WIDENER TAKES TWO FROM ETOWN TO WIN MAC CHAMPIONSHIP

ANNVILLE, Pa. --- Tom Scartozzi and Dave Feight threw back-to-back complete games an Widener pounded out 25 runs on 26 hits to sweep a doubleheader from Elizabethtown, 14-4 and 11-1, and win the 1999 Middle Atlantic Conference championship on Monday.  The Pioneers (24-12), who fell into the MAC loser's bracket on Wednesday after losing their playoff opener, needed to defeat Etown twice to claim the title.

The Blue Jays fell to 27-11 on the season and were halted in their bid for a third conference championship in the '90s.  The sweep also damaged Etown's chance for a berth in the NCAA tournament.  The NCAA field will be announced on Sunday, May 16.

Joe Guarente led the Pioneer attack, going 6-for-8 on the afternoon with a home run, seven RBI and three runs scored.  Doug Kennedy went 4-for-5 with an home run, two RBI and two runs scored in the opener and added an RBI double in the nightcap.  Joe Dawkins added three hits and four RBI in Widener's game-one win.

Chris Romig went 3-for-5 with his 17th double of the season in game one for Etown while Chris Turtell and Tyler Comp (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) each added a pair of hits.  Scott Weigle drove in the Jays' lone run in game two.

In game one, Widener led 2-1 before erupting for six runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth to cruise to the win and force a deciding final game.  Scartozzi picked up his seventh win of the season, scattering 11 hits over nine innings while fanning four.

In game two, the Pioneers again scored ten runs over a two-inning stretch to break open a tight game.  A three-run blast to leftcenterfield by Guarente capped a five-run seventh inning that helped Widener open up a 6-0 lead.  In the eighth, Guarente capped another five-run outburst with a two-run double that made it 11-1 in favor of the Pioneers.

Feight held the Etown bats to five hits on the game while walking one and striking out two for his third win of the season.

ETOWN RALLIES FOR SIX RUNS IN NINTH TO DEFEAT DREW, 9-5; BLUE JAYS WILL FACE WIDENER FOR MAC CHAMPIONSHIP ON SATURDAY

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Trailing 4-3 heading into the ninth inning, Elizabethtown rallied for six runs to defeat Drew, 9-5, in their Middle Atlantic Conference playoff game on Friday and advance to Saturday's MAC championship game against Widener University.  The Pioneers defeated FDU-Madison, 10-3, and Drew, 4-1, on Friday to fight through the MAC loser's bracket.  Game time is 10 a.m. at Lebanon Valley College.

Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) went 2-for-5 including a two-run triple in the ninth to knock in the tying and go-ahead runs for Etown, which improved to 27-9.  Scott Weigle (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) scattered 11 hits over 8-2/3 innings and struck out five to improve to 7-0 on the season.

Steve MacKinnon went 2-for-5 with two runs scored to lead the Rangers, who outhit the Blue Jays 11-9 on the day but also committed seven errors.  John Foerch suffered his second loss of the season for Drew (19-17), allowing seven hits and three earned runs while fanning five over 8-1/3 innings.

Having watched the Rangers rally for two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Etown entered the ninth trailing by a run and facing the prospect of a long climb out of the MAC loser's bracket.

With one out, Brad Karli (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) lofted a fly ball to leftfield that was dropped for a two-base error.  Shawn Price (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) followed with a single to put runners on the corners and Turtell drove a triple to the gap in right-centerfield that put the Blue Jays back on top, 5-4.

With Chris LaFontaine on in relief of Foerch, Tyler Comp (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) reached on an infield error that knocked in Turtell to make it 6-4 and Weigle took second on another dropped fly ball.   Comp then scored on a wild pitch and Chris Romig (Beavertown, Pa./West Snyder) roped a double down the third base line to plate Weigle and give Etown an 8-4 cushion.

With two outs and Jared Ness (McPherson, Ks./McPherson) at the plate, Romig came around on two more wild pitches to close out the six-run rally.

