Pa. --- Elizabethtown played its final regular season game against
non-conference rival Ursinus Monday, and fell in a 10-4 game. Mike Gizzi
hit a two run home run for Ursinus in the top of the third inning.
Ursinus scored its first run in the top of the first inning when Ryan Regensburg led off with a triple and scored on an error at third base following the throw from the outfield. Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) led Etown at the plate by going 2-for-3 with one run scored. Etown returns to action on the road against Lebanon Valley Wednesday for the opening game of the Commonwealth Conference playoffs, a double elimination tournament. Pa. --- Elizabethtown split its final Commonwealth Conference
doubleheader of 2002 Saturday, defeating Widener 7-0 in the first game
and falling to the host Pioneers 7-4 in the second game.
Elizabethtown's record now stands at 17-20 overall and 12-9 in the
conference, while Widener's record is 23-14 overall and 14-7 in the
conference. In the first game, Etown freshman pitcher Drew Kelley (York, PA/Dallastown) threw a two-hit shutout to improve to 6-2 in 2002. Fellow freshmen Steve Luongo (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) and Seth Guida (Reading, PA/Exeter) each smacked two-run homers for Etown in the first game. Derek Lobb (Bangor, PA/Bangor)
got tagged with the loss for Elizabethtown in the second game, as
Widener scored six runs in the first inning to take a lead it never
relinquished. In other conference baseball news, Messiah completed a surprising three game sweep of Lebanon Valley to improve to 13-8 in the Commonwealth and sneak into third place, dropping Etown down to fourth. Following the sweep, Lebanon Valley's record in the conference drops to 14-7. Lebanon Valley gets the first seed in the conference tournament over Widener, since the Flying Dutchmen took two out of three games against Widener this season. Because
of this, Lebanon Valley will host Elizabethtown in the first round of
the conference playoffs for a 2:30 p.m. game Wednesday, May 1.
Meanwhile, Widener will host Messiah at 2:30 Wednesday. Etown
has one more regular season before the beginning of the playoffs at
home against non-conference Ursinus Monday, April 29. Game time is 3:30

Pa. --- With a 10-7 home win over Widener Friday, Elizabethtown
clinched a berth in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs next week.
Depending on what happens in Elizabethtown's doubleheader at Widener
Saturday, the Blue Jays could finish anywhere from fourth place to
second place in the conference. Etown improved to 16-19 overall and
11-8 in the conference with the win, while Widener dropped to 22-13
overall and 13-6 in the Commonwealth. Widener
went ahead 1-0 in the top of the second inning and added another run in
the top of the fourth to go up 2-0. Widener's advantage was short
lived, as Etown responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Center fielder Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) led off the bottom of the fourth for Etown with his third home run of the season. Right fielder Brad Biehl (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg) followed with a double, and he was doubled home by DH Seth Guida (Reading, PA/Exeter Township), tying the game at 2-2. Etown took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth when shortstop Erik Sawchuk (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) hit the Blue Jays' third double of the inning, driving home Guida. Widener
came right back with a run to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the
fifth inning, but Etown responded with a run of its own in the bottom
of the fifth when catcher Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) launched a solo home run, giving Etown a 4-3 lead. Widener
scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning, taking a 7-4 lead, but
Etown struck back with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up
9-7. Guida led off with a double, his second of the game and 11th of the season, and Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) reached base on an error. Justin Brandt (Vienna, VA/Bishop O'Connell) followed with his second home run of the season, a three run shot. Mark Dixon (Havertown, PA/Delaware County Christian) followed with a walk, and Turtell blasted his second homer of the game and eighth home run of 2002, driving home Dixon. Etown scored its final run in the bottom of the eighth inning, when a Biehl single drove home Turtell, who doubled to lead off the inning. Elizabethtown pitcher Ryan Bowe (Quarryville, PA/Solanco) improved to 6-2 in 2002 with the win. He pitched the first eight innings. Widener's starter, Dave Feight, pitched the first 7-2/3 innings and dropped to 5-4 this season with the loss. Turtell led Elizabethtown with three runs and three RBI while going 3-for-5 with two homers and a double at the plate. Guida was 3-for-4 with two runs, one RBI and two doubles, and Biehl was 4-for-5 with one run, one RBI and one double. Brandt was 1-for-4 with three RBI on a home run. Double Record, As Blue Jays Sweep Moravian, 6-2 and 11-5 BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- It was a record-breaking afternoon for the Blue Jays, as Elizabethtown College senior Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) broke Etown's career hit record, and freshman Steve Luongo (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge)
shattered the school's single-season record in doubles during a road
sweep of Moravian Saturday. Etown improves its position in the
Commonwealth Conference playoff race with the wins, moving up to 15-18
overall and 10-8 in the conference. The Blue Jays have also now gone
11-4 in their last 15 games following a 4-14 start. Moravian fell to
12-20 overall and 6-12 in the conference with the losses. Turtell entered the doubleheader just two hits shy of Etown's hit record of 164, initially set by Chris Grubb in 1993 and tied by Chris Romig in 2000. Turtell
went 2-for-3 in the first game to tie the record, then batted 2-for-3
again in the second game to boost his career total to 166. He also had
two RBI and two runs scored for the Blue Jays Saturday. Luongo entered Saturday's games with 16 doubles this season, one away from the record of 17 set by Andy Barrick in 1988 and tied by Romig in 1999. Luongo
finished the day with two doubles on a 3-for-7 overall performance to
set a new record at 18. He also recorded three RBI and a run scored on
the day. Etown scored four runs in the third inning to go ahead to stay in the first game against Moravian. Drew Kelley (York, PA/Dallastown) went the full seven innings on the mound for Etown, striking out six and spreading out seven hits to allow just two runs. Kelley recorded no walks as he improved his record to 5-2 in 2002. In the second game, Etown scored seven runs in the fifth inning to erase a 3-2 deficit. Derek Lobb (Bangor, PA/Bangor)
started on the mound for Etown, pitched the first six innings and got
the win to improve to 3-2. He struck out nine batters and walked one as
he gave up three earned runs. Luongo moved over from first base to pitch the bottom of the seventh inning, striking out one and allowing no one to reach base. Elizabethtown returns to action on the road against local rival Franklin and Marshall Sunday, April 21. to pound Commonwealth Conference rival Moravian, 11-2, at home in a
nine-inning game Friday. Etown improves to 13-18 overall and 8-8 in the
conference with the win, while Moravian falls to 12-18 overall and 6-10
in the Commonwealth. Bowe went the
distance on the mound for Etown, spreading six hits over nine innings,
whiffing seven and walking just one Moravian batter. He allowed two
unearned runs in the sixth inning, and improved to 6-2 in 2002 with the
win. Elizabethtown scored its first run in
the bottom of the first inning, added another run in the bottom of the
fifth, and scored once again in the sixth. In the bottom of the
seventh, Etown scored twice more before its eighth-inning explosion.
