Back to top 11/7/2007 Eight Blue Jays named to All-Conference team; Filewicz - Rookie of the Year FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown Places Eight on All-Commonwealth Conference Men's Soccer Team ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Eight Elizabethtown men's soccer players have been named All-Commonwealth Conference as voted upon by the league's six head coaches and released Wednesday. Earning first-team honors were senior forward George Severini (Havertown, PA/Haverford), senior midfielder Michael Terry (Beech Creek, PA/Central Mountain) and junior defender Wes Bunting (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey). On the second team were first-year forward Andrew Filewicz (Wenonah, NJ/Northeast Catholic), junior forward Matt Diller (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersberg Academy), junior midfielder Bryan Holt (Hershey, PA/Lower Dauphin), senior midfielder Mike Helsel (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) and senior defender Zach Galbraith (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley). Filewicz was also honored as the conference's Rookie of the Year for the Blue Jays, whose eight All-Conference picks are the most since having eight selections in 1998. The Blue Jays finished 14-6-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the Commonwealth Conference under 25th-year head coach Skip Roderick, advancing to the conference finals for the fifth consecutive season before falling to Messiah College 1-0. Severini leads the Commonwealth Conference with 15 goals and ranks second with 32 points. He posted four two-goal games and scored four game-winning goals for the Blue Jays. Terry is a repeat first-team selection and is All-Conference for the third time in his career. He scored four goals and added an assist for nine points while regularly playing all 90 minutes at his center midfield position. Bunting is also a repeat selection to the first team after starting all 20 games at center back and scoring two goals and four assists for eight points. Filewicz scored a pair of goals and tied for the team lead with seven assists for a total of nine points on the year. He is the first Blue Jay to earn Rookie of the Year honors since Brennan Reichenbach shared the award in 2003. Diller scored 11 goals, including five game-winners, and added four assists for 26 points. Through the end of the conference playoffs, he ranked third in the Commonwealth Conference in both goals and points. Holt started all 20 games at center midfield and finished with a goal and two assists for four points. His goal was a game-winner in a 1-0 win over Drew University on Sept. 13. Helsel finished with two goals and seven assists for 11 points while playing all 20 games for the Blue Jays. He scored in a 4-2 win over Hampden-Sydney College on Sept. 8 and against Wheaton College in a 5-2 victory on Oct. 22. Galbraith started 19 games at right back and finished with three assists while helping the Blue Jay defense limit opponents to 16 goals in 20 matches while recording 10 shutouts. Messiah's Kai Kasiguran was named Player of the Year while Scott Kennell of Lycoming College was selected Coach of the Year. The Falcons (18-2-0 overall), the three-time defending NCAA Division III champions, won their ninth conference championship and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, while the Blue Jays (14-6-0 overall) will learn Sunday evening if they will receive an at-large bid. Kasiguran, who was named tournament Most Valuable Player, gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead with a blast from 25 yards out with just over 20 minutes remaining on the clock. The Blue Jays were outshot by a slight 14-11 margin by the Falcons, while Messiah took six corner kicks to three by Elizabethtown. Men's soccer (14-5-0 overall) will play at Messiah at 1:00 p.m. in search of their second consecutive Commonwealth title. The Blue Jays, who are making their fifth straight appearance in the championship match, defeated Lycoming College 3-0 in semifinal action on Wednesday. Volleyball (30-6 overall) hosts Lebanon Valley at 2:00 p.m. looking for its first-ever conference championship in its fourth trip to the finals. The Blue Jays defeated Widener University 3-0 in the semifinals on Wednesday night to advance to the