RE: Problems sending to MSN & Hotmail E-mail Addresses

Yesterday, ITS networking staff identified a problem with sending messages to MSN and Hotmail addresses. Since MSN and Hotmail are hosted by the same Microsoft owned servers, it would be natural that both were displaying the same behavior. After contacting Comcast Business Solutions, ITS learned that MSN/Hotmail was having trouble with volumes of virus related e-mail and had contacted Comcast for a list of address spaces that were safe to block. Unfortunately several of Comcast Business Solutions customers (including Elizabethtown College) were inadvertently included. During this time, Elizabethtown College users were left with the inability to send messages to MSN or Hotmail since Tuesday, December 13. ITS recommends resending all messages destined to any MSN or Hotmail account between and including, Monday, December 12 and Monday, December 19.

An Important Message from the ITS Department

1.   In order to maintain peak performance and reliability of our e-mail system, ITS must conduct periodic database maintenance. This maintenance will cause scheduled interruption of access to your e-mail. All maintenance will begin at 8 a.m. and may last several hours. Please plan accordingly. The schedule is as follows:

    * December 23
         Students, Class of 2006
    * December 24
         Students, Class of 2007
    * December 26
         Students, Class of 2008, 2009
    * December 27
         Staff (last names A-M) & all remaining students/graduates
    * December 28
         Staff (last names N-Z)
    * December 29
         Faculty (all), "Affiliates" (ie CoB), and "Shared" (ie clubs and orgs)

2.      ITS recommends to anyone that will be off campus for an extended period of time during the holidays, change your e-mail/network password now so that it won’t expire while you are off campus. You may use Options in Outlook Web Access (mail.etown.edu) to change your password.

3.      We remind the campus community not to click on links in AIM. We have had a number of computers infected by clicking on an AIM link.

Viruses spread through Instant Messages

The ITS Department warns the campus community that some colleges are being hit with worms and other viruses that are being spread through Instant Messenger.  Use the same caution with IM as you would with email.  That is, do not click on any links in IM and do not open any attachments even if they appear to be coming from a friend.  For more information on safe computing with Instant Messenger, see http://antivirus.about.com/od/securitytips/a/imsafety.htm

E-town Unplugged! - ITS offers wireless access

E-town Unplugged!
Wire-cutting ceremony Friday, Sept. 16

The High Library and ITS invites you to a wire-cutting ceremony, Friday, Sept. 16 at 10:30 a.m. Join President Ted Long as he cuts the cord and launches E-town’s new wireless access points at High Library and Brossman Commons. Coffee, donuts and “hotspot” snacks will be available.

After the wire-cutting, you’ll be able to use any wireless-ready laptop to surf the internet on all 4 levels of the library. In Brossman, you can pick up the signal on the first floor, in areas such as the Blue Bean, the Jay’s Nest and the patio, and near the student offices on the second floor.

The Blue Bean will also be celebrating the advent of wireless, with special promotions.

ITS has chosen Trapeze Networks Mobility Points to provide the wireless access.  There will be two modes of access.  Guest access will allow any wireless computer to connect to the Internet on an unsecured network.  Those wanting to connect to campus servers should use the ETOWN_USER access for a secure connection.

The wireless initiative has been designed to extend the campus network into areas are not covered by the wired network.  After the initial trial this fall, ITS will begin planning for the installation of additional wireless access points in classrooms buildings and other areas of the campus.

New Look for Department Web Pages

Several academic and administrative departments volunteered to have their websites “re-skinned” this summer by our team of student workers.  This project provided new skills in web development and graphic design for students Katy Vogel, Edmund Bates, and Scott Bilich.  The student leader for the team was Nathan Matias, who designed templates to allow departments to more easily move their web pages onto the new web server.

Under the supervision of Steve Wayde, Dir. of Database Services, and the help of Jill Petronio, Asst Dir of Database Services, the team of students collaborated with faculty and staff in Biology, Campus Security, Chemistry, Communications, History, ITS, Payroll Office, and the Young Center to move their web pages to a new format on the new web server.  Several other departments have volunteered their websites (Campus Services, Occupational Therapy, Political Science, and Social Work), and will be done this fall.

The goal of the new web server is to allow each department to manage the “content” of their websites in a quick and easy manner, with little knowledge of HTML or sophisticated tools like Dreamweaver.  The new system provides the departments with a custom look while maintaining a consistent style with the rest of the new website.

Nate Matias also created MS FrontPage templates for individual faculty members to use to create their personal home pages.

ITS will be hiring some student web assistants during the fall and spring semesters with the goal of having most departmental web pages moved to the new server by the end of the academic year.

Media Services Move to the ITS Help desk

Requests for equipment for classroom instruction and meetings should be emailed to: mediaservices@etown.edu

Small equipment may be picked up in Nicarry-105 at the ITS Help Desk between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM Monday - Friday. Media Services has been combined with the ITS Help Desk and we are no longer running a media services operation in Steinman. All calls should be directed to the new ITS Help Desk number, x3333.

As in the past, your requests for equipment should be sent as early as possible. We may not be able to honor requests that are not received at least 48 hours in advance. All requests for equipment delivery are to be sent via email.

Karen Eatherton will be in charge of the equipment deliveries. She will be working with Chris Moy and the student assistants to insure a high level of service.

New Presentation Technology in Twelve Classrooms

ITS began working with faculty in the Spring to determine the best location for new classroom technology.  Based on these discussions, new systems have been placed in twelve classrooms.  According to Ron Heasley, the Exec. Dir. of ITS, this brings the total number of “smart classrooms” on campus to 30.

Chris Moy, Instructional Technology Specialist, worked with faculty and vendors to select components that will simplify the use of the classroom technology and add new capabilities.  Chris will be offering training to faculty early in the fall semester.

The rooms that have been outfitted with new technology are:

Nicarry-108, 203, 228
Esbenshade-163, 263, 362, 364 and Gibble Theater
Zug - 126
Steinman-101 and BLR
Musser - 232

This technology was funded in part from a grant received from the PA Dept. of Education.  Leslie Finney, Dir. of Corp and Foundation Program in the Development office wrote the grant proposal.  The remaining funds were provided from the ITS capital budget.

One of the more interesting  technologies that was purchased with the grant is a stereo projection system that is being installed in Musser-232.    This system will initially be used to allow students to better visualize molecular structures.  Dr. John Ranck, Professor of Chemistry, has been trying to get funding for this system for several years.

Students will be required to wear special plastic glasses with polarized lenses to view the 3D structures.  What they will see should greatly enhance their understanding of complex molecular structures.
