ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Senior Mike Schatzmann (Paradise, PA/Pequea Valley) scored all of his game-high 23 points in the final 15 minutes of regulation while playing with four fouls as Elizabethtown College rallied from a 12-point deficit to stun the University of Scranton 73-71 in non-conference men's basketball action at Thompson Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Schatzmann, who played just four minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, hit a career-high six three-pointers in seven attempts as the Blue Jays (5-0 overall) continued their best start since the 1996-97 season and handed the Royals (4-1 overall) their first loss of the year.

Senior Chad Piersol (Elverson, PA/Owen J. Roberts) hit the go-ahead jumper with 19 seconds left for the Blue Jays, who trailed 45-33 with 15:34 remaining and 64-53 with 6:56 left before storming back behind the long-range shooting of Schatzmann, who canned back-to-back three-pointers to give Elizabethtown a 70-68 lead with 58 seconds to play.

However, Scranton's Randy Arnold answered with a three-pointer of his own to give the Royals a 71-70 lead with 44 seconds left. Piersol then nailed a jumper from the foul line to push Etown back ahead 72-71 with 19 seconds left, and an offensive foul gave the Jays the ball back with 4.2 seconds remaining.

Schatzmann made a foul shot with 3.5 seconds left to extend the Blue Jay lead to 73-71, and after missing the second shot stole the outlet pass as time expired to seal the victory.

Elizabethtown overcame 30.6 percent shooting in the first half by hitting 68.2 percent (15-for-22) in the second half, including 6-for-10 from three-point range, to finish at 44.8 percent for the contest. Piersol added 19 points for the Blue Jays while senior Bryce Rodgers (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) came off the bench to add 11 points and a career-high eight rebounds.

Scranton was led by Zach Ashworth, who came off the bench with hot shooting of his own as he went 4-for-6 from three-point range and finished with 16 points. Tom Bicknell added 14 points and eight rebounds while Arnold chipped in with 13 points and five steals.

The Royals led 31-28 at halftime thanks to a late 9-2 run, and burst out to a 45-33 lead on a jumper by Arnold with 15:34 left. Schatzmann, who picked up his fourth foul with 16:13 left, then nailed three straight three-pointers as part of a 12-4 run that brought the Blue Jays within 47-44 with 13:29 to go.

However, Ashworth answered with four consecutive three-pointers, the latter coming with 8:00 left to give the Royals a 62-51 advantage. From there, it was all Schatzmann and Piersol as the duo combined for the Blue Jays' final 18 points over the last 6:30 of the contest.

Junior Phil Schaffer (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) dished out a career-best 10 assists for the Blue Jays while adding four points and four rebounds.

Kelly Downs Selected College Division Academic All-American of the Year in Volleyball; First Elizabethtown Athlete to Earn Prestigious Honor

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College senior middle hitter Kelly Downs (Airville, PA/Red Lion) has been named the 2007 ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-American of the Year in volleyball, as voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and released Wednesday.

Downs is the first Elizabethtown student-athlete to earn the prestigious Academic All-American of the Year honor, which goes to the highest vote-getter among candidates for the Academic All-America team. She is also the first Blue Jay to be named first-team Academic All-America since Mandi (Ewing) Romig '01 was selected to the women's at-large team in 2001 and the ninth overall.

A second-team Academic All-American in 2006, Downs joins Duane Snavely '85 (men's soccer), Gary Yeager '95 (baseball) and Megan Halladay '04 (women's soccer) as two-time Academic All-America selections.

Downs was an honorable mention All-America selection by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), a member of the AVCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region team and the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year as well as a first-team Academic All-District selection.

She finished the season with a school-record 511 kills and led the conference in kills, hitting percentage (.378) and blocks (181). A four-time All-Conference selection, she finished her career as Elizabethtown's all-time leader with 1,532 kills and 585 blocks.

Downs reached double figures in kills in 31 of 39 matches this season and hit better than .500 in a total of 11 matches as the Blue Jays (32-7 overall) won the first conference championship in program history and qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time since 1986.

Off the court, Downs has a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade-point average as an occupational therapy major with a minor in human services. She has been named to the Dean's List every semester, is a Presidential Scholarship recipient and is a member of the Pi Theta Epsilon occupational therapy honor society.

Downs is treasurer of Best Buddies, a student-directed learning community that mentors local residents with intellectual disabilities, and organized a Halloween dance for Special Olympics members. She is also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

To be nominated for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be of at least sophomore academic standing with a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or significant reserve. College Division classification includes all non-NCAA Division I colleges and universities.

2007-08 season preview available

2007-08 Men's Basketball Preview

After an uncharacteristic 9-15 season in 2006-07, the Elizabethtown College men's basketball team is fully prepared to return to its usual spot near the top of the Commonwealth Conference standings in 2007-08.

