Back to top 11/10/2007 Union defeats Blue Jays 1-0 in NCAA opener ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S SOCCER Union Downs Elizabethtown 1-0 in NCAA Women's Soccer First-Round Match GENEVA, N.Y. --- Stephanie Cannuli scored midway through the first half as Union College defeated Elizabethtown College 1-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer tournament at William Smith College on Saturday afternoon. The Dutchmen (16-4-0 overall) advance to play Worcester State College, which defeated previously unbeaten William Smith 2-0 in Saturday's opening contest, on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays (17-4-1 overall) outshot Union 17-13 and held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks, but were unable to solve Dutchmen keeper Melissa McDonald, who made five saves in the win. Union tallied the game's only goal at 26:54 when Cannuli scored her third goal of the season off an assist by Caitlin Cuozzo. Junior Angela Freeland (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) finished with six saves in goal for the Blue Jays. Year FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Seven Named to All-Commonwealth Conference Team; Jenna Russo Selected Player of the Year ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Junior forward Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) was named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year in women's soccer to lead a group of seven Elizabethtown College players earning All-Conference honors, as voted upon by the league's six head coaches and released Thursday. Senior midfielder Jenny Fromuth (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) and senior defender Jamie Alvanitakis (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) joined Russo on the first time, while junior forward Brooke Dotterer (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts), sophomore midfielder Erin Scott (West Chester, PA/Bishop Shanahan), senior defender Emily Gunter (Hockessin, DE/A.I. duPont) and junior defender Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) were second-team choices. The Blue Jays carry a 17-3-1 overall record into the NCAA Division III tournament, where they will play Union College in a first-round match on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at William Smith College. Russo was named to the first team for the second straight season after being a second-team selection in 2005. She led the Blue Jays with 10 goals and nine assists for 29 points in 19 matches, scored at least one point in nine straight matches from Sept. 20 through Oct. 16 and registered at least one point in 15 matches this year. She is the first Blue Jay to earn conference Player of the Year honors since Dina Jingoli shared the award in 2000, and the first outright Player of the Year since Meredith Uber was honored in 1999. Fromuth, also a repeat selection to the first team, tallied seven goals and six assists while starting all 21 matches. Three of her goals were game-winners in 1-0 victories for the Blue Jays. Alvanitakis was a second-team pick last season, and picked up four assists while starting every game at right back. Three of her assists came on game-winning goals for the Blue Jays. Dotterer is a second-team selection after earning first-team honors in each of her first two years. She scored 10 goals, including five game-winners, and added seven assists for 27 points. Her hat trick gave the Blue Jays a 3-2 overtime win at Lebanon Valley on Oct. 13. Scott scored four goals and added two assists for 10 points while starting all 21 games for the Blue Jays. She scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Widener University on Oct. 20. Gunter was a first-team selection last season and started all 21 games at center back. She contributed one assist on offense, and helped the Blue Jay defense post 15 shutouts to tie a program record set in 1997. Geiger also started all 21 games at left back, and had a career day against Susquehanna University on Oct. 10 with a hat trick in a 4-0 victory. Along with Alvanitakis and Gunter, she helped the Blue Jays compile a 0.65 goals against average on the year. Messiah College claimed the other major awards, as Erin Hench was named Rookie of the Year and Scott Frey took Coach of the Year honors. Back to top 11/8/2007 Etown to face Union in NCAA first-round match FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown to Face Union in First Round of NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team will play Union (N.Y.) College in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. on the campus of William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y. The Blue Jays (17-3-1 overall) are making their second straight appearance in the NCAA playoffs and sixth in program history after earning an at-large bid following a 3-0 loss at Messiah College in the Commonwealth Conference championship match. Last year, Elizabethtown defeated Richard Stockton College and Montclair State University in overtime in the first two rounds of the tournament before falling to Virginia Wesleyan College in the third round. The Dutchwomen (15-4-0 overall) are appearing in the NCAA tournament for the eighth time in the last nine years and earned an at-large bid following a 2-1 loss to Hamilton College in the Liberty League semifinals. The winner of Saturday's match will advance to a second-round match on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against the winner of Saturday's first match between host William Smith (17-0-1 overall) and Worcester State College (14-5-0 overall). Admission is $6 for general admission, $3 for students (including college students with a valid identification) and senior citizens, $2 for children ages 3 to 12, and free for children under 3. Elizabethtown, which set school