Information For

The Accounting Program

A Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting will prepare you for a career in corporate accounting, public accounting, financial analysis, auditing, private industry, government and nonprofit organizations, banking, and treasury operations – or for entry into graduate or law school. As an accounting major at Elizabethtown College, you will gain proficiency in accounting, as well as develop a strong business core foundation. Classroom methods include lectures, case studies and group projects.

150-Hour CPA Requirement

The Accounting program at Elizabethtown College meets Pennsylvania's education requirements for the CPA exam. In order to become a licensed certified public accountant, most states require 150-credits of coursework in addition to a bachelor's degree and passing the CPA exam. At Elizabethtown College, we will individually advise students seeking their CPA license to help them complete additional credits during their four years. This can be done through internships, summer courses, AP credits and additional semester courses. We have prepared a 4-year schedule to use as a general guide for meeting the 150-hour CPA requirement.  Alternatively, additional credits can also be taken while pursuing a Master's degree.  Additional information for prospective students.

International Accounting

If you are interested in international accounting, we'd advise you to take one of these three paths:

  • Major in accounting with a modern languages minor
  • Major in accounting with an international studies minor
  • Major in International Business with a concentration in accounting

CPA Passport to Opportunity

Elizabethtown College and a local PICPA (Pennsylvania Institute of CPA’s) chapter co-host one of the “CPA - Passport to Opportunity” programs that are presented across the state. The one-day event features local CPAs and is intended to provide information to high school students about career paths in accounting. Speakers talk to the students about their unique career and school experiences, as well as their challenges in finding a suitable work-life balance. The event also provides an opportunity for high school students to ask questions of our current accounting majors, and obtain information on the college admissions process. The event attracts some 175 high school students and educators.

Accounting Job Fair

The Department of Business and Career Services invites representatives from regional and national accounting firms as well as government and industry to come to the College and provide information on job and internship opportunities in their organizations.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program

The VITA Program offers free basic tax return preparation to low- to moderate-income (generally, $49,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Elizabethtown College offers this service at the VITA site in the James B. Hoover Center for Business. The tax returns are prepared by accounting major students and are reviewed by the Director of the Accounting Program for accuracy. The number of clients is limited to about 120. Appointments are necessary and are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Appointments may be made by calling 717-361-1270.

The Director of the Accounting Program and Edgar T. Bitting Chair of Accounting is Prof. Terrie Riportella.
