Pa. --- Elizabethtown dropped to 18-17 overall and 10-9 in the
Commonwealth Conference with a 6-1 loss in a single nine-inning game to
first-place Messiah (20-11, 14-5) Friday afternoon. Dave
Henninger pitched a complete game for Messiah, spreading one run, three
hits, three walks and three hit batters over the course of nine innings
while striking out ten. Etown got on the scoreboard first in the game when Bryan Torresani (Hatboro, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) walked to lead off the inning and ultimately scored on a Henninger balk after reaching third base. Messiah
came right back with a run in the top of the fourth inning, added two
more runs in the top of the seventh, and scored three more in the top
of the eighth as Chris Regan, Chris Heisey and Peter Dyson hit
consecutive solo home runs. Eric Wetzel (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg) led Etown at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance. Elizabethtown will return to action in its final games of the regular season on the road at Messiah in a noon conference doubleheader Saturday, May 1. Pa. --- Elizabethtown dropped to 18-16 overall in 2004 with a narrow
5-4 home loss to nationally eighth-ranked Rowan University, which
improved to 31-5 overall with the win, Wednesday. Etown
threw seven pitchers in the game, and Rowan used six pitchers. The
visiting Profs out-hit Etown 11-7. Rowan scored single runs in each of
the first three innings, but Etown scored two runs in the bottom of the
second and added two more in the bottom of the third to go up 4-3. The
score remained there until the top of the seventh inning, when Rowan
scored a pair of runs to go up 5-4. The score remained the same through
the final two and a half innings. First-year catcher Bryan Torresani (Hatboro, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) drove in three of Elizabethtown's four runs and batted 1-for-3 with a walk. Adam Rebert (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) scored one run for Etown and drove in another while batting 1-for-3 with a walk, and he pitched one scoreless inning as well. Pa. --- Elizabethtown won an 18-10 non-conference game over Gettysburg
Tuesday to improve to 18-15 overall. Gettysburg drops to 16-19-1 with
the loss. The visiting Bullets scored seven runs in the top of the
fourth inning and added three more in the top of the eighth.
Elizabethtown tallied two runs in the bottom of the second, scored six
runs in the bottom of the fourth, scored three more in the bottom of
the fifth, and exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh
inning. Three Blue Jay players smacked home runs, including first-year left fielder Dean Whetham (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine),
who hit his first collegiate homer on a three-run shot and went 3-for-5
with one run, a double and four RBI for the day; junior third baseman Adam Rebert (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg), who batted 3-for-5 with three runs, a double and two RBI; and senior right fielder Mike Nocar (Lambertville, NJ/South Hunderton), who hit 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and two walks. Etown sophomore shortstop Jon Kalejta (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) went 3-for-6 with two runs, one RBI and a stolen base. First-year second baseman Zach Bright (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunderton) batted 2-for-5 with two runs, a walk and an RBI, and senior center fielder Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) hit 3-for-5 with two runs, three RBI, a triple and a walk for Etown. Senior designated hitter Mark Bentz (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) scored three runs and drove in two more while hitting 1-for-5, and junior first baseman Eric Wetzel (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg) hit 2-for-6 with two runs scored. First-year catcher Bryan Torresani (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) hit 2-for-4 with three RBI, a double and one run scored, and first-year left fielder Mark Greider (Butler, NJ/Butler) doubled in his only at-bat. On the mound, Jon Weitz (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro)
pitched 4-1/3 innings of relief for Etown and earned the victory, his
second of the year, while allowing three unearned runs and one walk
while striking out two. Pa. --- Elizabethtown hosted Lebanon Valley in a Commonwealth
Conference doubleheader Saturday and split with the Flying Dutchmen,
losing the first game 9-4 in eight innings and winning the second game
8-6. Etown's record currently stands at 17-15 overall and 10-8 in the
conference, while Lebanon Valley is now 13-18 overall and 9-9 in the
conference. The games got underway an hour and a half later than
scheduled due to the heavy rains that fell in the Etown area Friday
evening. Etown senior Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) tied the Etown career home run record with a solo shot in the third inning of the second game to bring his career total to 16. The record has stood since 1989, when it was set by Darrell Justh '89. Etown
built a 7-2 lead by the conclusion of the fourth inning in the second
game and held off Lebanon Valley the rest of the way as the Flying
Dutchmen scored at least one run every inning from the third inning
through the end of the game. In the first
game, Etown scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score
at 4-4 and send the game into extra innings, only to see Lebanon Valley
score five runs in the top of the eighth, with four of them coming on a
