BOYERTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown's season came to an end Saturday at the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament at Bear Stadium in Boyertown, PA, as the Blue Jays lost 3-2 to Gwynedd-Mercy.

The Blue Jays (19-19) were held to just three hits for the day by Gwynedd-Mercy pitcher Steve Troy (Philadelphia, PA/North Catholic), who threw a complete game while striking out four.

Elizabethtown scored both of its runs in the bottom of the first inning. Tyler Comp (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) singled to follow, and Comp scored and Bonner advanced to second on a throwing error by Gwynedd-Mercy right fielder James Martin (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic). A single by Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) drove in Bonner.

ETOWN DEFEATS WESTERN NEW ENGLAND, 11-4, TO STAY ALIVE IN NCAA MID-ATLANTIC REGIONAL

BOYERTOWN, Pa. --- Sixth-seeded Elizabethtown stayed alive in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament by defeating fifth-seeded Western New England, 11-4, at Bear Stadium in Boyertown, PA. With the win, Elizabethtown improves to 19-18 overall and eliminates Western New England, which finishes the season with a 21-15 record and a 0-2 mark in the double elimination tournament. Elizabethtown will play again at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 19, against an opponent to be determined.

Western New England starting pitcher Nick Ziminsky (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) never made it out of the top of the first inning, as the Blue Jays erupted for seven runs in the opening frame. Tyler Comp (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) led off the game with a single and was driven in on a two-run homer by Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst). Jared Ness (York, PA/McPherson, KS) followed Turtell's blast with a single. Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) walked and Brad Biehl (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg) was hit by an errant pitch to load the bases with one out. Mark Dixon (Havertown, PA/Delaware County Christian) followed with a two-RBI single, and Kenny Glass (Pittsburgh, PA/North Hills) walked immediately afterward to load the bases once again. Shawn Price (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) then hit a two-RBI single. In his second time up in the first inning, Comp grounded out but drove in Glass for the seventh run of the inning.

Western New England scored a run in the bottom of the first when Jason Engelhart (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro Central) drove in Jon Whelpley (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk) with a double.

Etown added another run in the top of the second, when Turtell led off with a double and was driven in on a single by Duppstadt.

Western New England made the score 8-3 in the bottom of the third when Engelhart doubled home Derek Higgins (Waltham, MA/Waltham), and a sacrifice fly by Joe Farina (Waterbury, CT/Holy Cross) drove in Engelhart.

Etown extended its lead to 9-3 in the top of the fourth when Biehl hit a double to drive in Ness, who reached base on a single.

The Blue Jays pulled ahead 11-3 in the top of the sixth Duppstadt hit a two-run home run, scoring Turtell.

Zach Holt (Northampton, MA/Northampton) scored Western New England's final run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Duppstadt led the Blue Jays with three RBI, and he batted three for four with a home run. Turtell scored a team-high three runs, and went two for five with a home run and two RBI.

ETOWN FALLS TO MONTCLAIR STATE, 9-3, IN NCAA REGIONAL OPENER

BOYERTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown fell in the opening game of the 2001 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament, 9-3, to Montclair State, Thursday at Bear Stadium in Boyertown, Pa. With the loss, the Blue Jays (18-18), will face the loser of Thursday's Johns Hopkins-Western New England game at 11:00 a.m. Friday. The winner of Friday's game will continue to play on Saturday, while the loser of that game will be eliminated.

Elizabethtown jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Tyler Comp (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) was driven in by Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst). Comp reached base on an error to lead off the inning, and he moved to third when Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) singled.

Montclair State (32-9) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning when Scott Allan (Milford, NJ/Immaculata) doubled home Brian Ellerson (Bayonne, NJ/Hudson Catholic), who singled and stole second to move into scoring position.

The Red Hawks added two more runs in the bottom of the third when Dave Wurst (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) singled and was driven home on a triple by Craig Conway (Mountainside, NJ/Gov. Livingston), who also scored on the play due to an Elizabethtown throwing error.

Elizabethtown struck back to tie the score in the top of the sixth inning, as Comp drove in Shawn Price (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) on a double. A throwing error by Montclair sent Comp to third, and a sacrifice fly by Turtell subsequently drove him in.

