Back to top 10/31/2007 Three Blue Jays named to All-Commonwealth Conference team FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown Places Three on All-Commonwealth Conference Field Hockey Team ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team has placed three players on the All-Commonwealth Conference team, as voted upon by the league's five head coaches and released Wednesday. Sophomore defender Caitlin Smith (Haddonfield, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) was a first-team selection while junior forward Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) and sophomore forward Brenna Noon (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) were selected to the second team. The trio led the Blue Jays to an 11-7 overall record and third place in the Commonwealth Conference with a 2-2 mark under fourth-year head coach Sharon Sweger entering Wednesday's conference playoff game at Messiah College. Smith started all 18 games on defense and recorded one goal and one assist for three points. She helped the Blue Jays to a team goals against average of 1.55 and six shutouts during the season. Angstadt, a three-year starter and second-team All-Conference selection last season, led the Blue Jays with career highs of 10 goals and 10 assists for 30 points in 18 games. She scored five goals and added two assists in four conference matches, and among her four two-goal games was an overtime goal in a 3-2 win at Swarthmore College on Sept. 20. In 58 career matches, Angstadt has scored 20 goals and dished out 18 assists for a total of 58 points, while scoring six game-winning goals. Noon, a two-year starter, finished the regular season with nine goals and two assists for 20 points. She scored an overtime goal in the Blue Jays' 2-1 win at Widener University on Oct. 13 and tallied a hat trick in a 4-1 win at Vassar College on Sept. 29. In 40 career matches, Noon has 14 goals and six assists for a total of 34 points, while scoring four game-winning goals. Nikki Bailey scored a pair of goals for the Falcons (15-4), who will travel to Lebanon Valley College for the conference championship on Saturday afternoon. Junior Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) scored her first goal 5:56 into the game to give the Blue Jays (11-8) a 1-0 lead. Junior Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep) scored 6:20 into the second half to put Elizabethtown up 2-0. Messiah College battled back on Bailey’s first goal at the 41:27 mark, and Lindsey Hunter tied the score 2-2 with 19:50 left in regulation. Junior Sarah McFarland (Ambler, PA/Wissahickon) scored for Elizabethtown off an assist from junior Tiffany Vogel (Annville, PA/Palmyra) to give the Blue Jays a 3-2 lead with 11:25 left to play. Bailey’s second goal came with 3:49 left in regulation to tie the match and force overtime, where Strausbaugh scored the game-winner. Messiah finished with a 27-8 advantage in shots and a 16-1 edge in penalty corners over Elizabethtown. In men's soccer, the third-seeded Blue Jays (13-5 overall, 3-2 Commonwealth) will travel to second-seeded Lycoming College (13-4-1 overall, 3-2 Commonwealth) for a 3:00 p.m. match while the third-seeded field hockey squad (11-7 overall, 2-2 Commonwealth) will play at second-seeded Messiah College (14-4 overall, 3-1 Commonwealth) at 4:00 p.m. The men's soccer team won two road matches to capture the Commonwealth Conference championship last season, earning shutout wins at Messiah (1-0) and former conference member Susquehanna University (2-0). Lycoming earned the second seed in the tournament by virtue of their 2-1 win over Elizabethtown at home on Oct. 17. The Warriors have won five of their last six matches entering the postseason, while the Blue Jays have split their last six contests after opening the season with a 10-2 record. The winner of Wednesday's match will face the winner of the other semifinal between top-seeded Messiah and fourth-seeded Albright College on Saturday in the conference championship match, with the winner gaining an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. The field hockey squad has played a challenging schedule, with six of their seven losses coming to teams ranked in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III Top 20 at some point during the season, including five to currently-ranked teams. In their regular-season meeting with Messiah, the Blue Jays fell 3-2 in overtime at home. The Falcons have won four straight matches and are currently ranked 10th in the NFHCA Division III poll. Wednesday's winner will play on Saturday at top-seeded Lebanon Valley in the Commonwealth Conference title match, with the champion earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Sophomores Brenna Noon (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) and Courtney Beck (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) also scored for Elizabethtown, which has posted victories on each of the last six Saturdays. Jessica Zatwarnicki added an insurance goal with 16:49 to play for the Bears (9-2 overall), who are the defending NCAA Division III champions. The goal by DeMatteis, her fourth of the season, came with 6:16 left in the first overtime period as she batted home a pass by sophomore Brenna Noon (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) to give the Blue Jays (7-3 overall) their fifth consecutive victory. King's (5-3 overall), which dropped its third straight after winning its first five matches of the year, had tied the game just 1:12 into the second half as Megan Farrell scored off an assist by Grace King. King's (5-3) vs. Elizabethtown (7-3) Shots: King's 6, Elizabethtown 19 Back to top 9/24/2007 Megan Angstadt and Liz Hannegan earn Commonwealth Conference honors FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Megan Angstadt and Liz Hannegan Sweep Commonwealth Conference Field Hockey Honors ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College junior Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) and sophomore Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) were honored by the Commonwealth Conference after leading the Blue Jays to three straight victories in field hockey last week. Angstadt was selected as the conference Player of the Week while Hannegan was recognized as the Goalie of the Week for the second time this season as the Blue Jays posted three wins in as many matches, including the 500th win in program history over Kean University on Saturday. Angstadt scored three goals and dished out three assists to lead the Blue Jay offense. Two of her goals were game-winners, including an overtime goal in 3-2 win at Swarthmore College on Thursday. Angstadt posted at least one point in all three matches and was involved in six of the Blue Jays’ eight goals for the week. Hannegan earned shutouts in two of her three wins last week, and in all she allowed two goals in 216 minutes of action while making nine saves. For the season, Hannegan has recorded four shutouts and has a 1.28 goals against average. The Blue Jays (6-3 overall) carry a four-game winning streak into Wednesday's match against King's College at 4:30 p.m. on Wolf Field. The Blue Jays received 16 points in the survey to place third behind defending conference champion Lebanon Valley College (20 points, three first-place votes) and defending NCAA Division III runner-up Messiah College (18 points, two first-place votes). Widener University (12 points) and Albright College (9 points) finished out the rankings. Elizabethtown finished 16-6 overall last season and qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time since 1988. Head coach Sharon Sweger was recognized by her peers as the Commonwealth Conference Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. The Blue Jays make their 2007 season debut on Friday, Aug. 31 against College Misericordia in the opening game of the Mule Classic at Muhlenberg College. DeMatteis gave the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead with 21:05 elapsed in the contest as she scored off a long hit, and added her second goal of the match with 19:28 remaining as she tipped in a pass from fellow first-year player Julie Foster (Reading, PA/Oley Valley). Elizabethtown (1-0) closed out the scoring in the match with 11:45 left as junior Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep) deflected home a long hit from junior Tiffany Vogel (Annville, PA/Palmyra). Back to top 3/19/2007 Elizabethtown places 15 student-athletes on NFHCA National Academic Squad FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Field Hockey Places 15 on National Academic Squad ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. –-- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team has placed 15 members on the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Academic Squad, the NFHCA has announced. In addition, the Blue Jays are one of 83 Division III programs to receive the National Academic Team Award for having a minimum 3.0 team grade-point average during the first semester of the 2007-08 academic year. To be eligible for the National Academic Squad, student-athletes must maintain a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point average through the first semester of the 2007-08 academic year. The Blue Jays were tied for the fifth-highest total of honorees among the 115 schools with at least one National Academic Squad member, trailing Vassar College (18), St. Mary's College of Maryland (17), and Amherst College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (16 each).
