Department of Modern Languages

The study of Chinese, French, German, Japanese, or Spanish at Elizabethtown College unites practical training in the language skills -listening, speaking, reading, and writing- with an understanding of the sociology, history, and literature of the culture in which the language is used. These goals are realized through:
- A diverse curriculum with offerings in language, culture, conversation, reading, translation, literature, film, and business that fosters international and cross-cultural perspectives
- Experiences in a foreign setting where students live alongside and learn from people from diverse ethnic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds
- Mentoring from professors that prepares students to be life-long learners and productive citizens, leaders, and professionals
We join the pragmatic virtues of a usable skill with the humanistic values of a liberal arts education for a learning journey that has the power to transform our students into global citizens, humanists, thrice-born intellectuals, and productive professionals
