5/19/2001 ETOWN BOWS OUT OF NCAA TOURAMENT WITH 3-2 LOSS TO GWYNEDD-MERCY

BOYERTOWN,
Pa. --- Elizabethtown's season came to an end Saturday at the NCAA
Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament at Bear Stadium in
Boyertown, PA, as the Blue Jays lost 3-2 to Gwynedd-Mercy.
The Blue Jays (19-19) were held to just three hits for the day by
Gwynedd-Mercy pitcher Steve Troy (Philadelphia, PA/North Catholic), who
threw a complete game while striking out four.
Elizabethtown scored both of its runs in the bottom of the first
inning. Tyler Comp (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) was hit by a pitch to
lead off the inning. Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) singled to
follow, and Comp scored and Bonner advanced to second on a throwing
error by Gwynedd-Mercy right fielder James Martin (Philadelphia,
PA/Roman Catholic). A single by Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg,
PA/Cumberland Valley) drove in Bonner.
Gwynedd-Mercy (32-15) scored a pair of runs in the top of the third
inning to tie the game, and took the lead in the top of the fifth when
Mike DeLuca (Philadelphia, PA/St. John Neumann) doubled and was driven
in on a single by Ed Solvibile (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic).
Etown starting pitcher Ryan Bowe (Quarryville, PA/Solanco) had a strong
outing, spreading eight hits over eight innings, striking out five and
walking only one. Bryan Pittinger (Wesminster, MD/South Carroll) struck
out two Gwynedd-Mercy batters when he took over in the top of the ninth
inning.

5/18/2001 ETOWN DEFEATS WESTERN NEW ENGLAND, 11-4, TO STAY ALIVE IN NCAA MID-ATLANTIC

Pa. --- Sixth-seeded Elizabethtown stayed alive in the NCAA
Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament by defeating fifth-seeded Western New
England, 11-4, at Bear Stadium in Boyertown, PA. With the win,
Elizabethtown improves to 19-18 overall and eliminates Western New
England, which finishes the season with a 21-15 record and a 0-2 mark
in the double elimination tournament. Elizabethtown will play again at
3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 19, against an opponent to be determined.
Western New England starting pitcher Nick Ziminsky (Chelmsford,
MA/Chelmsford) never made it out of the top of the first inning, as the
Blue Jays erupted for seven runs in the opening frame. Tyler Comp
(Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) led off the game with a single and was
driven in on a two-run homer by Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst,
NY/Lindenhurst). Jared Ness (York, PA/McPherson, KS) followed Turtell's
blast with a single. Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland
Valley) walked and Brad Biehl (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg) was hit by an
errant pitch to load the bases with one out. Mark Dixon (Havertown,
PA/Delaware County Christian) followed with a two-RBI single, and Kenny
Glass (Pittsburgh, PA/North Hills) walked immediately afterward to load
the bases once again. Shawn Price (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) then hit a
two-RBI single. In his second time up in the first inning, Comp
grounded out but drove in Glass for the seventh run of the inning.
Western New England scored a run in the bottom of the first when Jason
Engelhart (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro Central) drove in Jon Whelpley
(Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk) with a double.
Etown added another run in the top of the second, when Turtell led off
with a double and was driven in on a single by Duppstadt.
Western New England made the score 8-3 in the bottom of the third when
Engelhart doubled home Derek Higgins (Waltham, MA/Waltham), and a
sacrifice fly by Joe Farina (Waterbury, CT/Holy Cross) drove in
Engelhart.
Etown extended its lead to 9-3 in the top of the fourth when Biehl hit
a double to drive in Ness, who reached base on a single.
The Blue Jays pulled ahead 11-3 in the top of the sixth Duppstadt hit a two-run home run, scoring Turtell.
Zach Holt (Northampton, MA/Northampton) scored Western New England's final run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Duppstadt led the Blue Jays with three RBI, and he batted three for
four with a home run. Turtell scored a team-high three runs, and went
two for five with a home run and two RBI.
Etown starting pitcher Eric Lau (Dillsburg, PA/Northern) pitched six
innings to improve to 9-2 this season. Western Maryland's Engelhart hit
four for four in the game with two RBI and one run scored.

