Elizabethtown Out-Lasts Moravian, 4-3 in 10 Innings, Defeats Albright 7-6, In Commonwealth Conference Playoffs to Advance to Saturday

WEST LAWN, Pa. --- In a pair of thrilling games, Elizabethtown first outlasted Moravian in a 10-inning Commonwealth Conference playoff game at Owls Field at Ted Palka Park in West Lawn, Pa. Friday, coming from behind to win 4-3, and then scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning of its second game to defeat Albright, 7-6. With the wins, Elizabethtown will advance to face Messiah at noon Saturday at Owls Field. If the Blue Jays win that game, they will play Messiah again in the double elimination tournament at 3:00 p.m. Saturday for the conference title and an automatic NCAA tournament bid.

Until the final inning, the first game was very much a pitchers' duel between Etown starter Mike Nocar (Lambertville, NJ/South Hunderton) and Moravian starter Chris Clancy (Kendall Park, NJ/Bishop Ahr), both of whom threw complete games in the extra-inning contest. Nocar allowed just four hits, three runs and two walks in ten innings of work while striking out five and hitting two batters. Clancy spread 11 hits over 9-1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs, four runs and three walks. Clancy struck out eight Blue Jay hitters.

Moravian scored its first run in the top of the fifth inning as Ethan Ordog (Roebling, NJ/Holy Cross) was hit by a Nocar pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Mike Sofka (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) single. In the course of the first five innings, Elizabethtown failed to capitalize on three Moravian errors and did not score.
The Blue Jays got their first run in the bottom of the sixth as Seth Guida (Reading, PA/Exeter) scored.

The score remained 1-1 at the close of the ninth inning, and Moravian went up 3-1 in the top of the tenth, as Clancy was hit by another Nocar pitch and scored on another Sofka single. Greg Peters (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley) scored Moravian's other run in the top of the tenth, as he advanced home on a Nocar balk.

Elizabethtown scored three runs in the bottom of the tenth to win the game, as Adam Rebert (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) drove home Guida, who reached base via a single, Jon Weitz (Marlboro, PA/Marlboro) singled home Rebert, and Jon Kalejta (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) singled home Weitz in his only hit of the game after going 0-for-5 in his previous at-bats.

Rebert hit 3-for-5 with a triple, one run and one RBI for Etown, and Guida hit 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Weitz was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI, Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) hit 2-for-4, and Steve Luongo (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) hit 2-for-5 for the Blue Jays.

Sofka led Moravian at the plate by going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In the second game, Etown went up 6-3 through seven innings, but Albright scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game. Etown out-hit Albright 13-8, but the Blue Jays committed six errors against three for Albright.

Jon Chwirut (Rockville, MD/Heights) got the win in relief for Etown, pitching the final 1-2/3 innings and allowing one hit and one earned run while striking out two.
Duppstadt hit 3-for-5 with one run in the second game, Guida batted 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBI, and Luongo hit 2-for-4 with two runs, one double and one RBI. Kalejta batted 2-for-5 with one run and a steal.
