Elizabethtown Sets School Record with 7-0 Start Following 77-72 Win Over Millersville

Click here for the box score

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Senior Chad Piersol (Elverson, PA/Owen J. Roberts) drilled a tiebreaking three-pointer with 39 seconds remaining as Elizabethtown College improved to 7-0 for the first time in program history with a 77-72 victory over Division II Millersville University in men's basketball action on Wednesday night.

Piersol finished with a game-high 22 points for the Blue Jays, who squandered a 20-point second-half lead before rallying for the victory over the Marauders (5-1 overall). The 1996-97 squad held the previous school record by winning its first six games.

Charlie Parker scored 20 of his game-high 24 points in the second half for Millersville while adding six rebounds, six assists and five steals while Reggie Bates added 18 points and 10 rebounds, but the Marauders were plagued by 23 turnovers which led to 28 Blue Jay points.

Senior Mike Schatzmann (Paradise, PA/Pequea Valley) added 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists and sank the clinching foul shots with 1.7 seconds to go for Elizabethtown, which led 57-37 with 12:28 remaining before Millersville went on a 29-8 run to go ahead 66-65 on a three-pointer by Bates with 2:31 left.

Schatzmann hit two of three free throws to restore Elizabethtown's lead at 67-66 with 2:07 to go, but Makal Stibbins dunked a rebound to put Millersville back ahead 68-67 with 1:51 to play.

The Blue Jays regained the lead with 1:14 to go as first-year student Keith Fogel (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg) hit a 25-foot three-pointer to beat the shot clock and give Etown a 70-68 lead, but Millersville knotted the score for the final time at 70-70 on a layup by Charlie Parker with 58 seconds to go.

Following the go-ahead three-pointer by Piersol, Millersville moved back within one at 73-72 on a putback by Justin Simmons with 25 seconds left. The Blue Jays restored their three-point lead at 75-72 on a breakaway layup by sophomore Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) with 20 seconds left.

Without a timeout, Millersville looked for a game-tying three-pointer but Bates misfired with four seconds to go, and Schatzmann collared the rebound and nailed both foul shots to seal the win.

Elizabethtown seemed to have the game in control, leading 57-37 with 12:28 to play. However, Millersville went on a 13-0 run over a three-minute span to pull within 57-50 with 9:34 left.

A three-pointer by Piersol pushed the Blue Jays on top 63-56 with 6:30 to go, but back-to-back buckets by Bates and Parker followed by a three-pointer by Parker tied the game at 63-63 with 3:33 to go.

Church finished with 14 points and nine rebounds for the Blue Jays, while Fogel tallied 10 points in 13 minutes off the bench. Senior Bryce Rodgers (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) added eight points and a career-high nine rebounds for Etown, which was outrebounded by the taller Marauders by a slim 40-39 margin.

Millersville shot 47.5 percent (29-for-61) from the field in the contest, while Elizabethtown hit just 39.4 percent (26-for-66) as a team. The Blue Jays went 20-for-27 from the foul line while the Marauders hit 10-for-17 at the stripe.
