Back to top 11/7/2007 Eight Blue Jays named to All-Conference team; Filewicz - Rookie of the Year FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown Places Eight on All-Commonwealth Conference Men's Soccer Team ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Eight Elizabethtown men's soccer players have been named All-Commonwealth Conference as voted upon by the league's six head coaches and released Wednesday. Earning first-team honors were senior forward George Severini (Havertown, PA/Haverford), senior midfielder Michael Terry (Beech Creek, PA/Central Mountain) and junior defender Wes Bunting (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey). On the second team were first-year forward Andrew Filewicz (Wenonah, NJ/Northeast Catholic), junior forward Matt Diller (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersberg Academy), junior midfielder Bryan Holt (Hershey, PA/Lower Dauphin), senior midfielder Mike Helsel (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) and senior defender Zach Galbraith (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley). Filewicz was also honored as the conference's Rookie of the Year for the Blue Jays, whose eight All-Conference picks are the most since having eight selections in 1998. The Blue Jays finished 14-6-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the Commonwealth Conference under 25th-year head coach Skip Roderick, advancing to the conference finals for the fifth consecutive season before falling to Messiah College 1-0. Severini leads the Commonwealth Conference with 15 goals and ranks second with 32 points. He posted four two-goal games and scored four game-winning goals for the Blue Jays. Terry is a repeat first-team selection and is All-Conference for the third time in his career. He scored four goals and added an assist for nine points while regularly playing all 90 minutes at his center midfield position. Bunting is also a repeat selection to the first team after starting all 20 games at center back and scoring two goals and four assists for eight points. Filewicz scored a pair of goals and tied for the team lead with seven assists for a total of nine points on the year. He is the first Blue Jay to earn Rookie of the Year honors since Brennan Reichenbach shared the award in 2003. Diller scored 11 goals, including five game-winners, and added four assists for 26 points. Through the end of the conference playoffs, he ranked third in the Commonwealth Conference in both goals and points. Holt started all 20 games at center midfield and finished with a goal and two assists for four points. His goal was a game-winner in a 1-0 win over Drew University on Sept. 13. Helsel finished with two goals and seven assists for 11 points while playing all 20 games for the Blue Jays. He scored in a 4-2 win over Hampden-Sydney College on Sept. 8 and against Wheaton College in a 5-2 victory on Oct. 22. Galbraith started 19 games at right back and finished with three assists while helping the Blue Jay defense limit opponents to 16 goals in 20 matches while recording 10 shutouts. Messiah's Kai Kasiguran was named Player of the Year while Scott Kennell of Lycoming College was selected Coach of the Year. The Falcons (18-2-0 overall), the three-time defending NCAA Division III champions, won their ninth conference championship and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, while the Blue Jays (14-6-0 overall) will learn Sunday evening if they will receive an at-large bid. Kasiguran, who was named tournament Most Valuable Player, gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead with a blast from 25 yards out with just over 20 minutes remaining on the clock. The Blue Jays were outshot by a slight 14-11 margin by the Falcons, while Messiah took six corner kicks to three by Elizabethtown. Junior Jeff Mullen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) tallied five saves in goal for Elizabethtown while Jared Clugston made five stops for Messiah. Elizabethtown (14-6-0) vs. Messiah (18-2-0) Shots: Elizabethtown 11, Messiah 14 Back to top 11/1/2007 Jeff Mullen and Matt Diller named second-team Academic All-District FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Jeff Mullen and Matt Diller Named Second-Team Academic All-District in Men's Soccer ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College juniors Jeff Mullen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) and Matt Diller (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) have been named to the ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District Second Team in men's soccer, as voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Mullen, a goalkeeper, is majoring in management and has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.67. In 18 games this season, he has compiled a 14-4 record with nine shutouts. Mullen ranks second in the Commonwealth Conference in both goals against average (0.72) and save percentage (.803). In the classroom, Mullen has made the Dean's List all six semesters, and has participated in the Hershey Foods Honors Program. He is a member of the Academic Integrity Committee and is a recipient of a Provost Scholarship. Diller, a forward, is majoring in business and has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.36. He ranks third in the Commonwealth Conference in both goals (11) and points (26) for the Blue Jays while appearing in all 19 matches. Off the field, Diller has a concentration in entrepreneurship at Elizabethtown and is the manager of the Handcrafted Stone division of Nitterhouse Masonry Products in Chambersburg. To be nominated for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be of at least sophomore academic standing with a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or significant reserve. Back to top 11/1/2007 Blue Jays to play at Messiah on Saturday at 1pm in Commonwealth Finals FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Three Elizabethtown College Teams to Play for Commonwealth Conference Championships ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Three Elizabethtown College teams will compete for Commonwealth Conference championships on Saturday, as men's soccer and women's soccer will play at Messiah College and volleyball will host Lebanon Valley College. Men's soccer (14-5-0 overall) will play at Messiah at 1:00 p.m. in search of their second consecutive Commonwealth title. The Blue Jays, who are making their fifth straight appearance in the championship match, defeated Lycoming College 3-0 in semifinal action on Wednesday. Volleyball (30-6 overall) hosts Lebanon Valley at 2:00 p.m. looking for its first-ever conference championship in its fourth trip to the finals. The Blue Jays defeated Widener University 3-0 in the semifinals on Wednesday night to advance to the championship for the second straight year. Women's soccer (17-2-1 overall) plays at Messiah at 6:00 p.m. in a rematch of last year's title match, which the Blue Jays won by a 1-0 score. Elizabethtown earned its sixth trip to the league finals with a 3-1 win over Widener in the semifinals on Tuesday. Admission to all conference postseason events is $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for seniors and $2.00 for students while children under age 6 are admitted free. Each winner of Saturday's events is guaranteed a berth in next week's NCAA Division III playoffs. |
