The Dale W. Brown Book Award
for Outstanding Scholarship
in Anabaptist and Pietist Studies


Congratulations to 2008 award recipient
Willard M. Swartley for
Covenant of Peace:
The Missing Peace in New Testament Theology and Ethics
(Wm. B. Eerdmans, 2006)


Swartley will present a lecture on his book at the Young Center on Thursday, October 16, 2008, at 7:30 p.m.


Nominations for the 2009 award are now being accepted.


The Dale W. Brown Book Award is designed to:

  1. stimulate research in Anabaptist and Pietist scholarship,
  2. honor scholars who have made original and significant contributions, 
  3. promote important books in Anabaptist and Pietist studies, and
  4. bring authors to campus to interact with students, faculty, and friends of the Young Center.

Eligible Books

  1. The work must be published in English within the past three years (2006, 2007, 2008). 
  2. The work may be in any academic discipline.
  3. The work must address a historical or contemporary subject in Anabaptist or Pietist studies.

Nomination Procedures 

  1. Works may be nominated by publishers, editors, authors, institutions, and colleagues.
  2. A short letter of nomination and one copy of the book should be sent to Jeff Bach, Director, The Young Center, by December 10, 2008. Books will not be returned to the nominator(s).

Review Process 

  1. The judges will consist of the director of the Young Center or his/her designee, and two independent scholars. 
  2. The director will select three finalist works which the judges will read to determine the award. 
  3. The decision of the judges will be final. 
  4. The Young Center reserves the right not to make an award if no work is of sufficient quality.

Criteria for Evaluation

Nominated books will be judged by their

  1. originality and creativity, 
  2. quality of scholarship, 
  3. organization and clarity of writing,
  4. significance and importance of the topic, and 
  5. enduring contribution to Anabaptist and Pietist Studies.

The Award

The award will be announced in April 2009 at the Young Center banquet. The author will receive a citation and an invitation to present a public lecture at the Young Center in the fall of 2008. The award will cover all costs related to the lecture and an honorarium.
