Note: Home game programs available as Adobe PDF downloads Back to top 8/31/2007 Blue Jays picked third in commonwealth conference pre-season coachs' poll FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown College Field Hockey Team Picked Third in Commonwealth Conference Preseason Coaches Poll ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team has been picked to finish third in the Commonwealth Conference in a preseason poll of the league’s five head coaches, the conference office announced Tuesday. The Blue Jays received 16 points in the survey to place third behind defending conference champion Lebanon Valley College (20 points, three first-place votes) and defending NCAA Division III runner-up Messiah College (18 points, two first-place votes). Widener University (12 points) and Albright College (9 points) finished out the rankings. Elizabethtown finished 16-6 overall last season and qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time since 1988. Head coach Sharon Sweger was recognized by her peers as the Commonwealth Conference Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. The Blue Jays make their 2007 season debut on Friday, Aug. 31 against College Misericordia in the opening game of the Mule Classic at Muhlenberg College. Back to top 8/31/2007 Elizabethtown opens 2007 season with 3-0 win over Misericordia ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY Elizabethtown Defeats Misericordia 3-0 ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- First-year player Liz DeMatteis (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) scored a pair of goals in her first collegiate contest to lead 15th-ranked Elizabethtown College to a 3-0 victory over Misericordia University on the opening day of the Mule Classic at Muhlenberg College on Friday afternoon. DeMatteis gave the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead with 21:05 elapsed in the contest as she scored off a long hit, and added her second goal of the match with 19:28 remaining as she tipped in a pass from fellow first-year player Julie Foster (Reading, PA/Oley Valley). Elizabethtown (1-0) closed out the scoring in the match with 11:45 left as junior Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep) deflected home a long hit from junior Tiffany Vogel (Annville, PA/Palmyra). The Blue Jays, who defeated the Cougars (0-1) by an identical 3-0 score in last year's season opener, finished with a 15-3 edge in shots and took seven penalty corners compared to five by Misericordia. Sophomore Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) made her first career start in goal for the Blue Jays, and did not need to make a save in order to record the shutout. Heather Heun made seven stops in the cage for Misericordia. The Blue Jays will face host Muhlenberg Saturday at 1:00 p.m. on the final day of the Mule Classic. Misericordia (0-1) vs. Elizabethtown (1-0) Shots: Misericordia 3, Elizabethtown 15 Back to top 8/22/2007 Etown tied for 15th in NFHCA pre-season poll for NCAA Division III FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown College Field Hockey Team Tied for 15th in NFHCA Division III Preseason Poll ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team is tied for 15th in the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Preseason Coaches Poll, the NFHCA has announced. The Blue Jays, who are tied with Springfield College in the survey, were ranked 15th in the final poll of the 2006 season after finishing 16-6 overall and qualifying for the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time since 1988. Defending national champion Ursinus College received 20 of the 30 first-place votes to gain the top spot in the poll, followed by Messiah College, Bowdoin College, SUNY Cortland and The College of New Jersey. A total of four teams that are ranked in the preseason poll appear on the Blue Jays’ 2007 schedule, including Ursinus, Messiah, eighth-ranked Lebanon Valley College and 14 th-ranked Juniata College. The Blue Jays make their 2007 season debut on Friday, Aug. 31 against Misericordia University in the opening game of the Mule Classic at Muhlenberg College. |