championship for the second straight year. Women's soccer (17-2-1 overall) plays at Messiah at 6:00 p.m. in a rematch of last year's title match, which the Blue Jays won by a 1-0 score. Elizabethtown earned its sixth trip to the league finals with a 3-1 win over Widener in the semifinals on Tuesday. Admission to all conference postseason events is $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for seniors and $2.00 for students while children under age 6 are admitted free. Back to top 11/1/2007 Jeff Mullen and Matt Diller named second-team Academic All-District FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Jeff Mullen and Matt Diller Named Second-Team Academic All-District in Men's Soccer ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College juniors Jeff Mullen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) and Matt Diller (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) have been named to the ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District Second Team in men's soccer, as voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Mullen, a goalkeeper, is majoring in management and has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.67. In 18 games this season, he has compiled a 14-4 record with nine shutouts. Mullen ranks second in the Commonwealth Conference in both goals against average (0.72) and save percentage (.803). In the classroom, Mullen has made the Dean's List all six semesters, and has participated in the Hershey Foods Honors Program. He is a member of the Academic Integrity Committee and is a recipient of a Provost Scholarship. Diller, a forward, is majoring in business and has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.36. He ranks third in the Commonwealth Conference in both goals (11) and points (26) for the Blue Jays while appearing in all 19 matches. Off the field, Diller has a concentration in entrepreneurship at Elizabethtown and is the manager of the Handcrafted Stone division of Nitterhouse Masonry Products in Chambersburg. In men's soccer, the third-seeded Blue Jays (13-5 overall, 3-2 Commonwealth) will travel to second-seeded Lycoming College (13-4-1 overall, 3-2 Commonwealth) for a 3:00 p.m. match while the third-seeded field hockey squad (11-7 overall, 2-2 Commonwealth) will play at second-seeded Messiah College (14-4 overall, 3-1 Commonwealth) at 4:00 p.m. The men's soccer team won two road matches to capture the Commonwealth Conference championship last season, earning shutout wins at Messiah (1-0) and former conference member Susquehanna University (2-0). Lycoming earned the second seed in the tournament by virtue of their 2-1 win over Elizabethtown at home on Oct. 17. The Warriors have won five of their last six matches entering the postseason, while the Blue Jays have split their last six contests after opening the season with a 10-2 record. Raveling scored two goals and added an assist as the Blue Jays defeated 2006 NCAA Division III finalist Wheaton (Ill.) College 5-2 in their only game of the week last Monday. He opened the scoring at 4:31 and capped a four-goal Blue Jay run with his second goal of the evening at 74:15. Herr Field on Monday afternoon. Matt Dorsey and Mike Rinker scored in the final two minutes of the first half while Patrick Lenehan tallied in the first two minutes of the second half as the fourth-ranked Falcons (17-2 overall, 5-0 Commonwealth) secured the top seed in the conference playoffs, which begin Wednesday. Messiah will host Albright in one semifinal match at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, while the defending champion Blue Jays (13-5 overall, 3-2 Commonwealth) will travel to Lycoming for a 3:00 p.m. match. The winners will meet Saturday for the conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. The Blue Jays (13-4 overall, 3-1 Commonwealth) carry a 13-game home winning streak into the match against the Falcons (15-2 overall, 4-0 Commonwealth), who have won each of the last three NCAA Division III championships. Messiah, ranked fourth in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III poll, holds a 23-17-2 edge in the all-time series, which began in 1980 and has evolved into one of the fiercest rivalries in the nation. The Falcons have not lost at Elizabethtown since 1994, winning six and tying one over that span. Herr Field.
