The Blue Jays were eliminated from the Commonwealth Conference playoffs Friday night with a 13-3 loss to Messiah at Owls Field in West Lawn, Pa. Etown staved off elimination earlier in the day by defeating Widener 9-1. Ryan Bowe (Quarryville, PA/Solanco) spread out seven hits in a nine-inning complete game in the Blue Jays victory over second-seeded Widener in the first game of the day, knocking the Pioneers out of the playoffs. He struck out seven batters and walked two while improving to 8-2 in 2002. Steve Luongo (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) led the Blue Jays at the plate by going 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored. Back to top 5/1/2002 Lebanon Valley Pounds out 16 Hits to Defeat Etown, 8-1, in First Round of C ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE BASEBALL Lebanon Valley Pounds out 16 Hits to Defeat Etown, 8-1, in First Round of Commonwealth Conference Playoffs ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Top-seeded Lebanon Valley lit up the scoreboard for 16 hits, and LVC pitcher Steve Anspach (Lebanon PA/Northern Lebanon) pitched a four hitter as Elizabethtown fell 8-1 on the opening day of the 2002 Commonwealth Conference playoffs. The
Blue Jays, which fell to 17-22 overall with the loss, received the
brunt of their offensive production from the middle of the lineup, as
catcher Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) went 1-for-4 with a double and Etown's only run, Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) was 1-for-3, Brad Biehl (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg) went 1-for-3, and Steve Luongo (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Highlighting Lebanon Valley's (23-17) offensive efforts were Anspach, who was 3-for-4 with a double, a run, and an RBI, and Jeff Grieger (Riegelsville, PA/Wilson), who went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. In the next game of the Commonwealth Conference playoffs, Elizabethtown will face Widener, which lost to Messiah today in 11 innings, at 11:00 a.m. at Owls Field in West Lawn, PA, Friday, May 3. The loser of Friday morning's game gets eliminated from the tournament, while the winner will advance to face the winner of the afternoon's Lebanon Valley-Messiah game at West Lawn Friday night. non-conference rival Ursinus Monday, and fell in a 10-4 game. Mike Gizzi
hit a two run home run for Ursinus in the top of the third inning.
Ursinus scored its first run in the top of the first inning when Ryan Regensburg led off with a triple and scored on an error at third base following the throw from the outfield. Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) led Etown at the plate by going 2-for-3 with one run scored. Etown returns to action on the road against Lebanon Valley Wednesday for the opening game of the Commonwealth Conference playoffs, a double elimination tournament. Pa. --- Elizabethtown split its final Commonwealth Conference
doubleheader of 2002 Saturday, defeating Widener 7-0 in the first game
and falling to the host Pioneers 7-4 in the second game.
Elizabethtown's record now stands at 17-20 overall and 12-9 in the
conference, while Widener's record is 23-14 overall and 14-7 in the
conference. In the first game, Etown freshman pitcher Drew Kelley (York, PA/Dallastown) threw a two-hit shutout to improve to 6-2 in 2002. Fellow freshmen Steve Luongo (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) and Seth Guida (Reading, PA/Exeter) each smacked two-run homers for Etown in the first game. Derek Lobb (Bangor, PA/Bangor)
got tagged with the loss for Elizabethtown in the second game, as
Widener scored six runs in the first inning to take a lead it never
relinquished. In other conference baseball news, Messiah completed a surprising three game sweep of Lebanon Valley to improve to 13-8 in the Commonwealth and sneak into third place, dropping Etown down to fourth. Following the sweep, Lebanon Valley's record in the conference drops to 14-7. Lebanon Valley gets the first seed in the conference tournament over Widener, since the Flying Dutchmen took two out of three games against Widener this season. Because
of this, Lebanon Valley will host Elizabethtown in the first round of
the conference playoffs for a 2:30 p.m. game Wednesday, May 1.
Meanwhile, Widener will host Messiah at 2:30 Wednesday. Etown
has one more regular season before the beginning of the playoffs at
home against non-conference Ursinus Monday, April 29. Game time is 3:30

Pa. --- With a 10-7 home win over Widener Friday, Elizabethtown
clinched a berth in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs next week.
