Living and Learning Communities
2008-2009 Academic Year
The Office of Residence Life strives to provide a residential experience that supports the academic mission of Elizabethtown College, while ensuring a safe and supportive environment. Providing educational opportunities for students to grow and develop is a primary focus of the department. Our Living and Learning Communities serve this purpose.
Living and Learning communities are a purposeful attempt to integrate curricular and co-curricular experiences that complement and extend classroom learning. Each community is built around a specific course(s) or area interest and is structured so students have a high degree of involvement in its formation. Learning Communities foster faculty and resident interaction that enhances both intellectual and personal growth of its residents. A closeness and sense of community naturally forms in Living and Learning Communities because of the common interest that the residents share from the onset of the academic year. Also, because each community has a unique area of concentration, students work hand-in-hand with hall staff to create programs that focus on their specific needs and interests.
Each community will establish community standards that support their particular needs and interests. The Residence Life staff supports these particular needs and interests through educational programming efforts involving students, faculty, staff, and members of the local community.
Through their daily interaction, residents of LLC’s share their experiences, develop their social and academic support networks, and create unique opportunities for learning in the residential environment.
In addition to the Living and Learning Communities, the Office of Residence Life offers two types of Lifestyle Floors: Wellness/Substance Free and Quiet Study. Students who select to live on these floors are looking for that particular type of atmosphere. RAs on the floor will offer programs however there are no programs related to the theme of the community.
