intellectual and personal growth of its residents. A closeness and sense of community naturally forms in Living and Learning Communities because of the common interest that the residents share from the onset of the academic year. Also, because each community has a unique area of concentration, students work hand-in-hand with hall staff to create programs that focus on their specific needs and interests.
Why should you join an LLC? Consider this - students who live in an LLC:
• Become part of the Elizabethtown community more quickly
• Build friendships with people who have similar interests and academic goals
• Participate in a variety of social and educational activities
• Interact with professors and staff outside of the classroom
• Earn higher grades
• Stay in college longer and graduate sooner
• Express greater satisfaction with their college experience
• Have fun learning!
HOW DO I JOIN A LIVING AND LEARNING COMMUNITY?
All students may apply for the GLACATION and GEMS Living and Learning Community during the month of January. These two LLCs are for returning residents and require an application to be submitted. Applications will be available on our website and in the Office of Residence Life. Spaces are limited, so students are urged to complete their applications as soon as possible!
The Honors, PIE and Simple Living LLCs are for first year students. If you are an incoming, accepted Elizabethtown Honors student, you can live on the same floor with other Honor students in your First Year Seminar. Incoming Engineering students may decide to live with other Engineering students for the first year. The Simple Living Community is based on students who enroll in this First Year Seminar.
In addition to the Living and Learning Communities, the Office of Residence Life offers two types of Lifestyle Floors: Wellness/Substance Free and Quiet Study. Students who select to live on these floors are looking for that particular type of atmosphere. RAs on the floor will offer programs however there are no programs related to the theme of the community.
