Back to top 12/18/2007 Russo, Fromuth named to NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region team FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Russo, Fromuth Named to NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College junior forward Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) and senior midfielder Jenny Fromuth (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) were selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Division III All-Mid-Atlantic Region team in women's soccer, the NSCAA has announced. Russo was a first-team selection while Fromuth was named to the third team after leading the Blue Jays to a 17-4-1 overall record, a berth in the Commonwealth Conference championship match and the program's second straight trip to the NCAA Division III tournament. Russo was the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year as she led the Blue Jays with 10 goals and nine assists for 29 points in 20 matches, scored at least one point in nine straight matches from Sept. 20 through Oct. 16 and registered at least one point in 15 matches during the season. A second-team All-Region selection last season, Russo has scored 28 goals and added 18 assists for 74 points in 59 career matches. She is the first Elizabethtown player to earn first-team All-Region honors since Dana Moyer in 2005 and the 10th in program history. Fromuth, a two-time first-team All-Conference selection, tallied seven goals and six assists while starting all 22 matches. Three of her goals were game-winners in 1-0 victories for the Blue Jays. She finishes her three-year career with the Blue Jays with 15 goals and 13 assists for 43 points in 63 matches. Back to top 11/10/2007 Union defeats Blue Jays 1-0 in NCAA opener ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S SOCCER Union Downs Elizabethtown 1-0 in NCAA Women's Soccer First-Round Match GENEVA, N.Y. --- Stephanie Cannuli scored midway through the first half as Union College defeated Elizabethtown College 1-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer tournament at William Smith College on Saturday afternoon. The Dutchmen (16-4-0 overall) advance to play Worcester State College, which defeated previously unbeaten William Smith 2-0 in Saturday's opening contest, on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays (17-4-1 overall) outshot Union 17-13 and held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks, but were unable to solve Dutchmen keeper Melissa McDonald, who made five saves in the win. Union tallied the game's only goal at 26:54 when Cannuli scored her third goal of the season off an assist by Caitlin Cuozzo. Year FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Seven Named to All-Commonwealth Conference Team; Jenna Russo Selected Player of the Year ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Junior forward Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) was named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year in women's soccer to lead a group of seven Elizabethtown College players earning All-Conference honors, as voted upon by the league's six head coaches and released Thursday. Senior midfielder Jenny Fromuth (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) and senior defender Jamie Alvanitakis (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) joined Russo on the first time, while junior forward Brooke Dotterer (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts), sophomore midfielder Erin Scott (West Chester, PA/Bishop Shanahan), senior defender Emily Gunter (Hockessin, DE/A.I. duPont) and junior defender Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) were second-team choices. The Blue Jays carry a 17-3-1 overall record into the NCAA Division III tournament, where they will play Union College in a first-round match on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at William Smith College. Russo was named to the first team for the second straight season after being a second-team selection in 2005. She led the Blue Jays with 10 goals and nine assists for 29 points in 19 matches, scored at least one point in nine straight matches from Sept. 20 through Oct. 16 and registered at least one point in 15 matches this year. She is the first Blue Jay to earn conference Player of the Year honors since Dina Jingoli shared the award in 2000, and the first outright Player of the Year since Meredith Uber was honored in 1999. Fromuth, also a repeat selection to the first team, tallied seven goals and six assists while starting all 21 matches. Three of her goals were game-winners in 1-0 victories for the Blue Jays. Alvanitakis was a second-team pick last season, and picked up four assists while starting every game at right back. Three of her assists came on game-winning goals for the Blue Jays. Dotterer is a second-team selection after earning first-team honors in each of her first two years. She scored 10 goals, including five game-winners, and added seven assists for 27 points. Her hat trick gave the Blue Jays a 3-2 overtime win at Lebanon Valley on Oct. 13. Scott scored four goals and added two assists for 10 points while starting all 21 games for the Blue Jays. She scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Widener University on Oct. 20. Gunter was a first-team selection last season and started all 21 games at center back. She contributed one assist on offense, and helped the Blue Jay defense post 15 shutouts to tie a program record set in 