Back to top 8/30/2005 New Look for Department Web Pages Several
academic and administrative departments volunteered to have their
websites “re-skinned” this summer by our team of student workers.
This project provided new skills in web development and graphic design
for students Katy Vogel, Edmund Bates, and Scott Bilich. The
student leader for the team was Nathan Matias, who designed templates
to allow departments to more easily move their web pages onto the new
web server. Under
the supervision of Steve Wayde, Dir. of Database Services, and the help
of Jill Petronio, Asst Dir of Database Services, the team of students
collaborated with faculty and staff in Biology, Campus Security,
Chemistry, Communications, History, ITS, Payroll Office, and the Young
Center to move their web pages to a new format on the new web
server. Several other departments have volunteered their websites
(Campus Services, Occupational Therapy, Political Science, and Social
Work), and will be done this fall. The
goal of the new web server is to allow each department to manage the
“content” of their websites in a quick and easy manner, with little
knowledge of HTML or sophisticated tools like Dreamweaver. The
new system provides the departments with a custom look while
maintaining a consistent style with the rest of the new website. Nate Matias also created MS FrontPage templates for individual faculty members to use to create their personal home pages. ITS
will be hiring some student web assistants during the fall and spring
semesters with the goal of having most departmental web pages moved to
the new server by the end of the academic year. Back to top 8/30/2005 Media Services Move to the ITS Help desk Requests for equipment for classroom instruction and meetings should be emailed to: mediaservices@etown.edu
Small equipment may be picked up in Nicarry-105 at the ITS Help Desk
between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM Monday - Friday. Media Services has been
combined with the ITS Help Desk and we are no longer running a media
services operation in Steinman. All calls should be directed to the new
ITS Help Desk number, x3333. Back to top 8/30/2005 New Presentation Technology in Twelve Classrooms ITS began working with faculty in the Spring to determine the best location for new classroom technology. Based on these discussions, new systems have been placed in twelve classrooms. According to Ron Heasley, the Exec. Dir. of ITS, this brings the total number of “smart classrooms” on campus to 30. Chris
Moy, Instructional Technology Specialist, worked with faculty and
vendors to select components that will simplify the use of the
classroom technology and add new capabilities. Chris will be offering training to faculty early in the fall semester. The rooms that have been outfitted with new technology are: Nicarry-108, 203, 228 This technology was funded in part from a grant received from the PA Dept. of Education. Leslie Finney, Dir. of Corp and Foundation Program in the Development office wrote the grant proposal. The remaining funds were provided from the ITS capital budget. One of the more interesting technologies that was purchased with the grant is a stereo projection system that is being installed in Musser-232. This system will initially be used to allow students to better visualize molecular structures. Dr. John Ranck, Professor of Chemistry, has been trying to get funding for this system for several years. Students will be required to wear special plastic glasses with polarized lenses to view the 3D structures. What they will see should greatly enhance their understanding of complex molecular structures. Back to top 8/19/2005 ITS Computer Installation Schedule A couple of years ago, ITS instituted the following computer installation schedule: Summer – Computer labs and new