Raveling scored in the fifth minute to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead and capped a four-goal second-half outburst with a rebound goal at 74:15 as the Blue Jays (13-4-0 overall) improved to 10-0 at home this season and won their 13th straight game at Ira R. Herr Field dating to last season. Seniors George Severini (Havertown, PA/Haverford) and Mike Helsel (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) each scored a goal and added an assist for the Blue Jays on Senior Night, while junior Matt Diller (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) added his 10th goal of the season against the Thunder, who were NCAA Division III finalists last year. With a large Homecoming crowd looking on, Severini scored at 35:39 and 40:00 for his fourth two-goal game of the season, while increasing his conference-leading goal total to 13 for the Blue Jays (12-4-0 overall, 3-1-0 Commonwealth). Severini scored his first goal at 35:49 on a penalty kick after he was fouled in the box, and added his second tally of the day at 40:00 as he deflected home a shot by junior Dan Flaherty (West Chester, PA/Henderson). The Blue Jays outshot the Pride (7-9-0 overall, 1-2-0 Commonwealth) 12-7 and finished with an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks. Trailing 1-0, Tanner tied the game with 13:44 left and Pusateri followed with the game-winner with 10:55 to go as the Warriors (11-3-1 overall, 1-1 Commonwealth) defeated the Blue Jays (11-4-0 overall, 2-1 Commonwealth) for the second straight year.

In a match delayed nearly two hours due to rain and lightning, Corday scored his ninth goal of the season on a direct kick to give the Diplomats (13-0-0 overall) just their fifth win over the Blue Jays (10-3-0 overall) in 30 Bronze Boot matches since 1978. The Diplomats finished with a 12-2 edge in shots and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks over the Blue Jays in the contest. Junior Jeff Mullen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) finished with two saves in goal for Elizabethtown, while Zack Zamek did not make any saves for Franklin & Marshall. The Bronze Boot is a soccer shoe originally worn by Al Hershey ’64, who was a two-time All-American at Elizabethtown (1962 and 1963), and he later coached at both Elizabethtown and Franklin & Marshall. The Boot is named for Robert Smith, who coached F&M from 1947 to 1963, and for Ira R. Herr, who coached Etown from 1938 to 1948 and from 1958 to 1960. Elizabethtown regained possession of the boot last season with a 2-1 win over Franklin & Marshall. Since the Smith-Herr Bronze Boot was created in 1978, Elizabethtown has led the series 22-5-3. After Elizabethtown (0-1-0) had taken a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior George Severini (Havertown, PA/Haverford), Thayer scored at 25:58 and again at 58:54 off assists by Anthony Tumbiolo to give the Violets (1-0-0) the win. Severini's goal came at 23:17 as he headed home a corner kick from first-year player Andrew Filewicz (Wenonah, NJ/Northeast Catholic) to give the Blue Jays an early lead. New York University finished with a 21-10 advantage in shots while Elizabethtown took six corner kicks to five by the Violets. Junior Greg Snow (Avon, CT/Suffield Academy) made seven saves in his first career start for the Blue Jays, while Chris Wright finished with two stops for the Violets. The Blue Jays will face Skidmore College on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the second day of the Stevens Classic, after the Thoroughbreds dropped a 4-0 decision to the tourney hosts in Saturday's other game. Home games in ALL CAPS Back to top 8/20/2007 Blue jays picked second in Commonwealth Conference pre-season coach's poll FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown College Men’s Soccer Team Picked Second in Commonwealth Conference Preseason Coaches Poll ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men’s soccer team has been picked to finish second in the Commonwealth Conference in a survey of the league’s six head coaches, the conference office announced Monday. The Blue Jays, who are the defending Commonwealth Conference playoff champions, received two first-place votes and 28 points to rank second behind three-time defending NCAA Division III champion Messiah College, which captured four first-place votes and 30 points in all to take the top spot in the survey. Last season, Elizabethtown finished 11-5-3 overall and in fourth place with a 3-3-1 league record before claiming the conference postseason crown with road wins at Messiah (1-0) and Susquehanna University (2-0). Following Messiah and Elizabethtown in the rankings were Lebanon Valley College (20 points), Widener University (19 points), conference newcomer Lycoming College (15 points) and Albright College (14 points). Head coach Skip Roderick enters his 25th season on the bench of his alma mater with 401 career wins, one of nine coaches in NCAA Division III history with 400 victories in a career. The Blue Jays open their 2007 schedule on Saturday, Sept. 1 against nationally-ranked New York University at the Stevens Institute of Technology Classic. |
