ETOWN DEFEATS GWYNEDD-MERCY, 7-1

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. --- With a 7-1 non-conference road win over Gwynedd-Mercy Tuesday, Elizabethtown improved to 9-7 overall.

Etown pitcher Ryan Bowe held Gwynedd-Mercy to four hits over eight innings and struck out six en route to getting the win.

Four Blue Jays had two or more hits in the game as Etown pounded out 13 hits. Kevin Bonner went three for five with a double, one run scored and one RBI. Also hitting doubles for Etown were Mark Dixon and Shawn Price. Jared Ness led Etown with two runs scored.

Elizabethtown returns to action on the road for a doubleheader against Commonwealth Conference rival Lebanon Valley Saturday, March 31. Game time is 1:00 p.m.

ETOWN SWEEPS MORAVIAN, 6-5 AND 5-4

BALTIMORE, Md. --- Elizabethtown improved to 8-7 overall and 3-1 in the Commonwealth Conference with a twinbill sweep of Moravian Saturday. Etown won the first game 6-5 and took the second, 5-4.

Moravian vaulted out to a 5-0 lead by the top of the second inning. The Blue Jays began to chip away at that lead in the bottom of the second, scoring two. By the middle of the seventh and final inning, the score was still 5-2, and then the Blue Jays exploded for four runs as Mark Dixon (Havertown, PA/Delaware County Christian) singled to lead off the inning, and Shawn Price (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) reached base via an error.

Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) then grounded out but drove home Dixon to make the score 5-3 with one out. The next batter struck out. Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) and Jared Ness (York, PA/McPherson, KS) drew walks immediately afterward to load the bases. Kenny Glass (Pittsburgh, PA/North Hills) then walked to drive in Price. Steve Phillips (Hockessin, DE/Tower Hill School) drew Etown's fourth consecutive walk to send home Turtell and tie the game. Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) followed with a single to drive in Ness and win the game.

In the second game, Etown took a 3-0 lead in the second inning and never looked back. The Blue Jays were led at the plate by Ness, who hit two for four with an RBI, and Price, who hit two for three with an RBI.

Etown returns to action on the road Tuesday, March 27 to face Gwynedd-Mercy for a 3:00 p.m. game.

ETOWN FALLS TO JOHNS HOPKINS, 7-1

BALTIMORE, Md. --- Elizabethtown fell to 6-7 overall this season with a 7-1 road loss to Johns Hopkins Friday. With the win, Centennial Conference power Hopkins improves to 11-4 in 2001.

Hopkins scored its runs in the first, third, and fifth innings. Etown pitcher Mark Dixon (Havertown, PA/Delaware County Christian) got the loss. Luke Rezeli got the win for Johns Hopkins.

Elizabethtown returns to action at home Saturday, March 24 as host of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader against Moravian. Game time is 1:00 p.m.

ETOWN FALLS TO F & M, 3-0

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- Elizabethtown fell to 6-6 overall this season with a 3-0 home loss to Lancaster County rival Franklin and Marshall Tuesday. With the win, the Diplomats improve to 8-6 this season.

Etown lost despite out-hitting F & M 8-7 and despite a strong performance on the mound by starter Ryan Bowe (Quarryville, PA/Solanco). Bowe lasted into the eighth inning and gave up only two earned runs and six hits en route to getting the loss. F & M starter John Walsh (Havertown, PA/Haverford) got the win and gave up eight hits in 6-2/3 innings of work.

Etown first baseman Kenny Glass (Pittsburgh, PA/North Hills) led all batters with three hits in the game. Franklin and Marshall second baseman Chris Zoeller (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Hills) scored a pair of runs for the Diplomats and drove in another.

Elizabethtown returns to action Friday, March 23 for a road game against Johns Hopkins. Game time is 1:00 p.m.