grand slam by Craig Denlinger, who finished the day with three homers. Etown will return to action at home Sunday, April 25 in a 1:00 p.m. non-conference game against Arcadia University. currently in his fifth season leading the Blue Jay baseball program,
got his 100th career victory Friday as Elizabethtown defeated Lebanon
Valley 10-3 on the road in a nine inning Commonwealth Conference game
to improve to 16-14 overall and 9-7 in the conference in 2004. Lebanon
Valley drops to 12-16 overall and 8-8 in the conference with the loss. Through his first four years at the helm of the Etown baseball program, Jones
has led the team to four consecutive conference playoff appearances,
one Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth League title, one
Commonwealth Conference championship, two NCAA Division III tournament
appearances, and, most recently, a Commonwealth Conference runner-up
finish in 2003. Etown's offense ignited for
six runs in the top of the second inning, and from there it was no
looking back as Etown scored one more run in the top of the fourth and
three more runs in the top of the ninth inning. Lebanon Valley scored
one run in the bottom of the fifth inning and added two more runs in
the bottom of the ninth inning. Etown shortstop and leadoff hitter Jon Kalejta (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) scored
three runs while batting 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and two stolen
bases. Batting in the number two spot for Etown, first-year left
fielder Mike Donahue (Hatfield, PA/Lansdale Catholic) also hit 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, and he scored two runs and drove in one more. Center fielder Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) scored two runs and drove in two more while batting 1-for-5 with a stolen base, and first-year right fielder Dean Whetham (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) drove in a pair of runs while going 2-for-3 with a walk and a sacrifice fly at the plate for Etown. Third baseman Adam Rebert (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) had Etown's only extra-base hit in the game, a double, while hitting 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. On the mound for the Blue Jays, starter Drew Kelley (York, PA/Dallastown)
went the distance and spread 11 hits over nine innings of work. He
allowed three runs, just two of them earned, walked only one batter and
struck out two to improve his record to 5-3 in 2004. Pa. --- A five run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted
Elizabethtown to an 11-8 Commonwealth Conference victory over Moravian
in a nine inning game at home Tuesday. The Blue Jays improve to 15-14
overall and 8-7 in the conference with the win, while Moravian drops to
8-17 overall and 7-8 in the conference with the loss. The victory is
also the 99th collegiate head coaching career win for Etown coach Matt Jones, who is in his fifth season directing the Blue Jays. Also in the course of the game, Etown senior center fielder Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley),
who already owns the Elizabethtown career hit record, moved to within
one of the Elizabethtown career home run record when he drilled a
leadoff homer in the top of the third inning. The home run was his
seventh this season, and it was the fifteenth home run of his career,
moving him into a tie for second on Etown's career home run list with Dave Arpa '94, who drilled 15 homers from 1991 to 1994. The current Elizabethtown career record in home runs is owned by Darrell Justh '89, who hit 16 from 1986 to 1989. Etown got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning when Eric Wetzel (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg) singled to lead off the inning and was driven home on a single by Dave Fisher (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan).
Moravian evened the score in the top of the third, but Etown struck
back with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning when
Duppstadt led off with his home run, Dean Whetham (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) followed with a double and was immediately singled home by Wetzel, who in turn scored on a triple by Eric Guise (Bendersville, PA/Biglerville). Moravian
added two more runs in the top of the fourth to narrow Etown's lead to
4-3, and Etown struck back with a run in the bottom of the fourth Mike Donahue (Hatfield, PA/Lansdale Catholic)
led off with a triple and was driven home on a fielder's choice by
Whetham. Etown scored again to take a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the
fifth when Fisher led off with a walk, was moved to third on a Bryan Torresani (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) single, and was sent home of a Jon Kalejta (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) single. In the top of the seventh, Moravian scored a pair of runs to cut Etown's lead to 6-5, and Moravian took the lead in the top of the eighth with two more runs to go ahead 7-6. Etown exploded for five
runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to seal the victory. Kalejta
led off the bottom of the eighth with a single, and Donahue followed by
laying down a sacrifice bunt that was bobbled by the Moravian third
baseman, enabling him to reach first safely. Duppstadt followed with a
double that drove home Kalejta, movedDonahue to third, and tied the
game 7-7. With one out, Wetzel singled to drive home Donahue and
Duppstadt and give Etown a 9-7 lead. Steve Luongo (Palm Coast, FL/Ridge, NJ)
followed with a fielder's choice that forced out Wetzel. With two outs,
Guise followed with a single. In the next at-bat, Fisher tripled to
send them both Luongo and Guise home and boost Etown's lead to 11-7.
