Back to top 12/8/2007 Etown wins nine of 10 matches in 47-6 win over Scranton ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WRESTLING Elizabethtown Defeats Scranton 47-6 MIDDLETOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College wrestling hosted visiting Scranton this afternoon at Middletown High School with the Blue Jays winning 9 of 10 matches in a 47-6 win against the Royals. The Blue Jays (3-4 overall) racked up six falls and a technical fall in the win over Scranton. Sophomore Matt Torresani (Horsham, PA/Hatboro Horsham) scored a technical fall 21-6, 7:00 to give the Blue Jays a 5-0 lead to start the match, while sophomore Eric Rhoads (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) wasted no time securing a fall in 1:46. The Blue Jays swept the final seven bouts, winning by fall for Etown, sophomore Bud Croswell (Newark, DE/Sanford School), first year student Josh Cook (Gardners, PA/Boiling Springs), first year student Bill Meaney (Toms River, NJ/Manchester Twp), sophomore Deron Sharp (Millville, NJ/Millville), and sophomore Tim Katzaman (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing). Sophomore Jereme Heisey (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) picked up his team leading twelth victory by decision 8-4 at 157lbs. Elizabethtown 47, Scranton 6 Back to top 12/6/2007 Blue Jays fall to 6th ranked Delaware Valley, 33-3 ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WRESTLING Elizabethtown Falls to Sixth-Ranked Delaware Valley ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College wrestling fell to sixth ranked Delaware Valley by a score of 33-3 on Thursday evening at home. Sophomore Jereme Heisey (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) earn the only victory for the Blue Jays, winning his 157lb match by decision 3-2 over eighth ranked Ryan Herwig. Heisey started the 3rd period up 1-0, but Herwig escaped to tie the bout with 1:45 remaining, Heisey scored a takedown with less than 30 seconds left to go up 3-1, and a late escape by Herwig ended the match 3-2. Sophomore Bud Croswell (Newark, DE/Sanford School) lost a tough match 7-3 to fourth ranked Jesse Harrington at 149lbs. Croswell scored a takedown early in the first period and built up over five minutes of riding time, but a late stall call and a reversal gave Harrington the lead with less than fifteen seconds left in the match. Elizabethtown hosts Scranton on Saturday at Middletown High School. Delaware Valley 33, Elizabethtown 3 Back to top 12/1/2007 Etown finishes 8th at Spartan Invitational: Terry Bartholomew finishes 2nd ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WRESTLING Elizabethtown Takes Fifth at Spartan Invitational YORK, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College wrestling team finished eighth out of 11 schools at the Spartan Invitational at York College on Saturday, scoring 43.5 points. Sophomore Terry Bartholomew (Point of Rocks, MD/Brunswick) was the top individual finisher for the Blue Jays, as he took second at 141 pounds. Sophomore Deron Sharp (Millville, NJ/Millville) was fourth at 197 pounds and sophomore Tim Katzaman (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) finished fourth at 285 pounds. Bartholomew opened competition with a 7-0 win over Justin Krop of Liberty University, then defeated Josh Flint of Apprentice School 17-6 in quarterfinal action. Bartholomew moved to the finals by pinning Jon Stillo of Centenary College in 1:18, but fell to Colon Lewis of Liberty by an 11-2 score. Sharp posted a 10-5 win over Kendall Ridenour of Apprentice School in his opening match, before being pinned by eventual weight class winner Joe West of Delaware Valley College. Sharp was defeated in the third-place match by Shawn Vanwingerden of College of New Jersey 6-1. Katzaman picked up an 8-5 win over Drew Mackay of Delaware Valley in his initial bout, then pinned Shane Cooley of York in 3:20 to advance to the semifinals, where eighth-ranked Kyle Bilquist of Delaware Valley won 4-0. In his third-place bout, Katzaman dropped a 4-2 decision to 10th-ranked Steve Carbone of College of New Jersey. Delaware Valley won the team championship after winning five of the 10 weight classes. York College's Kyle Flickinger was named Outstanding Wrestler.