The Rangers scored once in the ninth on a double by Eric Laub, but Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) came on in relief of Weigle and struck out pinch-hitter Russell Marino to end the game and send the Blue Jays to Saturday's championship tilt.

Drew took a one-run lead into the final frame thanks to a two-run rally in their half of the eighth.

With two outs, Brian Gable reached on a throwing error and John Cevallos followed with a single to put runners on the corners.  Justin Marcucci then drove a Weigle offering to the gap in left-center that chased home pinch-runner Tom Brogan and Cevallos to give the Rangers a 4-3 lead.

Laub, Gable and Cevallos added two hits apiece for Drew.  Romig went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored for the Blue Jays, who are ranked seventh in the Mid-Atlantic region and remain in the hunt for a berth in the NCAA regional tournament.

Etown will play for its third MAC championship of the '90s on Saturday.  The Blue Jays also won conference titles in 1993 and 1997 and last advanced to the NCAA tournament in 1994.

Etown and Widener split their regular-season MAC Commonwealth League doubleheader on May 1 at Elizabethtown.  The Pioneers won the opener, 4-2, before the Blue Jays captured game two, 7-4.  If Widener wins the first game on Saturday, the two teams will play again for the title at 2:30 p.m.

ETOWN OPENS MAC PLAYOFFS WITH 2-1 WIN OVER FDU-MADISON; BLUE JAYS WILL HOST DREW ON FRIDAY

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Jared Ness (McPherson, Ks./McPherson) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored and Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) pitched out of a bases-loaded, ninth-inning jam to help Elizabethtown defeat FDU-Madison, 2-1, in the first round of the Middle Atlantic Conference baseball playoffs on Wednesday.

With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 26-9 and advanced to play Drew University on Friday, May 7 at home in the winner's bracket of the double elimination tournament.  Game time is 10 a.m.  Drew downed Widener, 7-2, in the other opening-round MAC playoff game on Wednesday.

Etown's Derik Aasan (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) worked 7-1/3 strong innings, scattering six hits while striking out two to earn his sixth win of the season.  Andrew Weinberg took the hard-luck loss for FDU-Madison despite holding the MAC's best-hitting team to five hits while allowing only one earned run over eight innings.  The Devils (15-17) will face Widener in an elimination game on Friday at Lebanon Valley College.  Game time is 10 a.m.

Trailing 2-0 heading into the eighth inning, FDU-Madison cut into the Etown lead, but fell just short of a come-from-behind win.

In the eighth, Ralph Torrillo led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on Glenn Barker's ground out.  Greg Reisner drew a walk to chase Aasan from the game and Pittinger unleashed a wild pitch that scored Torrillo to cut the Blue Jay lead to 2-1.

With two outs, Reisner moved to third on another wild pitch and Matt Bernhard walked, but Etown thirdbaseman Chris Romig (Beavertown, Pa./West Snyder) made a tremendous diving stop and throw on a grounder by Keith Gaub to end the threat.

In the ninth, FDU-Madison loaded the bases with one out, but Pittinger struck out Barker and Reisner to seal the victory and notch his second save of the season.

Etown broke the ice in the third inning, when Ness led off with a double, moved to third on a ground out by Brad Karli (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and scored on Shawn Price's (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) sacrifice fly.

The Blue Jays pushed their lead to 2-0 in the seventh, when Ness knocked in Kiah Sheppard (Bridgeton, N.J./Cumberland Regional) with a two-out single.

Etown, currently ranked seventh in the Mid-Atlantic region, is seeking its third MAC championship in the '90s and its second in the last three years.  The Blue Jays won conference titles in 1993 and 1997.

With a win on Friday, Etown would advance to the MAC championship game on Saturday, May 8 at 10 a.m.  With a loss, the Blue Jays would have to play an elimination game on Friday at 2:30 p.m.  Both games would be at Lebanon Valley.

