ETOWN CLINCHES CONFERENCE PLAYOFF BERTH WITH SWEEP OF WIDENER

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- For the second consecutive year, Elizabethtown clinched a conference playoff berth by sweeping Widener on the last day of regular season conference play. The wins did not come as easily this season as last, as both games went into extra innings. Etown won the first game 4-3 in 11 innings, and the Blue Jays took the second, 7-6, in nine innings. With the wins, Etown improves to 15-16 overall and 8-6 in the Commonwealth Conference, while Widener drops to 6-8 in the conference and 19-12 overall.

In the first game, Widener jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Etown scored its first run in the fourth inning and tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. The Blue Jays scored the winning run on a passed ball in the bottom of the eleventh inning.

Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, MD/South Carroll) pitched the final five innings in relief for the Blue Jays, allowing just three hits and no runs en route to getting the win. Etown starter Jamie Newton (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) allowed one earned run in six innings. Jared Ness (York, PA/McPherson, KS) went two for four with two runs scored for the Blue Jays, and Steve Phillips (Hockessin, DE/Tower Hill School) went two for two with a pair of RBIs.

Widener took a 4-1 lead in the top of the third inning in the second game. Etown cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the third, and Widener preseved its tenuous lead, taking a 7-6 advantage into the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs and no one on base in the bottom of the seventh, Ness hit a solo home run, the first Etown homer at Herr Field this season, to tie the game and send it into extra innings. Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) drove in Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) for the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Elizabethtown will play Ursinus in a non-conference game on the road Tuesday, May 1 at 3:30 p.m. The Blue Jays will travel to Juniata Wednesday, May 2 at 2:30 p.m. for a first-round conference playoff game.

ETOWN POUNDS DELAWARE VALLEY, 16-10

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown won a 16-10 non-conference slugfest at Delaware Valley Wednesday to improve to 13-16 overall this season. Delaware Valley drops to 16-9 with the loss.

It was a great day for Etown catcher Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) who belted a pair of home runs and drove in seven runs. Turtell was not the only Blue Jay who went deep Wednesday, as Kenny Glass (Pittsburgh, PA/North Hills) also sent the ball sailing out of the park. Glass tallied four RBI for the game. Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) had three hits and one double, scored three runs, and drove in two more for the Blue Jays.

Ryan Bowe (Quarryville, PA/Solanco) pitched three innings in relief, allowed no runs, and got his second win of the season for the Blue Jays.

Elizabethtown returns to action at home Saturday for its final Commonwealth Conference doubleheader of the regular season. The Blue Jays will play Widener at 1:00 p.m., and will need to win at least one of the games in order to make the conference playoffs next week.

ETOWN SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH MESSIAH, WINS FIRST GAME 4-2, FALLS IN SECOND 1-0

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown split a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader with Messiah Saturday, winning the first game 4-2 and falling in a 1-0 pitchers' duel in the second game. With the split, Etown is now 12-16 overall and 6-6 in the conference, while Messiah is 6-4 in the conference and 12-12 overall.

Etown pitcher Jamie Newton (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) pitched four scoreless innings of relief, allowing only three hits and striking out one en route to getting the win in the first game. Elizabethtown jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) went two for three with two RBI for the Blue Jays, and Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) batted two for three as well as stealing a base.

In the second game, Messiah won 1-0 despite a valiant effort on the mound by Etown pitcher Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, MD/South Carroll). Pittinger, who is usually the Blue Jays' closer, made his first start in two years and pitched a complete game, allowing only one run and two hits in seven innings and whiffing 12 Messiah batters while walking just two. Pittinger threw only 19 balls the entire game against 68 strikes.

He got little offensive support, as the Blue Jays were held to only two hits as well. Both of Etown's hits came from the bat of Jared Ness (York, PA/McPherson, KS), who hit a double and a triple but was stranded both times.

Etown returns to action on the road Wednesday, April 25, 2001 against Delaware Valley. Game time is 3:30 p.m.

ETOWN SWEEPS ALBRIGHT IN CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER ON THREE HITS

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Saturday must have been the Blue Jays' lucky day. While a pair of 2-1 Commonwealth Conference victories over Albright may not have been any more noteworthy than usual, the fact that Elizabethtown managed to win both games while totaling just three hits for the day was. Elizabethtown was held to only two hits in the first game and was held to a one-hitter in the second, and still managed to win both games.

Albright's first unlucky hurler of the day was Ryan Gallatig (Philadelphia, PA/Cardinal Dougherty), who pitched a complete game and gave up only two hits and two unearned runs over six innings.

Elizabethtown scored both of its runs in the fifth inning as Mark Dixon (Havertown, PA/Delaware Co. Christian) led off with a single and stole second. Steve Phillips (Hockessin, DE/Tower Hill School) followed by getting hit by the pitcher.

After a fly-out, Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) reached base on an error and loaded the bases. Shawn Price (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) reached base on another error, which drove in Dixon. Tyler Comp (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) was hit by another pitch immediately afterward, driving in Phillips.

Eric Lau (Dillsburg, PA/Northern) started the first game for Etown and allowed one unearned run and eight hits in 5-2/3 innings pitched for the win. Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, MD/South Carroll) pitched the final 1-1/3 innings for the save.

In the second game, Albright pitcher John McGillian (Upper Darby, PA/Upper Darby) had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning. By that point, however, the Blue Jays already had a 1-0 lead thanks to Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman), who walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth, advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches, and was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Price.

Etown took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth, as Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) led off by reaching base on an error. With two out in the inning, Duppstadt drove in Turtell on a single — Etown's only hit of the game.
Jamie Newton (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) started the second game for Elizabethtown and went 5-1/3 innings, allowing six hits and no runs for the win. Pittinger finished the game, striking out three in 1-2/3 innings to get the save.

Etown improves to 11-11 overall and 5-3 in the conference with the wins. The Blue Jays return to action Tuesday, April 10 on the road against York for a 3:30 p.m. game.

COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY DEFEATS ETOWN, 6-2

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- College of New Jersey head coach Rick Dell got the 500th victory of his 20 year career as Elizabethtown lost 6-2 at home to the Lions Wednesday. The loss was Etown's fourth in a row and drops the Blue Jays' record to 9-11, while New Jersey improves to 8-4-1 overall.

The College of New Jersey jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back, extending its lead to 5-1 by the end of the fifth. Elizabethtown had its best chance to take control of the game in the bottom of the sixth, when the Blue Jays scored one run and stranded three runners.

Jared Ness (York, PA/McPherson, KS) led Elizabethtown at the plate by going two for four. Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) and Mark Dixon (Havertown, PA/Delaware County Christian) each scored for the Blue Jays.

The College of New Jersey's relief pitching dominated the second half of the game, as Justin Kiser struck out six in 2-1/3 innings pitched and Nick Maddalena struck out seven in the game's final three innings. Etown relief pitchers Jamie Newton (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) and Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, MD/South Carroll) allowed no New Jersey batters to reach base in the final two innings.

Etown returns to action in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at home against Albright Saturday, April 7. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