ETOWN SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH SUSQUEHANNA TO OPEN COMMONWEALTH CONFERENCE SEASON

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- In a make-up of Saturday's washed-out games, Elizabethtown split a road doubleheader with Susquehanna to begin its Commonwealth Conference season. Etown won the first game 5-3, and Susquehanna took the second 5-1. The Blue Jays are now 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while Susquehanna stands at 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the Commonwealth.

Eric Lau (Dillsburg, PA/Northern) pitched six innings of the first game for Etown and gave up six hits and three runs to improve to 4-0 this season. Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, MD/South Carroll) mopped up in the seventh inning, striking out two for his third save of the season.

At the plate in the first game, the Blue Jays' Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) batted one for four with a double and drove in a run. Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) scored two runs, and Tyler Comp (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) hit two for four.

The Blue Jays were held to only five hits in the second game by Lee Rodgers, who went the distance to pick up his first win of the season for Susquehanna. Bonner scored Etown's only run and was driven in by Turtell.

Elizabethtown returns to action Tuesday, March 20 at home against Franklin and Marshall. Game time is 3:00 p.m.

ETOWN FALLS TO D-II WEST CHESTER,
13-12, IN HOME OPENER

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown fell to 5-4 in 2001 with a 13-12 loss in its home opener to Division II West Chester Wednesday. West Chester improves to 8-7 with the win.

Etown took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third only to see West Chester go ahead 5-3 by the top of the sixth. The Blue Jays regained a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth, but it slipped away the next inning as West Chester went ahead 8-7. The Golden Rams went ahead to stay with four more runs in the top of eighth to break an 8-8 tie.

Jared Ness (York, PA./McPherson, KS) hit three for five for the Blue Jays with two runs driven in. Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) hit three for six with two runs scored and two RBIs as well for Etown.

The Blue Jays return to action on the road for a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at Susquehanna Saturday, March 17. Game time is 1:00 p.m.

ETOWN CONCLUDES FLORIDA TRIP WITH
5-3 MARK

FT. PIERCE, Fla. --- Elizabethtown closed out its spring break trip to Ft. Pierce, Fla. with a 5-3 overall record.

Elizabethtown lost a pair of games Wednesday, March 7, falling to Norwich 9-6 and Concordia 10-4. Kevin Bonner batted three for four against Norwich. Chris Turtell hit one for three with a triple and Brad Duppstadt had a pair of RBIs for Etown against Concordia.

On Thursday, March 8, Elizabethtown blasted Pitt-Greensburg 13-6, as the Blue Jays pounded out 17 hits. Jamie Newton got the win for Etown.

The Blue Jays won a pair of games on Friday, March 9, defeating Penn State-Altoona 10-7 and Penn State-Behrend 3-2. Bryan Pittinger picked up the win in relief against Altoona. Shawn Price had four hits and Steve Phillips had three against Altoona. Eric Lau got the win on the mound against Behrend and Pittinger got the save. Etown won despite being out-hit by Behrend 9-2.

Etown returns to action for its home opener Wednesday, March 14 against West Chester. Game time is 3:00 p.m.

ETOWN BASEBALL RESULTS FROM MONDAY AND TUESDAY

FT. PIERCE, Fla. --- Elizabethtown now has a 2-1 record following a 14-6 loss to Wilmington Monday and a 12-3 win over Eastern Tuesday in Ft. Pierce, Fla.

Eric Lau got the win against Eastern, he is now 2-0 this season. Ryan Bowe received the loss against Wilmington.

ETOWN WINS SEASON OPENER, 11-8, OVER PSU-BEHREND IN FLA.

FT. PIERCE, Fla. --- Elizabethtown won its season opener with an 11-8 victory over Penn State Behrend in Fort Pierce, FL Sunday.

Eric Lau picked up the win in relief for the Blue Jays, and closer Bryan Pittinger earned his first save of the season.

On the offensive end, Tyler Comp batted three-for-four and scored three runs for the Blue Jays. Jared Ness hit three-for-three and drove in three runs, and Mike Gifford batted two-for-two and drove in a pair of runs.
