top-seeded Messiah College in a 1-0 pitchers' duel Wednesday. As a
result, Etown (19-19) will face Moravian College in its next game in
the double elimination tournament Friday, while Messiah (22-12) will

threw a masterful game for the Blue Jays but still got the loss. He
spread just four Messiah hits, all of them singles, over eight innings
of work in a complete game effort, and he did not walk a single batter.
Nocar also had five strikeouts for the Blue Jays. Messiah scored its only run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Joshua Clabaugh (Dillsburg, PA/Northern) singled with one out, stole second base, and was driven home in the next at bat on a single by Ryan Garner (Vienna, VA/James Madison). They were Messiah's only hits of the inning, and it was Messiah's only multiple-hit inning of the game. Etown
had seven hits in the game and stranded ten runners. The Blue Jays left
runners on base at the conclusion of all but two of their nine turns at
bat. Messiah pitcher Dave Henninger (Mt. Holly Springs, PA/Carlisle) earned the win after going 8.1 innings, allowing six hits and two walks, and striking out 12 Etown batters. Matthew Allen (Hellertown, PA/Wilson)
took over on the mound for Messiah with one out in the ninth inning and

Elizabethtown College baseball team clinched the number four seed in
the Commonwealth Conference playoffs Saturday by splitting a road
doubleheader with first-place Messiah College, winning the first game
11-7 and losing the second game 11-5. The Blue Jays' victory in the
first game was driven by a thrilling seventh inning as Etown scored
eight runs, as Blue Jay senior Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) broke the Etown career home run record with a grand slam, and as Etown junior Steve Luongo (Palm Coast, FL – Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) tied an NCAA record with two homers in a single inning. In
the first game, Messiah (21-12, 15-6) scored two runs in the bottom of
the first, and Etown (19-18, 11-10) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the
second as Luongo hit a two RBI single driving in Dean Whetham (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine), who reached base on an error, and Eric Wetzel (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg), who singled. In the next at-bat, Mike Nocar (Lambertville, NJ/South Hunderton) hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Adam Rebert (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg), who was hit by a pitch in the second inning. Messiah
tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the third inning and went up 7-3 in
the bottom of the fifth inning. With Elizabethtown up in the top of the
seventh, Luongo homered to lead off the inning and cut the Messiah lead to 7-4. Nocar then drew a walk, and following an Etown out, Jon Kalejta (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) singled. Eric Guise (Bendersville, PA/Biglerville) followed with another single to load the bases, and Duppstadt came to the plate and smashed his program record-breaking grand slam to give Etown an 8-7 lead. The blast gave Duppstadt
his ninth homer of the season and the 17th home run of his career,
thereby breaking the old Etown record of 16 in a career set by Darrell Justh '89. Immediately following the grand slam, Whetham singled. Following another Etown out, Rebert was hit by another pitch, bringing Luongo to the plate for the second time in the top of the seventh inning. Luongo
launched a three-run homer to give Etown an 11-7 lead and tie the NCAA
Division III record for most home runs in an inning with two, a feat
that has been achieved by multiple players over many years. Matt Woehnker (Colts Neck, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy), who pitched the final two innings in relief for Elizabethtown and allowed just one hit, earned the victory in the first game. It was his first win of the season. Luongo wound up with six RBI in the first game, and Duppstadt drove in four runs. In
the second game, Etown led 5-3 going into the bottom of the sixth
inning, but Messiah lit up the scoreboard with eight runs in the bottom
of the sixth to snatch an 11-5 victory. Guise was the only Etown player with more than one hit in the game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored as Messiah pitcher Matthew Allen held Etown to seven hits while throwing a complete game. By earning the fourth seed in the conference playoffs, Etown will travel back to top-seeded Messiah Wednesday, April 5 for a 2:30 p.m. Commonwealth Conference playoff nine-inning game. The Commonwealth playoffs is a double elimination tournament which will continue after Wednesday at Owls Field in West Lawn, PA Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8, and all playoff games are nine innings in length.
