Back to top 5/26/2006 A note regarding vulnerability in Symantec Antivirus software Information and Technology Services (ITS) is informing the campus community that Symantec has announced vulnerability in the Corporate Edition of the Symantec Antivirus software that we run on campus. While this is potentially a serious threat to a computer, it should be noted that there are no known instances of anyone writing code (a virus or worm) that takes advantage of this vulnerability. Symantec Corporate is investigating the threat and will release an update to their software if required. As a Corporate customer we will receive any patch as soon as it is released and we would likely be warned of any known viruses before they hit our campus. We will then pass the information along to the campus community. It is likely that there will be news stories in the next few days discussing this vulnerability. Remember that news agencies tend to trump up their stories for the audience. There is no reason to be overly concerned about the security of your computer. On the other hand, this is a good time to review some basic security measures: 1. Are you running version 10 of the Antivirus software? Click here for more detail. 2. Are your virus definitions up-to-date? If off campus for the summer, click here. 3. Are you storing important files in your Private folder on the campus server? Files stored in your Private folder will be backed up each day. 4. Are you extremely cautious about opening email attachments? Never open an attachment unless you know the sender and you expected them to send you an attachment. 5. Are you extremely cautious about clicking on links in email attachments? 6. Are you extremely cautious about clicking on links in IM? Following these basic computer security principles will go a long ways towards protecting your files.
