Junior Matt Diller (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) and senior George Severini (Havertown, PA/Haverford) added goals for the Blue Jays (14-5 overall), who advanced to their fifth consecutive Commonwealth Conference championship match on Saturday against Messiah College, a 4-0 winner over Albright College in Wednesday's other semifinal game. Elizabethtown took a 1-0 lead just 2:42 into the contest as Diller scored his 11th goal of the season off assists by Bunting and senior Mike Helsel (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra). Bunting tallied his second goal of the year at 38:05 as he converted following a throw-in by first-year student Tony Pacella (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead entering halftime. In the second half, Severini closed out the scoring at 78:53 with his team-best 15th goal of the season on an assist by senior Brian Raveling (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional). The Blue Jays were outshot by the Warriors (13-5-1 overall) 15-11 while Lycoming also held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Junior Jeff Mullen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) earned his ninth shutout of the season by making nine saves for the Blue Jays, while Ryan Humphreys tallied five stops for the Warriors. In men's soccer, the third-seeded Blue Jays (13-5 overall, 3-2 Commonwealth) will travel to second-seeded Lycoming College (13-4-1 overall, 3-2 Commonwealth) for a 3:00 p.m. match while the third-seeded field hockey squad (11-7 overall, 2-2 Commonwealth) will play at second-seeded Messiah College (14-4 overall, 3-1 Commonwealth) at 4:00 p.m. The men's soccer team won two road matches to capture the Commonwealth Conference championship last season, earning shutout wins at Messiah (1-0) and former conference member Susquehanna University (2-0). Lycoming earned the second seed in the tournament by virtue of their 2-1 win over Elizabethtown at home on Oct. 17. The Warriors have won five of their last six matches entering the postseason, while the Blue Jays have split their last six contests after opening the season with a 10-2 record. The winner of Wednesday's match will face the winner of the other semifinal between top-seeded Messiah and fourth-seeded Albright College on Saturday in the conference championship match, with the winner gaining an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. The field hockey squad has played a challenging schedule, with six of their seven losses coming to teams ranked in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III Top 20 at some point during the season, including five to currently-ranked teams. In their regular-season meeting with Messiah, the Blue Jays fell 3-2 in overtime at home. The Falcons have won four straight matches and are currently ranked 10th in the NFHCA Division III poll. Wednesday's winner will play on Saturday at top-seeded Lebanon Valley in the Commonwealth Conference title match, with the champion earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Back to top 10/29/2007 Blue Jays fall to Messiah 3-0 in regular-season finale ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S SOCCER Monday, October 29, 2007 Messiah Captures Top Seed in Commonwealth Playoffs With 3-0 Win at Elizabethtown ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Visiting Messiah College scored three goals in a span of 3 minutes, 46 seconds spanning the halves to capture a 3-0 victory over Elizabethtown College in Commonwealth Conference men's soccer action at Ira R. Herr Field on Monday afternoon. Matt Dorsey and Mike Rinker scored in the final two minutes of the first half while Patrick Lenehan tallied in the first two minutes of the second half as the fourth-ranked Falcons (17-2 overall, 5-0 Commonwealth) secured the top seed in the conference playoffs, which begin Wednesday. Messiah will host Albright in one semifinal match at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, while the defending champion Blue Jays (13-5 overall, 3-2 Commonwealth) will travel to Lycoming for a 3:00 p.m. match. The winners will meet Saturday for the conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. Messiah tallied the game's first goal with 1:54 left in the first half as Dorsey took a short pass from Eric Frey and netted his third goal of the season. The Falcons extended their lead to 2-0 with just 2.3 seconds left in the half as Rinker tipped a pass from Sean Cunningham into the Blue Jay net for his sixth goal of the year. Raveling scored two goals and added an assist as the Blue Jays defeated 2006 NCAA Division III finalist Wheaton (Ill.) College 5-2 in their only game of the week last Monday. He opened the scoring at 4:31 and capped a four-goal Blue Jay run with his second goal of the evening at 74:15. For the season, Raveling has four goals and three assists for 11 points for the Blue Jays, who open Commonwealth Conference playoff action on Wednesday. Back to top 10/25/2007 Etown set to host Messiah on Saturday FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown to Host Messiah in Men's Soccer Showdown ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team will host archrival Messiah College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Ira R. Herr Field. The Blue Jays (13-4 overall, 3-1 Commonwealth) carry a 13-game home winning streak into the match against the Falcons (15-2 overall, 4-0 Commonwealth), who have won each of the last three NCAA Division III championships. Messiah, ranked fourth in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III poll, holds a 23-17-2 edge in the all-time series, which began in 1980 and has evolved into one of the fiercest rivalries in the nation. The Falcons have not lost at Elizabethtown since 1994, winning six and tying one over that span. Elizabethtown won the most recent meeting between the squads, posting a 1-0 win at Messiah in the Commonwealth Conference semifinals last Oct. 31 on a goal by Michael Terry in the fifth minute. The winner of Saturday's match will earn the top seed in next week's Commonwealth Conference playoffs. The Blue Jays and Falcons have combined to win 15 of the last 16 conference championships. Herr Field.