5/17/2001 ETOWN FALLS TO MONTCLAIR STATE, 9-3, IN NCAA REGIONAL OPENER

Pa. --- Elizabethtown fell in the opening game of the 2001 NCAA
Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament, 9-3, to Montclair State, Thursday at
Bear Stadium in Boyertown, Pa. With the loss, the Blue Jays (18-18),
will face the loser of Thursday's Johns Hopkins-Western New England
game at 11:00 a.m. Friday. The winner of Friday's game will continue to
play on Saturday, while the loser of that game will be eliminated.
Elizabethtown jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Tyler
Comp (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) was driven in by Chris Turtell
(Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst). Comp reached base on an error to lead
off the inning, and he moved to third when Kevin Bonner (Pitman,
NJ/Pitman) singled.
Montclair State (32-9) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning
when Scott Allan (Milford, NJ/Immaculata) doubled home Brian Ellerson
(Bayonne, NJ/Hudson Catholic), who singled and stole second to move
into scoring position.
The Red Hawks added two more runs in the bottom of the third when Dave
Wurst (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) singled and was driven home on a triple
by Craig Conway (Mountainside, NJ/Gov. Livingston), who also scored on
the play due to an Elizabethtown throwing error.
Elizabethtown struck back to tie the score in the top of the sixth
inning, as Comp drove in Shawn Price (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) on a
double. A throwing error by Montclair sent Comp to third, and a
sacrifice fly by Turtell subsequently drove him in.
The Blue Jays missed an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the
seventh. Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) doubled
to lead off the inning and chase Montclair starting pitcher Jeff Gogal
(Kearny, NJ/Kearny) from the game. A single by Mark Dixon (Havertown,
PA/Delaware County Christian) sent Duppstadt to third with one out, and
Kenny Glass (Pittsburgh, PA/North Hills) followed with a walk to load
the bases. However, the Blue Jays grounded into a double play to end
the inning.
Montclair State pulled ahead to stay in the bottom of the seventh
inning as Wurst hit a two-run homer. Chris Baran (Cranford,
NJ/Cranford) followed with another home run on the next pitch to remove
Etown starter Jamie Newton (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) from the game. Eric
Lau (Dillsburg, PA/Northern) took over on the mound for Etown and held
the Red Hawks scoreless for the rest of the inning.
The Red Hawks added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the
eighth inning, as Wurst hit a two-RBI triple and scored on a single by
Baran.
Montclair State reliever Kevin Rakowski (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills) got
the win, and Jason Arre (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South) was credited
with a save since he entered the game when the Red Hawks had a three
run lead. Starter Gogal fanned nine Blue Jays in six innings pitched.

5/5/2001 ETOWN CAPTURES SECOND CONSECUTIVE COMMONWEALTH CONFERENCE CROWN AND NCAA TO

LAWN, Pa. --- For the second consecutive year, Elizabethtown was
crowned the champion of the Commonwealth Conference in baseball and
clinched an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Blue Jays, seeded
third in the Commonwealth tournament, won the conference title with a
6-4 win over fourth-seeded Messiah Saturday at Owls Field in West Lawn,
PA. This is the first time since 1993-94 that Elizabethtown will play
in the NCAA tournament in back-to-back years.
Messiah
(15-19) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but the lead
was short-lived as Etown (18-17) responded by scoring three in the
bottom of the third. Shawn Price (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) led off the
bottom of the third with a single and was driven to third on a double
by Tyler Comp (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro). Kevin Bonner (Pitman,
NJ/Pitman) walked to load the bases with no one out, and Chris Turtell
(Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) followed with a two-RBI single. A
sacrifice fly by Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley)
scored Bonner.
Messiah tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning, but
Elizabethtown responded with three more in the bottom of the sixth. A
sacrifice fly by Bonner scored Kenny Glass (Pittsburgh, PA/North
Hills), who singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Turtell's
second single of the day drove in both Price, who singled, and Comp,
who was hit by a pitch. In all Blue Jay batters got hit by pitches five
times in the game, including Jared Ness (York, PA/McPherson, KS) who
was hit twice Saturday as well as twice in Friday's game against
Messiah. Messiah added one more run in the top of the seventh inning,
but could score no more.
Ryan Bowe (Solanco, PA/Quarryville) started on the mound for Etown and
allowed three runs in five innings while striking out three. Eric Lau
(Dillsburg, PA/Northern) took over in the sixth inning and got the win
in relief, going 1-2/3 innings and striking out two while allowing one
run. Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, MD/South Carroll) got his sixth save
of the season by closing out the final 2-1/3 innings, striking out two
and allowing no runs.
The NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional will begin May 16.