The Blue Jays return two full-time starters and a part-time starter from last year's squad, but intend to rely on a core of senior leadership combined with several up-and-coming prospects to challenge for one of four postseason berths in the six-team league.

Head coach Bob Schlosser begins his 18th season on the Elizabethtown bench with 264 career victories, and has a total of eight letterwinners among the 13 players who will suit up when the Blue Jays host Penn State Berks in the season-opening Days Inn East Blue Jay Classic on Friday, Nov. 16 at Thompson Gymnasium.

Offensively, senior guard Mike Schatzmann (Paradise, PA/Pequea Valley) was the team's leading scorer last season at 11.0 points per game, while connecting on 33 three-pointers and sharing the team lead with 3.9 rebounds per contest.

Senior swingman Chad Piersol (Elverson, PA/Owen J. Roberts) started 15 games last season and averaged 9.6 points per contest while hitting 24 three-pointers, and senior forward Bryce Rodgers (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) added 4.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game while starting exactly half of the Blue Jays' 24 contests.

Sophomore post player Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) is expected to be a factor in the paint for Elizabethtown, after averaging 4.7 points and 3.0 rebounds in 21 games as a reserve last season.

Junior guard Phil Schaffer (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) will step into the starting point guard spot after averaging 2.1 points and 1.4 assists per game last year.

Off the bench, sophomore forward Josh Houseal (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) will play a regular role after scoring nine points and grabbing six rebounds in limited action last season. Senior guard Ben Schlosser (Elizabethtown, PA/Lancaster Catholic) and senior forward Nick Kennedy (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) will also see increased minutes this year off the Blue Jay bench.

Also providing depth off the bench are senior forward Jordan Dirago (Wallkill, NY/Wallkill) and a pair of newcomers at guard in junior Matt Stein (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) and first-year student Keith Fogel (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg). Fogel scored 1,572 points during his scholastic career and was a three-time All-Conference selection.

Sophomore guard Chris Jones (Airville, PA/Kennard-Dale) and first-year guard Joe Flanagan (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) will also compete for minutes off the bench for the Blue Jays.

2007-08 Season Preview Available

2007-08 Women's Basketball Preview

The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team has all the pieces in place to be a factor in the Commonwealth Conference during the 2007-08 season, which tips off on Saturday, Nov. 17 when the Blue Jays face FDU-Florham at Johns Hopkins University.

The Blue Jays, who finished 13-11 overall and 5-9 in the conference a year ago, return all five starters and nine of the 12 members of last season's squad, which was eliminated from postseason contention on the final day of the season.

Head coach Yvonne Kauffman begins her 38th season on the Blue Jay bench with 629 victories to rank third all-time among NCAA Division III coaches and 20th overall among coaches at all three levels of the NCAA.

Aiding in the Blue Jays' efforts toward a playoff berth is the realignment of the Commonwealth Conference, which saw the league reduced from eight to six teams following the departure of Juniata College, Moravian College and Susquehanna University and the arrival of Lycoming College.

The other item of interest for Blue Jay fans will be following senior guard Erin Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington County) as she chases the career point record at Elizabethtown.

Walton enters her senior season with 1,293 points to rank 11th in program history, just 464 points behind the 1,757 points scored by All-American Page Lutz '84. Last season, Walton scored 501 points and averaged a conference-best 20.9 points per game for the Blue Jays en route to earning first-team All-Conference honors.

She scored in double figures in all but one game last year, and surpassed the 20-point mark 13 times including five 30-point efforts. Walton also shot 86 percent (111-for-129) from the foul line including a 16-for-16 effort in a win over Susquehanna.

Senior center Audrey Hitz (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona) is a factor in the post for the Blue Jays, after averaging 8.8 points and leading the Commonwealth Conference with 10.5 rebounds per contest. She recorded six double-doubles last year, and pulled at least 10 boards in 14 contests including a 19-rebound effort against Widener University.

Senior Amanda Reid (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) added 5.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game from her power forward spot, while junior Jenn Montague (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) started 11 games in the frontcourt and finished with 5.3 points and 4.3 boards per contest.

In the backcourt, junior Megan Quinn (Millersville, PA/Penn Manor) averaged 10.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game for the Blue Jays. A starter in 13 of the team's 24 games, Quinn averaged 11.8 points per game as a starter and 9.4 per game off the bench.

Quinn also led the Blue Jays with 35 three-pointers and 36 steals, while averaging 82.4 percent (42-for-51) from the foul line. She scored in double figures 14 times last year, including a 21-point effort against Trinity College.

Junior guard Megan Romano (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) started every game at the point and led the Blue Jays with 91 assists (3.8 per game) while averaging 4.9 points per game.