1997. Geiger also started all 21 games at left back, and had a career day against Susquehanna University on Oct. 10 with a hat trick in a 4-0 victory. Along with Alvanitakis and Gunter, she helped the Blue Jays compile a 0.65 goals against average on the year. College in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. on the campus of William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y. The Blue Jays (17-3-1 overall) are making their second straight appearance in the NCAA playoffs and sixth in program history after earning an at-large bid following a 3-0 loss at Messiah College in the Commonwealth Conference championship match. Last year, Elizabethtown defeated Richard Stockton College and Montclair State University in overtime in the first two rounds of the tournament before falling to Virginia Wesleyan College in the third round. The Dutchwomen (15-4-0 overall) are appearing in the NCAA tournament for the eighth time in the last nine years and earned an at-large bid following a 2-1 loss to Hamilton College in the Liberty League semifinals. The winner of Saturday's match will advance to a second-round match on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against the winner of Saturday's first match between host William Smith (17-0-1 overall) and Worcester State College (14-5-0 overall). Admission is $6 for general admission, $3 for students (including college students with a valid identification) and senior citizens, $2 for children ages 3 to 12, and free for children under 3. Sophomore Melissa McDonald started all 19 games in goal for the Dutchwomen and finished with seven shutouts and a 0.61 goals against average. The teams have never met in women's soccer, and share just one common opponent this season in Gettysburg College. Elizabethtown posted a 3-0 road win on Oct. 3 while Union defeated the Bullets 2-0 in the Heron Cup at William Smith on Sept. 9. Back to top 11/7/2007 Jamie Alvanitakis named second-team Academic All-District FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Jamie Alvanitakis Named Second-Team Academic All-District in Women's Soccer ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College senior Jamie Alvanitakis (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District Second Team in women's soccer, as voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Alvanitakis, a defender, is an elementary education major with a 3.80 cumulative grade-point average. She has started all 20 matches for the Blue Jays, recording four assists, and has been a key part of an Elizabethtown defense that yielded just five goals in its first 20 games and tied a school record with 15 shutouts on the season. Off the field, Alvanitakis is a member of the Kappa Delta Pi education honor society and is a College Scholar. She plans to serve as a student-teacher during the spring semester. Back to top 11/4/2007 Etown earns NCAA tournament berth FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown Volleyball, Women's Soccer Teams Earn NCAA Division III Tournament Berths ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College volleyball and women's soccer have been selected to compete in the NCAA Division III playoffs, which begin this week. The volleyball team (31-6 overall) will compete in regional action at Haverford College, and will face Neumann College in their opening-round match at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8. Elizabethtown earned an automatic bid after winning the Commonwealth Conference postseason championship. It is the Blue Jays' first NCAA bid since 1986 and the second in program history. The women's soccer team (17-3-1 overall) will face Union College on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 1:30 p.m. in a first-round match at William Smith College. The Blue Jays received an at-large bid after advancing to the Commonwealth Conference finals. The Blue Jays will be making their second straight appearance in the NCAA tournament and the sixth overall in program history. Emily Cope added a goal for the second-ranked Falcons (19-0-0 overall), who avenged a 1-0 loss to the 17th-ranked Blue Jays in last year's title match. With the victory, Messiah earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs, while Elizabethtown (17-3-1 overall) will await an at-large bid. Rowe opened the scoring at 13:12 with an unassisted goal, and extended the Messiah lead to 2-0 at 56:12 off an assist from tournament Most Valuable Player Avie Fitzgerald. Men's soccer (14-5-0 overall) will play at Messiah at 1:00 p.m. in search of their second consecutive Commonwealth title. The Blue Jays, who are making their fifth straight appearance in the championship match, defeated Lycoming College 3-0 in semifinal action on Wednesday. Volleyball (30-6 overall) hosts Lebanon Valley at 2:00 p.m. looking for its first-ever conference championship in its fourth trip to the finals. The Blue Jays defeated Widener University 3-0 in the semifinals on Wednesday night to advance to the championship for the second straight year. Women's soccer (17-2-1 overall) plays at Messiah at 6:00 p.m. in a rematch of last year's title match, which the Blue Jays won by a 1-0 score. Elizabethtown earned its sixth trip to the league finals with a 3-1 win over Widener in the semifinals on Tuesday. Roberts) scored a goal and added an assist as Elizabethtown College defeated Widener University 3-1 in Commonwealth Conference women's soccer semifinal action at Ira R. Herr Field on Tuesday night.