ETOWN WRAPS UP REGULAR SEASON WITH DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT AGAINST WIDENER; BLUE JAYS OPEN MAC PLAYOFFS AT HOME WEDNESDAY

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Brad Karli (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) knocked in the go-ahead run in a four-run fifth inning and Jamie Newton (Vineland, N.J./Vineland) worked 5-2/3 strong innings to earn the game-two victory as Elizabethtown split a doubleheader with Widener in MAC Commonwealth League action on Saturday.

The Pioneers clinched a bid to the MAC playoffs with a 4-2 win in the opener.  The Blue Jays answered with a 7-4 win in game two to finish the regular season at 25-9 overall and 12-2 in the league.  Etown, which won the league title for the fourth time in six years, will host the second seed from the MAC Freedom League in the first round of the conference playoffs on Wednesday, May 5.  Game time is 2:30 p.m.

Joe Adams (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Oceanside) went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Etown attack in the second game while Jared Ness and Tim Downing each scored a pair of runs.  Frank Ciakoski drove in a pair of runs in the opener for Widener (20-11, 9-5 MAC Commonwealth League) while Tom Scartozzi went the distance, allowing two runs on six hits and struck out three to earn his sixth win of the season.

In game one, the Pioneers took advantage of five Blue Jay errors to pick up the win.  Tom Kivlin reached on an error and scored on Ciakoski's sacrifice fly to stake his team to a 1-0 lead in the first inning.   Widener made it 4-0 in the sixth courtesy of three Etown errors, a hit batter and another Ciakoski sac fly.  Pete DeCamillo drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in the second Pioneer run of the inning.

Etown cut the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out, two-run double from Kiah Sheppard (Bridgeton, N.J./Cumberland Regional), but Scartozzi worked out of further trouble before closing the door in the seventh.

In the nightcap, Widener scored all four of its runs in the first inning, but the Blue Jays fought back thanks to five walks and two hit batters by losing pitcher Mark Versuk.

In the second inning, Etown loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter before Karli drew another free pass to force in Sheppard and Chris Turtell lofted a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-2.

In the fifth, Downing walked and scored on an RBI double by Scott Weigle to make it 4-3.  Chris Romig was hit by a pitch and Sheppard advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt before Ness walked to load the bases with one out.  Adams then singled to tie the game and chase Versuk and Karli greeted reliever Dave Feight with an RBI single that put the Blue Jays on top for good at 5-4.

Shawn Price's RBI grounder plated Ness to close out the fifth and Etown added an insurance run in the seventh with Ness singled home Downing with two outs.

Newton allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three over 5-2/3 innings to pick up his third win of the year and second in as many weeks.  Derik Aasan got the final four outs to record his team-best third save of the season.

ETOWN SHAKES OFF NINTH-INNING SCRANTON RALLY, DOWNS ROYALS IN TEN INNINGS, 12-11

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Brad Karli (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) singled home Tyler Comp (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) in the bottom of the tenth inning as Elizabethtown squandered a five-run, ninth-inning lead, but recovered to stop Scranton, 12-11, in non-league action on Thursday.  With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 24-8.

Karli, Tim Downing and Nolan Cassell (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) each rapped out three hits to lead Etown's 17-hit attack.  Jim Powell went 2-for-6 with a three-run triple to pace the Royal offense while Joe Borosky and Mike Szalkiewicz also collected two hits apiece for Scranton (7-22).

Trailing 11-6 with two outs in the ninth inning, the Royals rallied to tie the score on a pair of RBI singles by Borosky and Szalkiewicz sandwiched around Powell's three-run triple.

In the tenth, however, Etown answered with the gamewinner when Comp drilled a one-out, pinch-hit single, moved to second on Shawn Price's base knock and scored on a single to center from Karli.

Jared Ness (McPherson, Ks./McPherson) worked the final 3-2/3 innings for Etown to earn his first collegiate victory.