5/4/2001 ETOWN DEFEATS MESSIAH, 3-2; BLUE JAYS ONE WIN AWAY FROM NCAA TOURNAMENT BER

LAWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown defeated Messiah, 3-2, in the Blue Jays'
second game of the Commonwealth Conference Tournament at Owls Field in
Ted Palka Park in West Lawn, PA, Friday. With the win, Elizabethtown
emerges from Friday's competition as the only team undefeated in the
tournament and just one win away from a second consecutive automatic
bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Elizabethtown defeated
Juniata, 9-0, in the first game of the double-elimination conference
tournament Wednesday. Etown is now 17-17 overall, while Messiah falls
to 15-18.
Messiah took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first
inning, but Etown pulled ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning as
Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) and Shawn Price (Bethlehem,
PA/Liberty) scored for the Blue Jays. Messiah tied the game 2-2 in the
top of the seventh inning, but Tyler Comp (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro)
scored for the Blue Jays in the bottom of the seventh inning to put
Etown ahead to stay. Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, MD/South Carroll)
relieved Etown starter Jamie Newton (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) over the
final 2-1/3 innings to get the win.
Elizabethtown will play for the Commonwealth championship and the
automatic NCAA bid beginning at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, May 5 at Owls
Field in West Lawn, PA. The Blue Jays will face the winner of tonight's
Messiah-Juniata game, which is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
Earlier today, Juniata shocked Lebanon Valley with a 7-2 victory,
eliminating the Flying Dutchmen, which had coasted through the regular
season with a 12-2 first place finish in the conference, from the
Commonwealth tournament. Lebanon Valley was upset by Messiah, 1-0, on
Wednesday in the first round of the tournament.

5/2/2001 ETOWN BLOWS OUT JUNIATA, 9-0, TO OPEN COMMONWEALTH PLAYOFFS

Pa. --- After losing to Juniata twice over the course of the regular
season, Elizabethown picked the perfect time for paybacks. The Blue
Jays stomped Juniata, 9-0, in the opening round of the
double-elimination Commonwealth Conference playoffs at Juniata
Wednesday. Etown improves to 16-17 overall with the win, while Juniata
falls to 17-17-1.
The game was scoreless for the first four
innings, but Elizabethtown's offense ignited for three runs in the top
of the fifth. The Blue Jays added another run in the top of the seventh
inning, and scored five more in the top of the eighth.
Etown pitcher Eric Lau (Dillsburg, PA/Northern) started and spread six
hits over 6-1/3 innings while striking out four. Jamie Newton
(Vineland, NJ/Vineland) took over in the seventh and pitched through
the eighth inning, allowing no baserunners. Bryan Pittinger
(Westminster, MD/South Carroll) finished out the game on the mound for
Etown, striking out one in the ninth.
Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) and Mark Dixon
(Havertown, PA/Delaware County Christian) led Etown at the plate by
each going three for four. Dixon scored three runs and drove in two,
and Duppstadt scored two and drove in one.
Etown will return to action Friday, May 4 at Owls Field in West Lawn,
PA, where the Blue Jays will take on Messiah, which defeated Lebanon
Valley 1-0 today in the other first round game, at 3:00 p.m. in the
Commonwealth Conference tournament.
Admission
prices for Friday and Saturday's Commonwealth Conference championship
tournament is as follows: single day admission is $4.00 for adults,
$3.00 for senior citizens, $2.00 for students, and free for children
under six years of age. Admission for both days is $6.00 for adults,
$5.00 for senior citizens, $3.00 for students, and free for children
under six.

5/1/2001 ETOWN FALLS TO URSINUS, 5-4 IN 10 INNINGS, IN LAST REGULAR SEASON GAME

COLLEGEVILLE,
Pa. --- Elizabethtown closed out the 2001 regular season with a 15-17
overall record as Ursinus came from behind to defeat the Blue Jays,
5-4, in 10 innings at Collegeville. It was the Blue Jays' third
consecutive extra-inning game.
Ryan Bowe
started on the mound for Etown and went six innings, allowing only one
run and three hits. Jared Ness led Etow on the offensive end, going two
for four with a home run, a walk, one run scored and three RBI. Ness
has now homered two games in a row.
Etown
returns to action on the road Wednesday, May 2 against Juniata, for the
opener of the double-elimination Commonwealth Conference playoffs. The
nine inning game begins at 2:30 p.m.