Depending on what happens in Elizabethtown's doubleheader at Widener
Saturday, the Blue Jays could finish anywhere from fourth place to
second place in the conference. Etown improved to 16-19 overall and
11-8 in the conference with the win, while Widener dropped to 22-13
overall and 13-6 in the Commonwealth. Widener
went ahead 1-0 in the top of the second inning and added another run in
the top of the fourth to go up 2-0. Widener's advantage was short
lived, as Etown responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Center fielder Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) led off the bottom of the fourth for Etown with his third home run of the season. Right fielder Brad Biehl (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg) followed with a double, and he was doubled home by DH Seth Guida (Reading, PA/Exeter Township), tying the game at 2-2. Etown took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth when shortstop Erik Sawchuk (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) hit the Blue Jays' third double of the inning, driving home Guida. Widener
came right back with a run to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the
fifth inning, but Etown responded with a run of its own in the bottom
of the fifth when catcher Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) launched a solo home run, giving Etown a 4-3 lead. Widener
scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning, taking a 7-4 lead, but
Etown struck back with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up
9-7. Guida led off with a double, his second of the game and 11th of the season, and Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) reached base on an error. Justin Brandt (Vienna, VA/Bishop O'Connell) followed with his second home run of the season, a three run shot. Mark Dixon (Havertown, PA/Delaware County Christian) followed with a walk, and Turtell blasted his second homer of the game and eighth home run of 2002, driving home Dixon. Etown scored its final run in the bottom of the eighth inning, when a Biehl single drove home Turtell, who doubled to lead off the inning. Elizabethtown pitcher Ryan Bowe (Quarryville, PA/Solanco) improved to 6-2 in 2002 with the win. He pitched the first eight innings. Widener's starter, Dave Feight, pitched the first 7-2/3 innings and dropped to 5-4 this season with the loss. Turtell led Elizabethtown with three runs and three RBI while going 3-for-5 with two homers and a double at the plate. Guida was 3-for-4 with two runs, one RBI and two doubles, and Biehl was 4-for-5 with one run, one RBI and one double. Brandt was 1-for-4 with three RBI on a home run. Double Record, As Blue Jays Sweep Moravian, 6-2 and 11-5 BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- It was a record-breaking afternoon for the Blue Jays, as Elizabethtown College senior Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) broke Etown's career hit record, and freshman Steve Luongo (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge)
shattered the school's single-season record in doubles during a road
sweep of Moravian Saturday. Etown improves its position in the
Commonwealth Conference playoff race with the wins, moving up to 15-18
overall and 10-8 in the conference. The Blue Jays have also now gone
11-4 in their last 15 games following a 4-14 start. Moravian fell to
12-20 overall and 6-12 in the conference with the losses. Turtell entered the doubleheader just two hits shy of Etown's hit record of 164, initially set by Chris Grubb in 1993 and tied by Chris Romig in 2000. Turtell
went 2-for-3 in the first game to tie the record, then batted 2-for-3
again in the second game to boost his career total to 166. He also had
two RBI and two runs scored for the Blue Jays Saturday. Luongo entered Saturday's games with 16 doubles this season, one away from the record of 17 set by Andy Barrick in 1988 and tied by Romig in 1999. Luongo
finished the day with two doubles on a 3-for-7 overall performance to
set a new record at 18. He also recorded three RBI and a run scored on
the day. Etown scored four runs in the third inning to go ahead to stay in the first game against Moravian. Drew Kelley (York, PA/Dallastown) went the full seven innings on the mound for Etown, striking out six and spreading out seven hits to allow just two runs. Kelley recorded no walks as he improved his record to 5-2 in 2002. In the second game, Etown scored seven runs in the fifth inning to erase a 3-2 deficit. Derek Lobb (Bangor, PA/Bangor)
started on the mound for Etown, pitched the first six innings and got
the win to improve to 3-2. He struck out nine batters and walked one as
he gave up three earned runs. Luongo moved over from first base to pitch the bottom of the seventh inning, striking out one and allowing no one to reach base. to pound Commonwealth Conference rival Moravian, 11-2, at home in a
nine-inning game Friday. Etown improves to 13-18 overall and 8-8 in the
conference with the win, while Moravian falls to 12-18 overall and 6-10
in the Commonwealth. Bowe went the
distance on the mound for Etown, spreading six hits over nine innings,
whiffing seven and walking just one Moravian batter. He allowed two
unearned runs in the sixth inning, and improved to 6-2 in 2002 with the
win. Elizabethtown scored its first run in
the bottom of the first inning, added another run in the bottom of the
fifth, and scored once again in the sixth. In the bottom of the
seventh, Etown scored twice more before its eighth-inning explosion.
The Blue Jays totaled 13 hits on the day. Freshman Justin Brandt (Vienna, VA/Bishop O'Connell)
went 2-for-3 at the plate and blasted the first home run of his career.