Senior Jenny Fromuth (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) and junior Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) also scored for the 17th-ranked Blue Jays (17-2-1 overall), who will face Messiah College on the road in Saturday's Commonwealth Conference title game after the Falcons defeated Lebanon Valley in Tuesday's other semifinal game. Caryinna Yenchak scored with 2:36 left for the Pride (14-5-1 overall), who fell to the Blue Jays in the conference semifinals for the second consecutive season. The Falcons (17-0 overall, 5-0 Commonwealth) scored five unanswered goals to overcome an early 1-0 deficit and snap the Blue Jays' 11-game winning streak and 17-game unbeaten streak, both school records. Despite the loss, Elizabethtown (16-2-1 overall, 4-1 Commonwealth) will be the second seed in the conference tournament and will host Widener University on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at Ira R. Herr Field in a semifinal match. The 18th-ranked Blue Jays (16-1-1 overall, 4-0-0 Commonwealth) broke the school record of 10 straight wins set twice previously, and extended the school mark for consecutive games without a loss to 17. Etown also posted its 15th shutout of the season to tie the school record set in 1997. Junior Brooke Dotterer (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Alvanitakis was a key part of a Blue Jay defense that posted a pair of 1-0 Commonwealth Conference victories last week over Lycoming and Widener while allowing a total of two shots in 180 minutes of action. With the wins, the Blue Jays have tied a program record with 10 straight victories, extended the program record for consecutive games without a loss to 16, and recorded 14 shutouts on the year to move within one of the school record. Alvanitakis has joined fellow starting defenders Emily Gunter, Carly Hoskins and Gretchen Geiger and starting goalkeeper Angela Freeland as Defender of the Week honorees this season. The Blue Jays (5-1-1 overall) posted their sixth consecutive shutout to set a program record while playing in their second consecutive double-overtime game. The Spartans (5-2-1 overall), ranked 22nd in the latest D3kicks.com Top 25 poll, were shut out for the first time this season. Elizabethtown had the game's two best scoring chances in a 45-second span early in the second half, as junior Jenna Russo hit the crossbar and sophomore Erin Scott fired a shot off the post. The Blue Jays finished with a 15-11 edge in shots, while the Spartans held an 8-5 edge in corner kicks. Fromuth converted on a pass by junior Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) to give the Blue Jays (5-1-0 overall) their fifth straight victory, all by shutout. Three of those wins have been by 1-0 scores, with Fromuth scoring the winning goal in all three victories. The Blue Jays have recorded five straight shutouts for the first time since 1997, when they had four wins and a tie, and have posted five consecutive shutout wins for the first time in program history. Elizabethtown fired 18 shots at goal compared to nine shots by the Lady Royals (1-5-1 overall), but Scranton held a 10-1 edge in corner kicks. Junior Angela Freeland (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) made four saves for Elizabethtown to notch her second shutout of the season while extending her scoreless streak to 288 minutes. Roberts) and senior Jenny Fromuth (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) each scored a goal and added an assist to lead Elizabethtown College to a 4-0 victory over McDaniel College in non-conference women's soccer action at Ira R. Herr Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Junior Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) and sophomore Erin Scott (West Chester, PA/Bishop Shanahan) also scored for the Blue Jays (4-1-0 overall), who have recorded four straight shutouts for the first time since 1997 and notched four consecutive shutout wins for the first time since 1991. Russo gave the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead with 29:45 left in the first half as she took a pass from Dotterer and found the back of the net. Senior Jamie Alvanitakis (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) also earned an assist on the play.
The Blue Jays went ahead 2-0 with 26:40 left in the first half as a missed penalty kick went to Fromuth, who passed to Scott for the goal. Fromuth pushed the Blue Jay lead to 3-0 with 10:11 left in the first half as she took a through pass from junior Jess Hudon (Georgetown, MA/Georgetown) and fired home her third goal of the season. The goal by Fromuth was her first of the season and gave the Blue Jays (1-1-0 overall) their first victory of the year after suffering a 2-1 overtime loss to Roger Williams University in their season opener on Saturday. The Elizabethtown defense held the Bobcats (0-2-0 overall) without a shot for the final 12 minutes, 48 seconds to preserve the 1-0 lead, and kept Frostburg State pinned in their defensive end for most of the final few minutes of the contest. The Blue Jays finished with a 9-7 edge in shots for the match, while the teams each attempted three corner kicks. As in the first game, junior Angela Freeland (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) saw action in the first half only for the Blue Jays and made three saves, before giving way to first-year student Kristen Kelly (Bensalem, PA/Villa Joseph Marie), who made one stop in the second half and was credited with the victory. Mayo, who had given the Hawks (1-0-0 overall) a 1-0 lead early in the second half, took a through pass from Amanda daCunha and fired home the winning goal after the Blue Jays (0-1-0 overall) had tied the game with 1:08 left in regulation on a penalty kick by junior Carly Hoskins (Bangor, PA/Bangor). After a scoreless first half, Mayo scored with 34:44 left in the second half to give Roger Williams a 1-0 lead. The Blue Jays applied tremendous pressure on the Hawk defense from there, finally breaking through on the penalty kick by Hoskins which was awarded after senior Jenny Fromuth (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) was brought down in the box by Roger Williams keeper Jen Garside. The Blue Jays, who are the defending Commonwealth Conference champions, picked up one first-place vote and 27 points to rank second behind Messiah College, which earned the other five first-place votes and 31 total points to take the top spot in the poll. Widener University was third with 21 points, followed by Albright College in fourth (19 points), Lebanon Valley College in fifth (17 points) and conference newcomer Lycoming College in sixth (11 points). Elizabethtown finished with a 14-5-3 record in 2006 and won the school’s first conference title since 1999. The Blue Jays also advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time since 1997. Head coach Barry Dohner, who begins his 14th season on the Blue Jay bench with 172 victories, is the two-time reigning Commonwealth Conference Coach of the Year as well as last year’s Middle Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. The Blue Jays received 140 points in the survey, which is voted upon by a panel of 23 coaches and sports information directors from across the country along with the co-creators of the site. Elizabethtown was ranked 18 th in the final poll of the 2006 season. Elizabethtown finished with a 14-5-3 record and won the Commonwealth Conference postseason championship in 2006, the school’s first conference title since 1999. The Blue Jays also advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time since 1997.