Moravian added one run in the top of the ninth. Drew Kelley (York, PA/Dallastown) took
the mound in relief for Etown and pitched the final 1-2/3 innings to
get the victory and improve to 4-3 this season. He struck out five
batters in that span and allowed just one run. Etown starting pitcher Mike Nocar (Lambertville, NJ/South Hunderton) whiffed 10 batters in 7-1/3 innings of work as well. Kalejta
wound up batting 4-for-5 with a run and an RBI over the course of the
game, and Duppstadt hit 2-for-4 with a double, a homer, two runs, and
two RBI. Wetzel hit 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI, and Fisher
went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run and three RBI. Donahue was 1-for-3
with two runs and a triple, and Guise was 2-for-5 with a triple, a run
and an RBI for Etown. Pa. --- Elizabethtown downed non-conference opponent Ursinus 16-6 in a
wind-swept nine-inning game at home Monday. The Blue Jays, which
improve to 14-14 overall in 2004 with the win, bounced back from an
early 4-0 deficit to win 16-6. Ursinus drops to 14-12-2 overall with
the loss. Ursinus scored three runs in the
top of the first inning and added a fourth in the top of the second
inning. The Blue Jays scored two runs in the bottom of the second, and
they went ahead to stay with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to
take a 7-2 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Etown added eight more
runs to take a 15-4 lead. Ursinus scored one in the top of the seventh
and once more in the top of the ninth, and Etown scored its final run
in the bottom of the eighth. Etown pounded out 17 hits in the game, and center fielder Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) drove
in six runs for Elizabethtown, scored twice, and batted 3-for-6 with a
home run, a triple, and a stolen base. Second baseman Eric Wetzel (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg) also belted a home run for Etown, and he hit 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. DH Eric Guise (Bendersville, PA/Biglerville) batted 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs and two RBI for Etown, and catcher Bryan Torresani (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) hit 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. belted out 13 hits over the course of the game, just four less than
Etown, but the Bears also committed five errors against none for the
Blue Jays. Etown pitcher Tyler Hoffman (Phoenix, MD/Loyola Blakefield) started on the mound and earned the victory, and Jon Weitz (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) pitched the final four innings for Etown in relief and spread two runs over that span. Pa. --- Elizabethtown bested Dickinson 2-0 in a non-conference road
game Saturday to improve to 13-14 overall. Dickinson drops to 12-15-1
overall with the loss. Sophomore pitcher Scott Beard (Willow Grove, PA/LaSalle College H.S.)
started on the mound for Etown and went 8-2/3 innings, striking out 12
batters and allowing just three hits and four walks. First-year Andy Mees (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) got the final Dickinson batter out to earn the save. At the plate, Eric Guise (Bendersville, PA/Biglerville) batted 2-for-4 at the plate, hit a triple, and drove in both of Etown's runs. Mike Donahue (Hatfield, PA/Lansdale Catholic) scored both of Etown's runs, stole one base and went 1-for-3 at the plate. Etown scored in the top of the third inning as well as in the top of the eighth inning. Etown will return to action Monday, April 19 in a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game against Ursinus College. broke the Elizabethtown College career base hit record with a fifth
inning leadoff home run in the first game of a Commonwealth Conference
doubleheader on the road at Albright College Saturday. Etown lost the
first game of the doubleheader 8-7 and won the second game 12-6, and
the Blue Jays' record now stands at 12-14 overall and 7-7 in the
conference. Albright is now 10-11 overall and 6-3 in the conference. A
total of six home runs were hit over the course of the two games by
Etown players, and Albright players launched four more homers.
Also hitting two home runs over the course of the day was sophomore shortstop Jon Kalejta (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown),
who launched one in each game while going 3-for-8 with four runs, three
RBI, one double and one walk, and junior left fielder and pitcher Steve Luongo (Palm Coast, FL—Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge, NJ), who also hit one out of the park in each game while going 4-for-7 with two runs and three RBI on the day. had a good day at the plate for Etown, as he went 3-for-7 with two RBI,
one run, one sacrifice fly and one double. Senior right fielder Mike Nocar (Lambertville, NJ/South Hunderton) batted 2-for-3 with with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI. Etown's winning pitcher in the second game was starter Adam Rebert (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg),
who went five innings, allowed two hits, one run and three walks while
striking out three batters to improve to 2-2 on the season. In
the first game, Etown held a 2-0 lead by the top of the third inning
only to see Albright score four runs in the bottom of the third.
Albright went up 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth, and by the end of the
fifth inning the score was 6-4 in Albright's favor. Albright held a 7-5
lead at the end of the sixth inning. Etown scored two more runs in the
top of the seventh to tie the game 7-7, but Albright won the game with
a run in the bottom of the seventh. In the
second game, Etown scored two runs in the top of the first, added three
more in the second and one more in the third to take a 6-0 lead. Etown
went up 9-0 with three more runs in the top of the sixth, and Albright
cut the lead to 9-3 in the bottom of the sixth. Etown added three more
runs to take a 12-3 lead in the top of the seventh, and Albright scored
its final three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Etown will return to action on the road Sunday, April 18 at 1:00 p.m. in a road non-conference game against Dickinson College. tied the College's career hit record by collecting a pair of singles in
Etown's 13-3 home win over Commonwealth Conference rival Albright
College Friday to boost his career total to 178. 178 is also the number
of hits Chris Turtell '02 collected from 1999 to 2002 to set the
current Etown career hit record.