Back to top 11/27/2007 Franklin & Marshall defeats Blue Jays 30-18 ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WRESTLING Franklin & Marshall Defeats Elizabethtown, 30-18 LANCASTER, Pa. --- Franklin & Marshall College used three pins to pick up a 30-18 victory over Elizabethtown College in non-conference wrestling action on Tuesday night. The Diplomats (1-0 overall) won six of the eight bouts contested against the Blue Jays (2-3 overall), but needed a pin in the 285-pound match to secure the victory. Earning wins for the Blue Jays were sophomore Eric Rhoads (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central), who boosted his record to 7-1 with a 4-3 decision over Jake Bucha at 133 pounds, and sophomore Bud Croswell (Newark, DE/Sanford School) at 149 pounds as he posted a 14-7 decision over Albert Gianforti to move to 7-0 on the year. Forfeit victories were claimed by first-year student Steve Resnick (Media, PA/Haverford School) at 141 pounds and sophomore Deron Sharp (Millville, NJ/Millville) at 197 pounds. The Golden Bears (3-0 overall) earned decisions in seven of the match's 10 bouts, and went ahead for good in the next-to-last contest of the evening against the Blue Jays (2-2 overall). Senior Pete Achilles (Geneva, NY/Geneva) improved to 8-2 at 125 pounds with his fourth pin of the season against Eddie Harris at 6:25, while sophomore Eric Rhoads (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) moved to 6-1 at 133 pounds with a pin of Rob Vollrath at 7:57. At K Back to top 11/17/2007 Blue Jays split two matches at Messiah Duals ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WRESTLING Blue Jays Split Matches at Messiah Duals GRANTHAM, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College wrestling team competed at the Messiah Duals on Saturday, coming home with a win over Waynesburg College and a loss to Wheaton College to move their record to 2-1 on the season. The Blue Jays lost the opening match against Wheaton College 25-17. Senior Pete Achilles (Geneva, NY/Geneva) opened the dual with a fall in 1:14 over Ben Allen, sophomore Eric Rhoads (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) picked up a forfeit to put the Blue Jays up 12-0. Wheaton 141-pounder Brent Skorup put the Thunder on the board with a fall, but sophomore Bud Croswell (Newark DE/Sanford School) cruised to a first period technical fall (15-0, 2:50) over Rob Jacobson. Wheaton was down 17-6 and reeled off six straight wins to pull away with the victory. The Blue Jays' opponent in the second match was Waynesburg College, and Etown posted a 56-0 win. The Blue Jays (1-0 overall) led 21-0 with five bouts remaining before Johns Hopkins (0-1 overall) posted three straight pins and a decision to tie the match at 21-21 entering the final bout of the night, but Katzaman defeated Vincent Domestico to clinch the victory for Elizabethtown. Picking up pins for the Blue Jays were senior Pete Achilles (Geneva, NY/Geneva) at 125 pounds in 3:54 over Akshay Paintal and sophomore Terry Bartholomew (Point of Rocks, MD/Brunswick) at 141 pounds in 1:18 over Ben Kauffman. Note: Home matches in ALL CAPS; NTS = no team score Back to top 6/19/2007 Elizabethtown to join Metropolitan Intercollegiate Wrestling Assocation FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown College to Join Metropolitan Intercollegiate Wrestling Association ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College has accepted an invitation to join the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (MIWA) for the sport of wrestling beginning in the 2007-08 season. The Blue Jays will join ten other schools in the conference, which produced two NCAA Division III national champions in 2007. Elizabethtown was a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference in wrestling until the end of 2005-06, at which point the MAC discontinued its sponsorship of the sport. In 2006-07, the Blue Jays competed as an independent in wrestling and finished 10th out of 15 teams at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional tournament after posting a 6-5 record in dual matches. Elizabethtown also posted the sixth-highest team grade point average in all of NCAA Division III in 2006-07. Elizabethtown will join ten other schools, including three former MAC rivals, in the MIWA in 2007-08, including Centenary College, Hunter College, former MAC member King’s College (Pa.), SUNY-Maritime, The College of New Jersey, New York University, former MAC member University of Scranton, former MAC member Wilkes University, Yeshiva University and York College (Pa.). The MIWA Championship tournament, which will be hosted by Wilkes in 2008, is an NCAA Division III national championship qualifier tournament. |