Etown wraps up the 1999 regular season on Saturday, May 1 with an MAC Commonwealth League doubleheader at home against Widener University.  Game time is 1 p.m.  The Blue Jays open the MAC playoffs at home on Wednesday, May 5 at 2:30 p.m.

PRICE, NESS POWER ETOWN TO 7-6 VICTORY OVER MARY WASHINGTON; PAUKOVITS EARNS THIRD WIN AS BLUE JAYS HANG ON

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Shawn Price (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) went 3-for-4 with a triple, home run and two RBI and Jared Ness (McPherson, Ks./McPherson) added a two-run homer to lead Elizabethtown past Mary Washington, 7-6, in non-league action on Monday.  With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 21-8.

Keith Paukovits (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) worked eight strong innings to earn his third victory of the season for Etown while Chris Romig went 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.  Nolan Cassell (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) and Tim Downing also rapped out a pair of hits in the winning effort.

Brian Sabatelli led the Mary Washington offense with three hits, including a triple, and two RBI.  Nick DiJulio and Eric Guyton also added two hits apiece as the Eagles (19-12) rallied for four runs in the ninth inning before stranding the tying run on third base.

Trailing 2-1, Etown used the long ball to climb back into the game.  With one out in the fifth inning, Price hammered a solo drive over the leftfield fence for his first collegiate home run to tie the game at 2-2.  One inning later, Ness cracked a two-run shot for his first collegiate roundtripper that plated Romig and put the Blue Jays ahead to stay at 4-2.

Etown scored twice in the seventh to make it 6-2 when Scott Weigle drove in Price with a two-out single and scored on Romig's RBI triple that chased Eagle starter Erik Dorman from the contest.  Price then capped the day with a two-out triple in the eighth that scored Cassell to give the Jays a 7-2 lead.

Etown's late-inning insurance runs proved crucial when Mary Washington pushed four runs across in the top of the ninth inning.

Tad St. Clair doubled to open the frame and Guyton singled to put runners on the corners.  Blue Jay reliever Derek Lobb walked Brad Poole to load the bases, struck out Scott Chapman and walked Ryan Kaye to force in a run before being lifted for Weigle.

Sabatelli singled home Guyton and pinch-runner Christian Buchakjian to pull the Eagles within 7-5, but Weigle recovered to strike out Mark McEathron.  DiJulio drove a single to leftfield that scored Kaye and put pinch-runner Nate Angelo on third as the tying run, but Aaron Vradenburgh grounded into a force out to end the game.

Etown returns to action on Wednesday, April 28 with an MAC Commonwealth League doubleheader at Juniata College.  Game time is 2 p.m.

Brett Gutterman pitched one-hit relief over the final 3-2/3 innings to pick up his first victory of the season and help Johns Hopkins improve to 18-10.  Brad Karli (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) drilled a double for the lone extra base knock among Etown's six hits on the afternoon.  Derik Aasan took the loss despite going the distance and allowing three runs on six hits while fanning six.

Etown jumped out to a 2-0 lead by plating its first two batters of the game.  Chris Turtell led off with a single and moved to third on Karli's two-bagger.  Scott Weigle scored Turtell on an RBI groundout and Kiah Sheppard's two-out single drove in Karli for the Jays' second and final run of the game.

Johns Hopkins answered in their half of the first when J.R. Taylor singled, moved to second on a double by John Christ and scored on a groundout off the bat of Osama Abdelwahab.

The homestanding Blue Jays evened the game at 2-2 in the third frame when Karl Sineath was hit by a pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from Christ.

Hopkins went ahead for good when Milo led off the sixth inning with his second home run of the season.  Aasan retired the final nine JHU batters, but Etown managed only one hit over the final four innings and couldn't push the tying run across.

ETOWN SWEEPS MESSIAH, 7-5 AND 1-0, TO CLAIM SHARE OF FIRST PLACE IN MAC COMMONWEALTH LEAGUE; AASAN TOSSES THREE-HIT SHUTOUT

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Derik Aasan (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) tossed a three-hit shutout and Scott Weigle (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) improved his record to 4-0 as Elizabethtown swept a doubleheader from Messiah, 7-5 and 1-0, in MAC Commonwealth League action on Saturday.  With the wins, the Blue Jays improved to 13-3 overall and claimed a share of first place in the league at 3-1.

