Back to top 5/3/2002 Etown Eliminated from Conference Playoffs, Blue Jays Defeat Widener, 9-1, F ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE BASEBALL Etown Eliminated from Conference Playoffs, Blue Jays Defeat Widener, 9-1, Fall to Messiah 13-3 in Nightcap WEST LAWN, Pa. --- For the first time in three years, Elizabethtown will not be playing in the NCAA Division III regional baseball tournament. The Blue Jays were eliminated from the Commonwealth Conference playoffs Friday night with a 13-3 loss to Messiah at Owls Field in West Lawn, Pa. Etown staved off elimination earlier in the day by defeating Widener 9-1. Ryan Bowe (Quarryville, PA/Solanco) spread out seven hits in a nine-inning complete game in the Blue Jays victory over second-seeded Widener in the first game of the day, knocking the Pioneers out of the playoffs. He struck out seven batters and walked two while improving to 8-2 in 2002. Steve Luongo (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) led the Blue Jays at the plate by going 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored. Back to top 5/1/2002 Lebanon Valley Pounds out 16 Hits to Defeat Etown, 8-1, in First Round of C ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE BASEBALL Lebanon Valley Pounds out 16 Hits to Defeat Etown, 8-1, in First Round of Commonwealth Conference Playoffs ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Top-seeded Lebanon Valley lit up the scoreboard for 16 hits, and LVC pitcher Steve Anspach (Lebanon PA/Northern Lebanon) pitched a four hitter as Elizabethtown fell 8-1 on the opening day of the 2002 Commonwealth Conference playoffs. The
Blue Jays, which fell to 17-22 overall with the loss, received the
brunt of their offensive production from the middle of the lineup, as
catcher Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) went 1-for-4 with a double and Etown's only run, Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) was 1-for-3, Brad Biehl (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg) went 1-for-3, and Steve Luongo (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Highlighting Lebanon Valley's (23-17) offensive efforts were Anspach, who was 3-for-4 with a double, a run, and an RBI, and Jeff Grieger (Riegelsville, PA/Wilson), who went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. In the next game of the Commonwealth Conference playoffs, Elizabethtown will face Widener, which lost to Messiah today in 11 innings, at 11:00 a.m. at Owls Field in West Lawn, PA, Friday, May 3. The loser of Friday morning's game gets eliminated from the tournament, while the winner will advance to face the winner of the afternoon's Lebanon Valley-Messiah game at West Lawn Friday night. |