The Blue Jays totaled 13 hits on the day. Freshman Justin Brandt (Vienna, VA/Bishop O'Connell)
went 2-for-3 at the plate and blasted the first home run of his career.
He also led the Blue Jays with three runs scored, and he hit a double. Brad Biehl (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg) led Etown in base hits by going 3-for-4. He also scored a run and drove in another on a sacrifice fly. Three Blue Jays had a pair of RBI, including Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman), who was 2-for-3 with a run, Mark Dixon (Havertown, PA/Delaware County Christian), who batted 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, and Seth Guida (Reading, PA/Exeter), who was 2-for-5 with a double. Also recording two hits for Etown was Erik Sawchuck (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford), who was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Jeff Melia was the only Moravian batter to record more than one hit. He went 2-for-4 at the plate. Moravian starter Stephen Tomaszewski was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs and four earned runs in seven innings. Elizabethtown returns to action Saturday, April 20 on the road at Moravian for a pair of seven-inning conference games. Susquehanna. Etown fell in extra innings in the first game, 7-5, but
won the second game, 5-1. Also, Etown senior Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) posted one hit for the day, bringing his career total to 162 — just two shy of the Elizabethtown program record of 164. Drew Kelley (York, PA/Dallastown)
pitched a complete game en route to getting the win for Etown in the
second game. Going six innings, he allowed just one unearned run and
seven hits. He struck out three batters and walked one as he improved
to 3-2. Highlights at the plate for Etown included Brad Biehl (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg), who went a combined 4-for-6 with two runs and two RBI, Steve Luongo (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge), who went 3-for-6 on the day with a double, one run and two RBI, and Justin Brandt (Vienna, VA/Bishop O'Connell), who went 4-for-8 with one run and one RBI. Luongo now has 16 doubles this season, just one shy of the Elizabethtown program record of 17. Etown returns to action on the road Sunday, April 14 against Arcadia University. Friday's nine-inning contenst, fall to 5-18 overall and 4-9 in the
conference with the loss. Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst)
smacked a home run, his sixth of the season, for the Blue Jays. In
comparison, Etown totaled six home runs as a team all year in 2001, and
Turtell's dinger was the Blue Jays' 14th of 2002. Steve Luongo (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) pitched the final two innings for Etown for his second save of the season. Etown
returns to action as the host of Susquehanna for a pair of seven inning

to defeat the host Lions 8-7 in a non-conference nine inning game
Thursday. The College of New Jersey (13-7) actually out-hit Etown
16-10, but the Blue Jays made no errors in the field. Steve Luongo (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) hit a home run and had a double for Elizabethtown (7-15), and Brad Biehl (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg) had two hits and drove in two runs. Drew Kelley (York, PA/Dallastown) picked up the win, his second of the season, on the mound for Etown. Eric Lau (Dillsburg, PA/Northern) got a save. Elizabethtown returns to action Friday as host of Commonwealth Conference rival Messiah. Pa. --- Elizabethtown picked up its third consecutive win Friday,
pounding Commonwealth Conference rival Messiah in a nine inning game at
home, 11-4. The Blue Jays improve to 8-15 overall and 4-5 in the
conference with the win, while Messiah drops to 10-13-1 overall and 3-6
in the Commonwealth with the loss. Messiah scored a pair of runs off Etown starter Ryan Bowe (Solanco, PA/Quarryville) in the top of the first inning, but after that rough start, Bowe settled down and allowed just two more runs over the next eight innings. In a nine inning complete game, Bowe
gave up nine hits and just three earned runs while improving to 4-2
this season. He also struck out four batters and walked three. Etown
took the lead to stay with three runs in the bottom of the second
inning. The Blue Jays added one more in the third, two more in the
fifth, four more in the seventh, and one more run in the bottom of the
eighth inning. Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) went 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored for the Blue Jays, and he had a double. Brad Biehl (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg) batted 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run, and freshman Justin Brandt (Vienna, VA/Bishop O'Connell) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. was 2-for-5 with one run and a double, is 15th two-bagger of the
season. He is now just two doubles away from tying the Etown program
record, which stands at 17, for most doubles in a season. Also coming
up on a record is senior Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst), who went 2-for-5 with a home run, his fifth of the season, a double, five RBI and two runs scored. Turtell's career hit total now stands at 157, seven hits shy of the program career record of 164. Also posting strong offensive performances for Etown were Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) and Mark Dixon (Havertown, PA/Delaware County Christian), each of whom went 2-for-4 at the plate.
