Internet Services Restored - Potential Email Issues

Comcast, our Internet Service Provider, is responsible for hosting our Domain Name Service names.  The Comcast DNS server stopped advertising our DNS entries at approximately 8 PM Wednesday evening.  This prevented outside users from locating our servers from the Internet. Users from outside of our network were unable to resolve any of our public names, including but not limited to www.etown.edu, mail.etown.edu, users.etown.edu, and ecweb.etown.edu.

Comcast Business Solutions corrected the problem as of 9:30 AM Thursday morning.  As it takes some time for the changes to propagate throughout the Internet, some services may not have been operational until Thursday afternoon.

Inbound email traffic and some outbound traffic were interrupted by this situation.  In most cases, mail would have bounced back to the sender if an error occurred.  If the bounced message said “do not resend”, the message would have gone through sometime yesterday after Comcast corrected the problem.  Any other messages that bounced back to the sender should be resent.

Please contact the ITS Help Desk at helpdesk@etown.edu if you have questions regarding this situation.