The Blue Jays
(11-13 overall, 6-6 Commonwealth) scored their first two runs in the
bottom of the first inning, added five more runs in the bottom of the
third, and scored six more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Albright
(9-9 overall, 5-2 Commonwealth) scored one run in the top of the second
inning and added two more in the top of the sixth. Eric Wetzel (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg) batted 3-for-4 with three RBI, one run and one sacrifice fly for the Blue Jays. drilled 19 hits over the course of the game, and Blue Jay batters
walked eight times. Etown pitcher Drew Kelley (York, PA/Dallastown) started
the game and went eight innings to earn his third win of the season. He
allowed just six hits, three runs, one earned run and one walk while
striking out ten batters in that span. Scott Beard (Willow Grove, PA/La Salle College H.S.) pitched the ninth inning for Etown and struck out two batters. Senior center fielder Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) had a monster of a game, batting 4-for-6 with two home runs, a triple, a double, three runs scored and two RBI. Duppstadt is also now just three hits away from the Elizabethtown career hit record of 178, set by Chris Turtell '02. He is currently hitting .429 this season with 33 base hits. Also knocking the ball out of the park for the Blue Jays Tuesday was left fielder Steve Luongo (Palm Coast, FL/Ridge, NJ), who went 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBI, one run, and a home run. Adam Rebert (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and one RBI for Etown, and Dean Wetham (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) and Seth Guida (Reading, PA/Exeter) each hit 3-for-5 for Etown as well, with Wetham scoring a run and Guida driving in two. Adam Shephard (Conowingo, MD/Rising Sun) went 2-for-5 with a run, a double and an RBI at the plate for Etown, and Jon Kalejta (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) hit 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Etown starting pitcher Drew Kelley (York, PA/Dallastown) went eight innings and spread four earned runs over that period while striking out six Widener batters to get the win. Matt Woehnker (Colts Neck, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to get the save. Etown
improves to 9-12 overall and 4-5 in the Commonwealth Conference with
the victory, while Widener drops to 8-15 overall and 3-6 in the
conference with the loss. Etown will return to action at home Thursday, April 8 in a 3:00 p.m. nine-inning Commonwealth Conference game against Moravian College. Pa. --- Elizabethtown hosted Johns Hopkins, currently ranked first in
the nation in NCAA Division III and sporting a spotless 19-0 record
entering the game, Monday. Johns Hopkins came away with a 14-4 win to
earn its 20th victory of the season and drop Etown to 8-12 overall.
Hopkins pounded out 16 hits in the game and stranded just five runners.
Etown, on the other hand, had nearly as many hits with 12, but Etown
marooned 12 runners on base. Etown pitcher Mike Nocar (Lambertville, NJ/South Hunderton)
pitched two innings and struck out six Hopkins batters. Johns Hopkins
scored 11 of its 14 runs in the opening four innings. Etown first-year
reliever Andy Mees (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) took the mound to
start the fifth inning and allowed just three runs over the last five
innings of the game while walking none and striking out three. At the plate, first baseman Matt Eshenour (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey)
entered the game as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning and wound up
going 2-for-2 with two doubles while driving in half of Elizabethtown's
runs. First-year Etown right field Dean Wetham (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, and designated hitter Eric Guise (Bendersville, PA/Biglerville) batted 2-for-4 with one RBI. Catcher Seth Guida (Reading, PA/Exeter) went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Steve Luongo (Palm Coast, FL/Ridge, NJ) hit 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored for Etown while playing left field. Etown will return to action on the road Tuesday, April 6 against Commonwealth Conference rival Widener University in a nine-inning game. It will be the teams' third attempt since Friday to get the game played. The non-conference game against Delaware Valley Etown was originally scheduled to play Tuesday has been postponed. The fifth inning first game homer was the 179th hit of Duppstadt's career, breaking the old record of 178 set by Chris Turtell '02 from 1999 to 2002. Duppstadt launched
another home run in the second game as well, and over the course of the
day he went 3-for-7 at the plate with three runs, four RBI, two home
runs, and one stolen base. His career hit total now stands at 181.
Duppstadt walked
and scored a run in his first plate appearance of the day, and he
singled to lead off the bottom of the third inning and ultimately
scored again in his second trip to the plate. As Etown sent 11 batters
to the plate in the third inning, he walked again near the end of the
inning. The record tying hit came during the Blue Jays' six-run
explosion in the fifth inning, as he drove in a run on a single and
