Back to top 5/24/2006 MoleCVUE meeting The MoleCVUE consortium will meet for its annual meeting on May 30 through June 3, 2006. The emphasis of this meeting will be on visualization of large molecules, although, as always, all areas of chemistry and education will be discussed. The meetings will be held in Musser 232 and Musser 231, between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM on these days. All who are interested are invited to attend. Back to top 5/24/2006 The Department welcomes Leah Eller Elizabethtown College has hired Dr. Leah Eller as our new organic chemist. This is an important position for us since the Biology majors and allied health students, among others, all take our organic chemistry classes. Leah will have her work cut out for her. Leah received her BS in Chemistry and Biology, with honors from Randolph-Macon College and went on to earn her PhD from UT Austin. She went on to a post-doctoral position at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory "as a means of testing my devotion to education". We welcome Dr. Leah Eller as a new member of our department. Back to top 5/24/2006 The Department welcomes Kristi Kneas Dr. Kristi Kneas will be arriving at Elizabethtown College over the summer of 2006 and will become our analytical chemist. Kristi received her AB from Randolph-Macon Woman's College and went on to earn her PhD from the University of Virginia. She began her career as a faculty member at Maryville College and recently decided to move on to bigger and better things at Elizabethtown College. She has an extensive history of publications and presentations as well as external funding for her research. We are enthusiastic about having her join the faculty. Back to top 5/24/2006 John Ranck and Ray Reeder retire After devoting a combined total of 80 years to Elizabethtown College, John Ranck and Ray Reeder are retiring from the faculty. Their contributions were celebrated at several events: the Chemistry Awards Banquet on April 25, at a Faculty Assembly meeting on April 25, at a First Thursday event on May 4, and at a Retirement Reception on May 10. John Rank, an alumnus of the college, began teaching at Elizabethtown in 1963. He has always been a strong proponent of undergraduate research and has served as the College's representative to the CUR. He made many contributions in the use of computers and technology in the classroom. Most recently, he helped set up a new three-dimensional projection system and gave a workshop to the faculty on how to use it. John started the MoleCVUE consortion in the early 90's and this group continues to meet. Their next meeting is on May 30 - June 3, 2006. Ray Reeder began teaching at Elizabethtown in 1968. He has been a strong advocate of discovery learning, where, instead of performing cookbook types of lab exercises, the students are required to figure out what an experiment is teaching them and, in this way, learn the material at a much deeper level. He got into the administrative side of things at the College, at one time serving as Dean. He was also involved in setting up the Continuing Education program at the College. He served as Department Chair for more years that he cares to remember. Both Ray and John have made significant contributions to Elizabethtown College. The department wishes them all the best in their retirements. |
