Health Professions Advising Overview:
Challenging academics at Elizabethtown College prepare students for a successful career in the health professions. The Health Professions Advising Committee (HPAC) guides students through their undergraduate curriculum to assist them in selecting the right path for their profession. The HPAC faculty guide and support undergraduates and alumni through the application process to graduate and professional programs in the health care fields.
Selecting a Major:
Elizabethtown offers both a Pre-Medicine concentration and an Allied Health Concentration for students wishing to pursue health careers, however, it is possible to concentrate in any academic discipline at the College and with careful course planning be admitted to a health professions program. We encourage our students to seek out and study those areas of interest to them.
Elizabethtown HPAC is committed to assisting any student or alumni seeking admission to a health professions program. The HPAC faculty work closely with the student to provide guidance and letters of recommendation required for the application process. During their first weeks on campus first year students are introduced to the HPAC faculty and advised of the opportunities for career and academic guidance. Programs are scheduled throughout the year for all interested students to attend and participate in presentations and discussions with health care providers, medical students and professional school admissions representatives. We have a network of local health professionals that allow students to participate in "job shadowing" opportunities.
Admission to medical schools, especially allopathic and veterinary medicine programs is very competitive. We encourage and help students find opportunities for research, internships, study abroad, community service and extra-curricular pursuits that will enhance their candidacy for these programs. HPAC faculty guide students through the application process helping them meet the important deadlines and provide them with required materials like letters of recommendation.
Elizabethtown offers students interested in advanced studies in the health professions, the option to participate in cooperative programs with affiliate graduate or professional schools. By combining specialized undergraduate studies at Elizabethtown with direct admission to graduate school, you can earn your advanced degree in less time than taking a traditional route, sometimes saving one to three years of study. More information on our cooperative programs can be found here.
