Back to top 11/20/2007 Blue Jays rout Swarthmore 84-51 as Walton scores game-high 26 points ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Elizabethtown Picks Up Second Straight Win With 84-51 Victory at Swarthmore SWARTHMORE, Pa. --- Senior Erin Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington County) scored 26 points to move into fifth place on the school career scoring list as Elizabethtown College routed Swarthmore College 84-51 in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday night. Walton added eight rebounds and three steals in just 25 minutes of action as the Blue Jays (2-1 overall) went on a 45-15 run in the second half to turn a 10-point lead into a 40-point advantage. With her 26-point effort, Walton increased her career point total to 1,370, surpassing Marci Grossman '93 (1,365 points), Nancy Keene '89 (1,364 points) and Michelle Swatner '88 (1,362 points) for fifth place in program history. She is 388 points shy of passing Page Lutz '84 (1,757 points) to become the all-time leading scorer at Elizabethtown. Junior Megan Quinn (Millersville, PA/Penn Manor) also reached double figures for the Blue Jays with 10 points, while the Elizabethtown defense limited the Garnet (1-2 overall) to just 33.3 percent shooting from the field. Kathryn Stockbower led Swarthmore with 16 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots while Caylan Bodur added 13 points and Karen Berk chipped in with eight points and 10 rebounds. Neither team led by more than three points for the first 11 minutes of the game, but the Blue Jays scored the final seven points of first half to take a 32-22 lead to halftime Elizabethtown held a 46-33 lead with 14:39 to play after a basket by Bodur, but the Garnet would not score another field goal until 5:03 remained as the Blue Jays went on a 29-7 run to take a 72-40 lead. The Blue Jays finished with a 56-40 edge in rebounding, led by 11 boards from first-year student Kaity Snyder (Catawissa, PA/Southern Columbia) in 19 minutes off the bench. Walton was named to the All-Tournament team at the Mike Durgala Memorial Tournament at Johns Hopkins University after averaging 25.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in two games. She scored a game-high 27 points along with six rebounds in a 73-59 loss to FDU-Florham in Saturday's tournament opener, then tallied 24 points and four boards in an 86-71 win over Wesley on Sunday. In the process, Walton moved past the 1,300-point mark in career scoring and climbed into eighth place on the school career list with 1,344 points, just 22 points shy of moving into fifth place. The Blue Jays (1-1 overall) travel to Swarthmore College on Tuesday evening for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference. Back to top 11/18/2007 Blue Jays get career-high 27 points from Megan Quinn in 84-71 win vs Wesley ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Elizabethtown Defeats Wesley 84-71 in Consolation Game of Johns Hopkins Tournament BALTIMORE, Md. --- Junior Megan Quinn (Millersville, PA/Penn Manor) scored a career-high 27 points while senior Erin Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) added 24 points as Elizabethtown College defeated Wesley College 84-71 in the consolation game of the Mike Durgala Memorial Tournament at Johns Hopkins University on Sunday afternoon. Quinn shot 12-for-17 from the field and added seven rebounds and four steals for the Blue Jays (1-1 overall), who led 47-27 at halftime and by as many as 30 points in the second half over the Wolverines (0-2 overall). Senior Amanda Reid (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) added a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for Elizabethtown, which dominated Wesley on the boards by a 55-29 margin. Latasha Torres led Wesley with 19 points while Cory Boyd added 16 points and four steals, but the Wolverines committed 28 turnovers and shot 40.6 percent (28-for-69) from the field in the game. Elizabethtown stormed out to a 23-9 lead midway through the first half and took a 47-27 advantage to halftime behind 16 points by Quinn and 11 from Walton. The Blue Jays shot 58.1 percent (18-for-31) from the field in the first half while holding the Wolverines to just 34.4 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes. In the second half, the Blue Jays pushed their lead to 73-43 on a layup by Quinn with 11:56 to go, but the Wolverines went on a 15-0 run to trim the deficit to 73-58 on a layup by Torres with 6:42 left. Wesley would ultimately move within 12 at 79-67 on a three-pointer by Torres with 3:07 to play, but Walton connected on a layup and Quinn converted a three-point play to give Elizabethtown an 84-67 advantage with 2:41 left. Off the Elizabethtown bench, junior Jenn Montague (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) and first-year student Kirsti Larsen (Carlisle, PA/Boiling Springs) scored nine points apiece, with Montague adding nine rebounds in 24 minutes of playing time. Senior Erin Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington County) scored a game-high 27 points to move into eighth place on the Blue Jay career scoring list with 1,320 points, but Etown (0-1 overall) shot just 30 percent from the field including 1-for-18 from three-point range. The Blue Jays will play Wesley College in Sunday's consolation game at 1:00 p.m. after the Wolverines lost to host Johns Hopkins 79-65 in Saturday's other first-round contest. Walton, who entered the day ranked 11th in program history in scoring, moved past Sherri Kinsey '84 (1,310 points), Shauntae Stancil '99 (1,313 points) and Kim Boback '99 (1,320 points) on the career