records with an 11-game winning streak and 17-game unbeaten streak this season, is led by junior Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park), who was named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year after leading the Blue Jays with 10 goals and nine assists for 29 points in 19 matches. All four defenders were named Commonwealth Conference Defender of the Week at various points during the season, along with junior goalkeeper Angela Freeland (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), who went 11-2-1 with eight shutouts and a 0.81 goals against average in 16 starts for the Blue Jays. The Dutchwomen are led by first-year student Katie McLean, who scored 13 goals and added four assists for 30 points, while sophomore Allison Cuozzo (9 goals, 7 assists for 25 points) and senior Caitlin Cuozzo (6 goals, 9 assists for 21 points) also contributed to a Union offense that averaged 2.8 goals per game. Sophomore Melissa McDonald started all 19 games in goal for the Dutchwomen and finished with seven shutouts and a 0.61 goals against average. The teams have never met in women's soccer, and share just one common opponent this season in Gettysburg College. Elizabethtown posted a 3-0 road win on Oct. 3 while Union defeated the Bullets 2-0 in the Heron Cup at William Smith on Sept. 9. Back to top 11/7/2007 Jamie Alvanitakis named second-team Academic All-District FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Jamie Alvanitakis Named Second-Team Academic All-District in Women's Soccer ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College senior Jamie Alvanitakis (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District Second Team in women's soccer, as voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Alvanitakis, a defender, is an elementary education major with a 3.80 cumulative grade-point average. She has started all 20 matches for the Blue Jays, recording four assists, and has been a key part of an Elizabethtown defense that yielded just five goals in its first 20 games and tied a school record with 15 shutouts on the season. Off the field, Alvanitakis is a member of the Kappa Delta Pi education honor society and is a College Scholar. She plans to serve as a student-teacher during the spring semester. To be nominated for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be of at least sophomore academic standing with a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or significant reserve. Back to top 11/4/2007 Etown earns NCAA tournament berth FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown Volleyball, Women's Soccer Teams Earn NCAA Division III Tournament Berths ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College volleyball and women's soccer have been selected to compete in the NCAA Division III playoffs, which begin this week. The volleyball team (31-6 overall) will compete in regional action at Haverford College, and will face Neumann College in their opening-round match at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8. Elizabethtown earned an automatic bid after winning the Commonwealth Conference postseason championship. It is the Blue Jays' first NCAA bid since 1986 and the second in program history. The women's soccer team (17-3-1 overall) will face Union College on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 1:30 p.m. in a first-round match at William Smith College. The Blue Jays received an at-large bid after advancing to the Commonwealth Conference finals. The Blue Jays will be making their second straight appearance in the NCAA tournament and the sixth overall in program history. Back to top 11/3/2007 Blue Jays blanked 3-0 at Messiah in Commonwealth finals ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S SOCCER Messiah Shuts Out Elizabethtown 3-0 to Capture Commonwealth Conference Championship GRANTHAM, Pa. --- Stef Rowe scored a pair of goals to lead Messiah College to a 3-0 victory over Elizabethtown College in the Commonwealth Conference women's soccer championship match on Saturday evening. Emily Cope added a goal for the second-ranked Falcons (19-0-0 overall), who avenged a 1-0 loss to the 17th-ranked Blue Jays in last year's title match. With the victory, Messiah earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs, while Elizabethtown (17-3-1 overall) will await an at-large bid. Rowe opened the scoring at 13:12 with an unassisted goal, and extended the Messiah lead to 2-0 at 56:12 off an assist from tournament Most Valuable Player Avie Fitzgerald. Cope added an insurance goal with 1:51 remaining in the second half with an assist to Rachel Horning. The Falcons held a 22-6 edge in shots and a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks over the Blue Jays. Men's soccer (14-5-0 overall) will play at Messiah at 1:00 p.m. in search of their second consecutive Commonwealth title. The Blue Jays, who are making their fifth straight appearance in the championship match, defeated Lycoming College 3-0 in semifinal action on Wednesday. Volleyball (30-6 overall) hosts Lebanon Valley at 2:00 p.m. looking for its first-ever conference championship in its fourth trip to the finals. The Blue Jays defeated Widener University 3-0 in the semifinals on Wednesday night to advance to the championship for the second straight year. Women's soccer (17-2-1 overall) plays at Messiah at 6:00 p.m. in a rematch of last year's title match, which the Blue Jays won by a 1-0 score. Elizabethtown earned its sixth trip to the league finals with a 3-1 win over Widener in the semifinals on Tuesday. Admission to all conference postseason events is $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for seniors and $2.00 for students while children under age 6 are admitted free. Each winner of Saturday's events is guaranteed a berth in next week's NCAA Division III playoffs. |
