Back to top 10/18/2007 Blue Jays to compete at MASCAC Individual Championships FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown to Compete at MASCAC Women's Tennis Individual Championships ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team will be in action this weekend at the 2007 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Individual Championships at the Hempfield Sports Complex in Landisville. Action at the two-day tournament begins Saturday morning and concludes on Sunday with semifinals and finals in each of six singles flights and three doubles flights. Elizabethtown has five singles entries and two doubles teams entered in the tournament. In singles, sophomore Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) will compete at flight one after finishing with a 5-2 record during the fall portion of the season. Swarr, who was honored as Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year after finishing 4-0 in conference action, was the MASCAC runner-up at flight three last season. At flight two will be senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown), who was also a first-team All-Conference selection along with Swarr after she finished 3-4 in singles this fall and 3-1 in conference matches. Smith was the MASCAC runner-up at flight two last season after advancing to the semifinals in her first year and has 32 singles victories in her career. Junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) will play at flight three after finishing 5-2 during the fall season and earning second-team All-Conference recognition as she went 4-0 in conference matches and lost a total of one game. Yu, who competed at flight four in each of the last two years, advanced to the MASCAC semifinals last season and was a quarterfinalist in her first year. Sophomore Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) will play at flight four after going a perfect 4-0 in singles during the fall season. Russell, who has a career 10-3 record in singles play, was a quarterfinalist at flight six last season. Sophomore Kelly Wall (Washington, PA/Washington) will make her MASCAC debut at flight six after finishing 2-0 during the fall season in the first singles action of her career. In doubles, Smith and Yu will play at flight one after finishing with a 4-3 record during the season. Both players won MASCAC doubles championships last year, as Smith teamed with Stacy Shapiro at flight one and Yu partnered with Swarr at flight two. At flight two, Swarr and Russell will compete after going a perfect 4-0 during the fall season. As mentioned, Swarr was the MASCAC champion at flight two as Yu's partner last season while Russell played at flight three along with Heather Lander and finished as runner-up. Back to top 10/17/2007 Three Blue Jays named All-Conference FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Three Elizabethtown Players Named All-Commonwealth Conference; Emily Swarr Selected Player of the Year and Matt Helsel Repeats as Coach of the Year ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Three Elizabethtown College women's tennis players have been named All-Commonwealth Conference as voted upon by the league's head coaches and released Wednesday. Sophomore Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) was named Player of the Year and selected to the first team along with senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown), while junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) was a second-team selection. In addition, head coach Matt Helsel was named Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season and the third time in his career after guiding the Blue Jays to a perfect 4-0 record in conference play and the top seed in next spring's team tournament. Swarr, who was conference Rookie of the Year last season, compiled a 5-2 record in singles during the fall portion of the season and went 4-0 at first singles in conference play. She lost just one set in four league matches and increased her two-year singles record to 20-10. Smith, who was a second-team All-Conference selection as a freshman and a sophomore, fashioned a 3-4 overall record and went 3-1 at second singles in conference matches, boosting her career win total in singles to 32. Yu is a first-time All-Conference pick after dominating at third singles during conference play, compiling a perfect 4-0 record and losing a total of one game in eight sets. In her career, Yu has 40 singles victories to rank sixth on the school's all-time wins list. Helsel was the Commonwealth Conference Coach of the Year for women's tennis in 2004 and 2006, and also earned Coach of the Year honors in men's tennis in 2005. He holds a 64-20 record in six seasons as head coach and has had nine different players earn All-Conference honors a total of 16 times during his tenure with the Blue Jays. Earning singles victories for the Blue Jays (4-1 overall) over the Bulldogs (9-3 overall) were junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central), who was a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 winner at flight three over Kate Steiner, and first-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands), who won 6-1, 6-0 over MaryKate Boylan at fifth singles. In doubles, sophomores Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) teamed for an 8-3 win over Liz Guidon and Smith at flight two. The Blue Jays (4-0 overall, 4-0 Commonwealth) will have the top seed in the Commonwealth Conference team tournament next April, with the winning team earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Elizabethtown won five of six singles matches against the Falcons (5-6 overall, 2-2 Commonwealth), as sophomore Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) defeated Sadie Sumner 6-4, 6-3 at flight one, senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Leah Bradshaw at flight two, and junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) won 6-0, 6-0 over Stacey Clark at flight three. Stacey Clark/Laura Miller (MESS), 8-6 Back to top 10/5/2007 Etown defeats Lebanon Valley in resumption of suspended match, 5-4 ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S TENNIS Elizabethtown Defeats Lebanon Valley 5-4 in Completion of September 20 match ANNVILLE, Pa. --- In a completion of a match from Sept. 20, the Elizabethtown College women's tennis team held on for a 5-4 victory over Lebanon Valley College in Commonwealth Conference action on Friday afternoon. The Blue Jays (3-0 overall, 3-0 Commonwealth) led 4-3 over the Dutchmen (7-2 overall, 3-1 Commonwealth) when the match was halted due to darkness 15 days earlier. First-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands) provided the winning margin as she finished off a 7-6, 2-6, 7-5 win at fourth singles over Charissa Nordall. Senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) also completed her match at second singles and lost to Leslie Sabas 7-6, 3-6, 6-3. In singles, sophomore Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Amiee Snyder at flight one, senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) won 6-0, 6-1 at flight two over Rebecca Reynolds , and junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Erika Niemann at flight three.