scoring list. The teams exchanged the lead several times in the early minutes of the game before the Devils (1-0 overall) went on a 14-4 run to take a 27-16 lead with 8:01 left in the first half on a three-pointer by Cerankowski. FDU-Florham led 35-28 at halftime, but the Blue Jays pulled within one at 37-36 on a foul shot by senior Audrey Hitz (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona) with 15:37 left. Etown moved back within a point at 49-48 on a basket by Walton with 7:05 to go and trailed 57-54 with 3:29 to play, but the Devils took command with an 11-1 run to go ahead 68-55 with 1:22 left. Daly went 7-for-8 from the foul line in the final two minutes, while the Devils as a team hit 11-of-14 at the stripe over the last 3:29 of the contest and went 23-for-31 overall in the game. Hitz joined Walton in double figures for the Blue Jays with 15 points and six rebounds, while senior Amanda Reid (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) added a team-high nine rebounds. The Blue Jays, who finished 13-11 overall and 5-9 in the conference a year ago, return all five starters and nine of the 12 members of last season's squad, which was eliminated from postseason contention on the final day of the season. Head coach Yvonne Kauffman begins her 38th season on the Blue Jay bench with 629 victories to rank third all-time among NCAA Division III coaches and 20th overall among coaches at all three levels of the NCAA. Aiding in the Blue Jays' efforts toward a playoff berth is the realignment of the Commonwealth Conference, which saw the league reduced from eight to six teams following the departure of Juniata College, Moravian College and Susquehanna University and the arrival of Lycoming College. The other item of interest for Blue Jay fans will be following senior guard Erin Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington County) as she chases the career point record at Elizabethtown. Walton enters her senior season with 1,293 points to rank 11th in program history, just 464 points behind the 1,757 points scored by All-American Page Lutz '84. Last season, Walton scored 501 points and averaged a conference-best 20.9 points per game for the Blue Jays en route to earning first-team All-Conference honors. She scored in double figures in all but one game last year, and surpassed the 20-point mark 13 times including five 30-point efforts. Walton also shot 86 percent (111-for-129) from the foul line including a 16-for-16 effort in a win over Susquehanna. Senior center Audrey Hitz (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona) is a factor in the post for the Blue Jays, after averaging 8.8 points and leading the Commonwealth Conference with 10.5 rebounds per contest. She recorded six double-doubles last year, and pulled at least 10 boards in 14 contests including a 19-rebound effort against Widener University. Senior Amanda Reid (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) added 5.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game from her power forward spot, while junior Jenn Montague (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) started 11 games in the frontcourt and finished with 5.3 points and 4.3 boards per contest. In the backcourt, junior Megan Quinn (Millersville, PA/Penn Manor) averaged 10.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game for the Blue Jays. A starter in 13 of the team's 24 games, Quinn averaged 11.8 points per game as a starter and 9.4 per game off the bench. Quinn also led the Blue Jays with 35 three-pointers and 36 steals, while averaging 82.4 percent (42-for-51) from the foul line. She scored in double figures 14 times last year, including a 21-point effort against Trinity College. Junior guard Megan Romano (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) started every game at the point and led the Blue Jays with 91 assists (3.8 per game) while averaging 4.9 points per game. Off the bench, sophomore guard Courtney Kofeldt (Coatesville, PA/Holy Spirit, NJ) is a three-point threat after connecting on 21 threes last season. Sophomore guard Ashley Toczylowski (Dupont, PA/Wyoming Seminary) and sophomore forward Ali Jury (Halifax, PA/Halifax) also saw regular action off the Blue Jay bench a year ago. A trio of first-year players will look to make an impact on the program: guards Gabrielle Whitley (Lititz, PA/Warwick) and Kirsti Larsen (Carlisle, PA/Boiling Springs) and forward Kaity Snyder (Catawissa, PA/Southern Columbia). The Blue Jays return all five starters from last year's squad, which finished 13-11 overall and 5-9 in the conference under head coach Yvonne Kauffman, who begins her 38th season on the Elizabethtown sidelines with 629 career victories. Senior guard Erin Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) was a first-team All-Conference selection last year as she led the league in scoring at 20.9 points per game, while senior center Audrey Hitz (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona) paced the conference in rebounding with 10.5 boards per contest. Three-time defending conference champion Messiah College received four first-place votes and 25 points to take the top spot in the poll, followed by Albright College (21 points, one first-place vote), Elizabethtown (14 points), Widener University (12 points), Lebanon Valley College (10 points) and Lycoming College (8 points). The Commonwealth Conference was realigned following the conclusion of last season, with the departure of Juniata College, Moravian College and Susquehanna University to the newly-formed Landmark Conference and the addition of Lycoming from the Freedom Conference.