Off the bench, sophomore guard Courtney Kofeldt (Coatesville, PA/Holy Spirit, NJ) is a three-point threat after connecting on 21 threes last season. Sophomore guard Ashley Toczylowski (Dupont, PA/Wyoming Seminary) and sophomore forward Ali Jury (Halifax, PA/Halifax) also saw regular action off the Blue Jay bench a year ago.

A trio of first-year players will look to make an impact on the program: guards Gabrielle Whitley (Lititz, PA/Warwick) and Kirsti Larsen (Carlisle, PA/Boiling Springs) and forward Kaity Snyder (Catawissa, PA/Southern Columbia).

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team has been picked to finish third in the Commonwealth Conference, as voted upon by the league's six head coaches and released Tuesday.

The Blue Jays return all five starters from last year's squad, which finished 13-11 overall and 5-9 in the conference under head coach Yvonne Kauffman, who begins her 38th season on the Elizabethtown sidelines with 629 career victories.

Senior guard Erin Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) was a first-team All-Conference selection last year as she led the league in scoring at 20.9 points per game, while senior center Audrey Hitz (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona) paced the conference in rebounding with 10.5 boards per contest.

Three-time defending conference champion Messiah College received four first-place votes and 25 points to take the top spot in the poll, followed by Albright College (21 points, one first-place vote), Elizabethtown (14 points), Widener University (12 points), Lebanon Valley College (10 points) and Lycoming College (8 points).

Kelly Downs Named Academic All-District in Volleyball

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College senior middle hitter Kelly Downs (Airville, PA/Red Lion) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team in volleyball, as voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and released Thursday.

Downs, a second-team Academic All-American in 2006, is a repeat selection to the District 2 College Division first team and carries a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade-point average as an occupational therapy major with a minor in human services.

Downs became the first Elizabethtown player to earn Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year honors after leading the league in kills per game (3.81), blocks per game (1.30) and hitting percentage (.388) and has set a single-season program record with 491 kills.

She has reached double figures in kills in 30 of 37 matches this season and hit better than .500 in a total of 11 matches as the Blue Jays (31-6 overall) won the first conference championship in program history and qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time since 1986.

A four-time All-Conference selection, she is the program's career leader with 1,512 kills and is tied for the school record of 572 blocks originally set by Nancy (Dunmyer) Brady '91 from 1987 to 1990.

Off the court, Downs has been named to the Dean's List every semester, is a Presidential Scholarship recipient and is a member of the Pi Theta Epsilon occupational therapy honor society.

Downs is treasurer of Best Buddies, a student-directed learning community that mentors local residents with intellectual disabilities, and organized a Halloween dance for Special Olympics members. She is also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

CoSIDA District 2's College Division consists of all non-NCAA Division I colleges and universities in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

To be nominated for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be of at least sophomore academic standing with a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or significant reserve.

Thursday, November 8, 2007

Seven Named to All-Commonwealth Conference Team; Jenna Russo Selected Player of the Year

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Junior forward Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) was named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year in women's soccer to lead a group of seven Elizabethtown College players earning All-Conference honors, as voted upon by the league's six head coaches and released Thursday.

Senior midfielder Jenny Fromuth (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) and senior defender Jamie Alvanitakis (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) joined Russo on the first time, while junior forward Brooke Dotterer (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts), sophomore midfielder Erin Scott (West Chester, PA/Bishop Shanahan), senior defender Emily Gunter (Hockessin, DE/A.I. duPont) and junior defender Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) were second-team choices.

The Blue Jays carry a 17-3-1 overall record into the NCAA Division III tournament, where they will play Union College in a first-round match on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at William Smith College.

Russo was named to the first team for the second straight season after being a second-team selection in 2005. She led the Blue Jays with 10 goals and nine assists for 29 points in 19 matches, scored at least one point in nine straight matches from Sept. 20 through Oct. 16 and registered at least one point in 15 matches this year.

She is the first Blue Jay to earn conference Player of the Year honors since Dina Jingoli shared the award in 2000, and the first outright Player of the Year since Meredith Uber was honored in 1999.

Fromuth, also a repeat selection to the first team, tallied seven goals and six assists while starting all 21 matches. Three of her goals were game-winners in 1-0 victories for the Blue Jays.

Alvanitakis was a second-team pick last season, and picked up four assists while starting every game at right back. Three of her assists came on game-winning goals for the Blue Jays.

Dotterer is a second-team selection after earning first-team honors in each of her first two years. She scored 10 goals, including five game-winners, and added seven assists for 27 points. Her hat trick gave the Blue Jays a 3-2 overtime win at Lebanon Valley on Oct. 13.
