Albright Edges Elizabethtown 6-5 in Ten Innings; Tom Semanek & Jared Morris Belt Home Runs

READING, Pa. --- Albright College defeated Elizabethtown College 6-5 in ten innings in a Commonwealth Conference nine-inning scheduled game in Reading Friday night. The loss drops the Blue Jays to 3-1 in the conference and 9-6 overall, and it means that the Blue Jays remain two wins away from becoming the first Elizabethtown College athletics program to reach the 1,000 all-time win mark. Albright improves to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the Commonwealth with the win.

Albright took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out, two-RBI double by Tim Conner (West Chester, PA/Henderson) that scored Jeff Kulp (Kintnersville, PA/Palisades) and Chad Mackey (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) in a pair of unearned runs.

The Blue Jays struck back right away with four runs on a grand slam in the top of the second to take a 4-2 lead. Dean Whetham (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) led off with a single, and Brandon Watson (Philadelphia, PA/Central) and Adam Sheibley (Landisburg, PA/West Perry) followed with singles to load the bases with no outs. Tom Semanek (Swoyersville, PA/Bishop Hoban) then stepped up to the plate and belted his first home run of the season to clear the bases. Semanek’s grand slam was also the first home run by any Elizabethtown player this season.

Elizabethtown stretched its lead to 5-2 in the top of the fourth inning as Jared Morris (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) blasted a solo home run to lead off the inning.

Albright cut the gap to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth as Mackey singled with one out, stole second, and went home on an RBI single by Kulp.

In the bottom of the eighth, Albright scored twice to tie the game 5-5. Derek Althouse (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) hit a one-out double, and he scored on a pinch-hit RBI single by Andrew Sieracki (Hatboro, PA/Archbishop Wood). Dylan Saldutti (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) pinch-ran for Sieracki, and he ultimately scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Dunkelberger (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin).

The game went into extra innings after neither team scored in the ninth inning, and Albright won it in the bottom of the tenth as Kyle Wenrich (Reading, PA/Reading) drew a lead-off walk and scored on a single by Kulp.

At the plate for Elizabethtown, Morris batted 3-for-4 for the game with a home run, a run and an RBI. Semanek hit 1-for-4 with a home run, a run and four RBI. Elizabethtown Sweeps Lebanon Valley 13-5 and 1-0; Blue Jays Two Wins from 1,000

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College swept Lebanon Valley College 13-5 and 1-0 in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at home Monday to improve to 9-4 overall and 3-0 in the conference. The wins bring the Elizabethtown baseball program two away from becoming the College’s first athletics program to reach the 1,000 all-time victory mark. The Elizabethtown varsity intercollegiate baseball program, which began play in 1930, is currently 998-699-10 all-time.

Monday’s games, which were the make-ups of games originally rained out Saturday, were supposed to have been played at Lebanon Valley, but they were moved to Elizabethtown this morning due to unplayable field conditions at LVC. Although the games were held at Elizabethtown, Lebanon Valley was the home team for both games. Lebanon Valley dropped to 1-10 overall and 0-3 in the Commonwealth Conference with the losses.

In the first game, Elizabethtown stormed out to a 10-0 led by the middle of the third inning. Mike Donahue (Hatfield, PA/Lansdale Catholic) batted 3-for-5 with a double, three runs and three RBI, and Ryan White (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) hit 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI for Etown. Dean Whetham (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) went 1-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored, and Brandon Watson (Philadelphia, PA/Central) hit 2-for-5 with a double, a run and an RBI. Adam Sheibley (Landisburg, PA/West Perry) went 2-for-5 with a triple, one run and two RBI for Etown, and Rodney Francis (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Matt Vinagro (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) batted 1-for-3 and scored two runs. Elizabethtown starting pitcher Sam Heaps (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) improved to 3-1 on the season with the win.

In the second game, Elizabethtown and Lebanon Valley remained locked in a 0-0 tie through the regulation seven innings. In the top of the eighth, Etown finally broke the stalemate. Jared Auman (Northumberland, PA/Shikellamy) drew a one-out walk, and Whetham followed with a single to move him to second base. Auman then went to third on a wild pitch. Watson grounded into a fielder’s choice upon which Whetham was out at second, but Auman scored on the play. Etown starting pitcher Matt Kutz (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff) went seven innings and allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out two en route to his first win of the season. Reliever Andy Mees (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) entered the game with no outs and a runner on first in the bottom of the eighth, and he got the next three Lebanon Valley batters out for his third save of the season.

Elizabethtown will return to action on the road Tuesday, March 27 against Rowan University in a 3:00 p.m. non-conference game in pursuit of all-time win number 999.

Jared Morris (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) followed with a fielder’s choice that drove home Whetham, while Watson was out at third on the play. The bases were loaded again with one out when Rodney Francis (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) reached on an error. A balk by Lebanon Valley pitcher Matt Sanders (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona) sent home Sheibley.

In the top of the eighth, Lebanon Valley scored a pair of runs to tie the game 3-3. Kopchick led off with a single. Dan Kelly (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion) followed with a sacrifice bunt, and he wound up on second base and Kopchick ended up on third as the result of a throwing error. Corey Lamoureux (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) followed with a single that drove home Kopchick and sent Kelly to third. With one out, a fielder’s choice by John Mentzer (Myerstown, PA/ELCO) sent home Kelly for the tying run.

Elizabethtown rallied right back with a run in the bottom of the eighth, as Watson drove the first pitch to the right-center field wall for a stand-up triple. Sheibley followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Watson, and that turned out to be the game-winning run, making the score 4-3.