He also led the Blue Jays with three runs scored, and he hit a double. Brad Biehl (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg) led Etown in base hits by going 3-for-4. He also scored a run and drove in another on a sacrifice fly. Three Blue Jays had a pair of RBI, including Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman), who was 2-for-3 with a run, Mark Dixon (Havertown, PA/Delaware County Christian), who batted 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, and Seth Guida (Reading, PA/Exeter), who was 2-for-5 with a double. Also recording two hits for Etown was Erik Sawchuck (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford), who was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Jeff Melia was the only Moravian batter to record more than one hit. He went 2-for-4 at the plate. Moravian starter Stephen Tomaszewski was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs and four earned runs in seven innings. comparison, Etown totaled six home runs as a team all year in 2001, and

Pa. --- Elizabethtown picked up its third consecutive win Friday,
pounding Commonwealth Conference rival Messiah in a nine inning game at
home, 11-4. The Blue Jays improve to 8-15 overall and 4-5 in the
conference with the win, while Messiah drops to 10-13-1 overall and 3-6
in the Commonwealth with the loss. Messiah scored a pair of runs off Etown starter Ryan Bowe (Solanco, PA/Quarryville) in the top of the first inning, but after that rough start, Bowe settled down and allowed just two more runs over the next eight innings. In a nine inning complete game, Bowe
gave up nine hits and just three earned runs while improving to 4-2
this season. He also struck out four batters and walked three. Etown
took the lead to stay with three runs in the bottom of the second
inning. The Blue Jays added one more in the third, two more in the
fifth, four more in the seventh, and one more run in the bottom of the

taking the second game 9-6. Etown's record now stands at 6-15 overall
and 3-5 in the conference, while Juniata is now 9-10 overall and 3-5 in
the conference following the split. Etown
held a 4-0 lead at the conclusion of the fifth inning in the first
game, but Juniata struck back with five runs in the top of the sixth to
take the victory. Clint Wevodau (Annville, PA/Northern Lebanon) pitched a complete game for Juniata in the win, allowing three earned runs and eight hits. In the second game, Derek Lobb (Bangor, PA/Bangor) picked up the win for Elizabethtown, pitching six and two thirds innings, allowing just two earned runs and nine hits. Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst), Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) and Seth Guida (Reading, PA/Exeter) all pounded out home runs for Etown in the first game. Turtell's was a solo shot in the first inning, Duppstadt followed with a two RBI homer in the first, and Guida smacked his two RBI homer in the third inning. Ryan Bowe (Quarryville, PA/Solanco)
went the full seven innings in the first game, allowing just four hits
and three runs while striking out three to improve to 2-2 overall. Turtell and Duppstadt each homered again in the second game, with Duppstadt's blast coming in the fifth inning and Turtell's
happening in the sixth, but they were not enough to erase the seven run

Back to top 3/14/2002 Lebanon Valley Comes from Behind to Defeat Etown, 7-6, in Commonwealth Open ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE BASEBALL Lebanon Valley Comes from Behind to Defeat Etown, 7-6, in Commonwealth Opener ANNVILLE, Pa. --- Lebanon Valley capitalized on a three-run performance in the bottom of the ninth inning to take a 7-6 victory over Elizabethtown in the teams' Commonwealth Conference opener in Annville Thursday. Due to a change in the way Commonwealth Conference schedules its season, teams now play three games against each other, one nine inning game at one site and one doubleheader of two seven inning games at the other site, in the course of a week. In previous years, conference opponents would face each other for just one doubleheader of seven-inning games at one location. Elizabethtown (2-9) will return to action Friday, March 15 on the road against NCAA Division II West Chester, in the make-up of a rained out game Wednesday, and the Blue Jays will host Lebanon Valley Saturday, March 16. picked up its first win of the 2002 season, defeating Davis &
Elkins, 4-0, in its first game at Ft. Pierce, FL, Sunday. On Monday,
the Blue Jays fell to Concordia, 5-0. Etown is now 1-3 overall, and all
of its games thus far have been played against NCAA Division II teams. Ryan Bowe (Quarryville, PA/Solanco)
pitched a gem against Davis & Elkins, going the game's full seven
innings and allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out
one. It was the first complete game shutout by an Elizabethtown pitcher
since 1999. Freshman first baseman Steve Luongo (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge)
went two-for-two with one run and one RBI against Davis & Elkins.
There were no extra base hits in the game, and Elizabethtown totaled
seven hits. Luongo went one for three with one double. Fellow freshman Justin Brandt (Vienna, VA/Bishop O'Connell) batted one for two with one double, and Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) hit one for three and had one stolen base.