Raveling scored in the fifth minute to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead and capped a four-goal second-half outburst with a rebound goal at 74:15 as the Blue Jays (13-4-0 overall) improved to 10-0 at home this season and won their 13th straight game at Ira R. Herr Field dating to last season. Seniors George Severini (Havertown, PA/Haverford) and Mike Helsel (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) each scored a goal and added an assist for the Blue Jays on Senior Night, while junior Matt Diller (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) added his 10th goal of the season against the Thunder, who were NCAA Division III finalists last year. The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead just 4:31 into the contest as Raveling headed home a cross by senior Josh Hoffman (Schaefferstown, PA/ELCO), but the Thunder (10-4-1 overall) tied the score at 1-1 as Jason VanderVeen scored the first of his two goals off an assist by Cory Smith at 6:22. In the second half, Elizabethtown struck just 1:47 into the half as Severini scored his conference-leading 14th goal of the season as he was surrounded by four defenders but still managed to drill a shot to the far corner, with an assist to senior Michael Terry (Beech Creek, PA/Central Mountain). Diller extended the Elizabethtown lead to 3-1 at 68:22 as a corner kick by Helsel was played off the head of junior Wes Bunting (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) to Diller, who rifled home the goal. The Blue Jays struck again at 71:55 as Raveling played the rebound of his shot back to Helsel, whose long strike from 25 yards out found net for his second goal of the year. Raveling capped the scoring for Elizabethtown at 74:15 as he scored off the rebound of a shot by Severini, and VanderVeen added his second of the match with 5:24 left off assists by Dolph Westlund and Joel DeLass. Elizabethtown finished with a 12-10 edge in shots over Wheaton and held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. The contest was a physical affair, with the squads combining for 49 fouls and four yellow cards. Herr Field on Saturday afternoon.
With a large Homecoming crowd looking on, Severini scored at 35:39 and 40:00 for his fourth two-goal game of the season, while increasing his conference-leading goal total to 13 for the Blue Jays (12-4-0 overall, 3-1-0 Commonwealth). Severini scored his first goal at 35:49 on a penalty kick after he was fouled in the box, and added his second tally of the day at 40:00 as he deflected home a shot by junior Dan Flaherty (West Chester, PA/Henderson). The Blue Jays outshot the Pride (7-9-0 overall, 1-2-0 Commonwealth) 12-7 and finished with an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks. Junior Jeff Mullen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) posted his eighth shutout of the season by making three saves for the Blue Jays, while Marty Squicciarini made three stops for Widener.

Trailing 1-0, Tanner tied the game with 13:44 left and Pusateri followed with the game-winner with 10:55 to go as the Warriors (11-3-1 overall, 1-1 Commonwealth) defeated the Blue Jays (11-4-0 overall, 2-1 Commonwealth) for the second straight year.

In a match delayed nearly two hours due to rain and lightning, Corday scored his ninth goal of the season on a direct kick to give the Diplomats (13-0-0 overall) just their fifth win over the Blue Jays (10-3-0 overall) in 30 Bronze Boot matches since 1978. The Diplomats finished with a 12-2 edge in shots and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks over the Blue Jays in the contest. Junior Jeff Mullen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) finished with two saves in goal for Elizabethtown, while Zack Zamek did not make any saves for Franklin & Marshall. The Bronze Boot is a soccer shoe originally worn by Al Hershey β64, who was a two-time All-American at Elizabethtown (1962 and 1963), and he later coached at both Elizabethtown and Franklin & Marshall. The Boot is named for Robert Smith, who coached F&M from 1947 to 1963, and for Ira R. Herr, who coached Etown from 1938 to 1948 and from 1958 to 1960. Established in 1978, the purpose of the trophy is βto memorialize the two men who did so much for soccer at their respective schools.β Elizabethtown and Franklin & Marshall are the two NCAA Division III member colleges in Lancaster County, Pa. Elizabethtown regained possession of the boot last season with a 2-1 win over Franklin & Marshall. Since the Smith-Herr Bronze Boot was created in 1978, Elizabethtown has led the series 22-5-3. All-time, Elizabethtown leads the series between the teams 25-7-3. Ironically, Smith and Herr never coached against one another in soccer. Herr Field on Saturday afternoon. Terry scored his fourth goal of the season off a crossing pass by senior Mike Helsel (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) at 22:56, and the Blue Jay defense stood tall the rest of the way in recording their fourth consecutive shutout victory. The Blue Jays (10-2-0 overall) also improved to 8-0 at home with the win and won their 11th consecutive home match dating to last season. Elizabethtown finished with an 11-4 advantage in shots over the Pioneers (7-6-0 overall) and took two corner kicks to one by William Paterson. Senior George Severini (Havertown, PA/Haverford) continued his scoring outburst with his team-high 10th goal of the season just three minutes into the contest, while junior Matt Diller (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) added his seventh goal less than seven minutes later for the Blue Jays (9-2-0 overall). Severini has scored five goals in the last three matches for the Blue Jays, who have won nine of their last 10 contests. His goal came at 2:44 off an assist by senior Mike Helsel (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra), while Diller scored unassisted off a turnover at 9:30 to extend the Etown lead to 2-0.