Chris Romig's two-run single highlighted a six-run first inning that helped Etown pick up the victory in game one.  Teammate Kiah Sheppard went 3-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored in the opener while Weigle went the distance, scattering seven hits and fanning five to collect his team-best fourth win of the season.

In game two, Aasan and Messiah hurler Erik Scardino kept the offenses in check until Etown struck for the game's lone run in the fifth inning.

With one out, Buddy Touchinsky drew a walk and stole second base.  After Shawn Price flied out, Tim Downing (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) lashed a single to center that scored Touchinsky to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.

Aasan, who lowered his earned run average to an amazing 0.33 over a team-high 27-1/3 innings, retired six of the last seven batters he faced in the final two innings to close the door on his second shutout of the season.

Doug Enders singled, stole second and scored on a wild pitch to give the Falcons (4-11, 2-2 MAC Commonwealth League) a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one.

Etown, however, used four hits and three Messiah errors to score six times in its half of the first inning and chase losing pitcher Eli Walters from the game.

Tyler Comp reached on an error to start the inning and Brad Karli followed with a base hit.  After  Weigle was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Romig plated Comp and Karli with a single to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead.

Sheppard promptly singled to reload the bases and Nolan Cassell reached on an error that chased in Weigle and Romig to make it 4-0 in favor of Etown.  Another throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Touchinsky brought Sheppard home and Price gave the Blue Jays a six-run lead with an RBI single that scored Cassell.

In the second inning, Weigle doubled and scored on a base knock from Sheppard to give Etown a 7-1 advantage.

A two-out, two-run single by Seth Custer in the third inning pulled Messiah within 7-3.  Enders and Derek Price also collected an RBI for the Falcons in game one.

ETOWN SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH MORAVIAN IN MAC COMMONWEALTH LEAGUE OPENER; WEIGLE TOSSES COMPLETE GAME

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Scott Weigle (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) tossed a three-hit complete game to help Elizabethtown split a doubleheader with Moravian in MAC Commonwealth League action on Saturday.  The Blue Jays won game one, 3-1, before falling to the Greyhounds in the nightcap, 4-3.

Weigle lowered his ERA to 0.50 with his team-leading third win of the season for Etown (9-3, 1-1) and added an RBI single in the opener, the Blue Jays first home game of the 1999 campaign.  Chris Romig (Beavertown, Pa./West Snyder) and Buddy Touchinsky (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) each had an RBI sacrifice fly in the win.

In game two, Moravian's Jarrett Hughes broke a 2-2 tie with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and Shawn Brown followed with an RBI single to add a key insurance run.  Mark Slavin went the distance, allowing only two hits while fanning three to pick up his first win of the season for the Greyhounds (4-5-1, 1-1).

Hughes drove in Moravian's lone run of the first game with a double in the first inning that plated Michael Abbate to make it 1-0.

Etown answered in their half of the frame when Tim Downing (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) doubled, Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) reached on a throwing error and Weigle lashed a single to score Downing to tie the game at 1-1.

After Nolan Cassell (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) moved Weigle to second and Turtell to third with a sacrifice bunt, Romig lofted a fly ball to center that plated Turtell and gave the Blue Jays a 2-1 edge.

Etown posted an insurance run in the sixth inning when Romig led off with his team-leading seventh double of the season and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kiah Sheppard.  Touchinsky's foul out down the left field line was deep enough to score Romig and give Etown a 3-1 lead.

Both teams combined for only 15 hits over 14 innings on the afternoon.  Hughes went 3-for-6 for the Greyhounds.

The Blue Jays return to action on Tuesday, March 23 at home against Marywood College.  Game time is 3 p.m.