The Blue Jays missed an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the seventh. Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) doubled to lead off the inning and chase Montclair starting pitcher Jeff Gogal (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) from the game. A single by Mark Dixon (Havertown, PA/Delaware County Christian) sent Duppstadt to third with one out, and Kenny Glass (Pittsburgh, PA/North Hills) followed with a walk to load the bases. However, the Blue Jays grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Montclair State pulled ahead to stay in the bottom of the seventh inning as Wurst hit a two-run homer. Chris Baran (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) followed with another home run on the next pitch to remove Etown starter Jamie Newton (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) from the game. Eric Lau (Dillsburg, PA/Northern) took over on the mound for Etown and held the Red Hawks scoreless for the rest of the inning.

The Red Hawks added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Wurst hit a two-RBI triple and scored on a single by Baran.

Montclair State reliever Kevin Rakowski (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills) got the win, and Jason Arre (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South) was credited with a save since he entered the game when the Red Hawks had a three run lead. Starter Gogal fanned nine Blue Jays in six innings pitched.

ETOWN SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH MESSIAH, WINS FIRST GAME 4-2, FALLS IN SECOND 1-0

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown split a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader with Messiah Saturday, winning the first game 4-2 and falling in a 1-0 pitchers' duel in the second game. With the split, Etown is now 12-16 overall and 6-6 in the conference, while Messiah is 6-4 in the conference and 12-12 overall.

Etown pitcher Jamie Newton (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) pitched four scoreless innings of relief, allowing only three hits and striking out one en route to getting the win in the first game. Elizabethtown jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) went two for three with two RBI for the Blue Jays, and Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) batted two for three as well as stealing a base.

In the second game, Messiah won 1-0 despite a valiant effort on the mound by Etown pitcher Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, MD/South Carroll). Pittinger, who is usually the Blue Jays' closer, made his first start in two years and pitched a complete game, allowing only one run and two hits in seven innings and whiffing 12 Messiah batters while walking just two. Pittinger threw only 19 balls the entire game against 68 strikes.

He got little offensive support, as the Blue Jays were held to only two hits as well. Both of Etown's hits came from the bat of Jared Ness (York, PA/McPherson, KS), who hit a double and a triple but was stranded both times.

ETOWN SWEEPS ALBRIGHT IN CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER ON THREE HITS

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Saturday must have been the Blue Jays' lucky day. While a pair of 2-1 Commonwealth Conference victories over Albright may not have been any more noteworthy than usual, the fact that Elizabethtown managed to win both games while totaling just three hits for the day was. Elizabethtown was held to only two hits in the first game and was held to a one-hitter in the second, and still managed to win both games.

Albright's first unlucky hurler of the day was Ryan Gallatig (Philadelphia, PA/Cardinal Dougherty), who pitched a complete game and gave up only two hits and two unearned runs over six innings.

Elizabethtown scored both of its runs in the fifth inning as Mark Dixon (Havertown, PA/Delaware Co. Christian) led off with a single and stole second. Steve Phillips (Hockessin, DE/Tower Hill School) followed by getting hit by the pitcher.

After a fly-out, Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) reached base on an error and loaded the bases. Shawn Price (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) reached base on another error, which drove in Dixon. Tyler Comp (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) was hit by another pitch immediately afterward, driving in Phillips.

Eric Lau (Dillsburg, PA/Northern) started the first game for Etown and allowed one unearned run and eight hits in 5-2/3 innings pitched for the win. Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, MD/South Carroll) pitched the final 1-1/3 innings for the save.

In the second game, Albright pitcher John McGillian (Upper Darby, PA/Upper Darby) had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning. By that point, however, the Blue Jays already had a 1-0 lead thanks to Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman), who walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth, advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches, and was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Price.

Etown took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth, as Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) led off by reaching base on an error. With two out in the inning, Duppstadt drove in Turtell on a single — Etown's only hit of the game.
Jamie Newton (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) started the second game for Elizabethtown and went 5-1/3 innings, allowing six hits and no runs for the win. Pittinger finished the game, striking out three in 1-2/3 innings to get the save.

Etown improves to 11-11 overall and 5-3 in the conference with the wins. The Blue Jays return to action Tuesday, April 10 on the road against York for a 3:30 p.m. game.

The College of New Jersey jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back, extending its lead to 5-1 by the end of the fifth. Elizabethtown had its best chance to take control of the game in the bottom of the sixth, when the Blue Jays scored one run and stranded three runners.

Etown relief pitchers Jamie Newton (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) and Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, MD/South Carroll) allowed no New Jersey batters to reach base in the final two innings.
