About the Department

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Elizabethtown College is a community of learners—students, faculty, and staff—dedicated to furthering an understanding of chemistry and its role in the world around us. Our departmental mission is to sustain an engaging and supportive learning environment and offer relevant programs in chemistry and biochemistry that advance our undergraduate students’ pursuit of career and life goals. To this end, we offer:

Two majors—Chemistry and Biochemistry. The chemistry major is accredited by the American Chemical Society, and we offer related minors and concentrations in Forensic Chemistry, Chemistry Secondary Education, Chemistry Management, and Chemical Physics. Our chemistry and biochemistry majors serve also as advantageous Pre-Medicine, Pre-Veterinary Medicine, and Pre-Dental tracks.

A dedicated faculty, with a commitment to innovative and integrative teaching and learning, academically challenging curricula and courses, and an environment in which each student is challenged to achieve.

Research and experiential learning as the cornerstones of the discipline. Our students can begin independent research with a faculty mentor as early as their first year, and fundamental research is incorporated into our teaching laboratories and carried out with research mentors during the summer and academic year.

Up to date facilities and instrumentation in Musser Hall, which was designed specifically for teaching and research in the chemical sciences and is one wing of the larger Masters Center for Science, Mathematics, and Engineering.

A track record of success, with personal, comprehensive advising and mentoring and competitive placement of our students into graduate programs, professional programs, and directly into the work force.

We invite you to browse our website, where you will learn more about the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Elizabethtown, our students, faculty, curriculum, ongoing research initiatives, and facilities. Better yet, please consider a visit to Musser Hall! We look forward to meeting you.
