Herr Field on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Brooke Dotterer (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) scored in the first half while first-year student Paige Minka (Avondale, PA/Kennett) added a second-half tally for the Blue Jays (9-1-1 overall), who outshot the Devils (4-6-0 overall) by a 16-1 margin. Elizabethtown took a 1-0 lead with 26:27 left in the first half as Dotterer took a pass from junior Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) and fired home her fourth goal of the season.
In the second half, Minka tallied her first goal of the season with 16:20 to go as she headed home a corner kick by senior Jamie Alvanitakis (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead. Junior Angela Freeland (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) did not need to make a save to record her fourth shutout of the season for the Blue Jays, while Amanda Buyes made six stops for the Devils. The goal by DeMatteis, her fourth of the season, came with 6:16 left in the first overtime period as she batted home a pass by sophomore Brenna Noon (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) to give the Blue Jays (7-3 overall) their fifth consecutive victory. King's (5-3 overall), which dropped its third straight after winning its first five matches of the year, had tied the game just 1:12 into the second half as Megan Farrell scored off an assist by Grace King. The Blue Jays had taken a 1-0 lead with 14:40 left in the first half as junior Alison Duval (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) scored her second goal of the season as she took a long shot off a corner by junior Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley). Senior Hunter Gross (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) was the team's top finisher as he shot a 78 to finish in third place. First-year student Geoff Quinque (Green Lane, PA/Upper Perkiomen) carded a 79 to take fourth while sophomore Kurt Amen (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) tied for 10th with a round of 83. MARY'S CITY, Md. --- Junior Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) scored a goal and dished out an assist as Elizabethtown College extended its unbeaten streak to nine matches with a 3-1 win at St. Mary's College in non-conference women's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon. Junior Carly Hoskins (Bangor, PA/Bangor) added a penalty-kick goal while junior Brooke Dotterer (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) also scored for the Blue Jays (8-1-1 overall), who led 3-0 before the Seahawks (4-5 overall) scored with 23:08 left in the second half to snap the Blue Jays' streak of consecutive scoreless minutes at 824 minutes, 52 seconds. Gunter continues to anchor one of the top defenses in Division III, as the Blue Jays posted three more shutouts last week to extend their streak of consecutive shutouts to eight. Elizabethtown tied nationally-ranked York College 0-0 on Tuesday, and followed with 3-0 wins over Delaware Valley College and Wesley College to end the week. Gunter, who played 256 of the Blue Jays’ 290 minutes last week, helped to limit Etown’s opponents to just 19 total shots, including nine shots on goal. On Saturday, the Blue Jays shut down a Wesley offense that had scored 10 or more goals four times this season by allowing just two harmless shots. The Blue Jays (7-1-1 overall) carry an eight-game unbeaten streak into Tuesday's non-conference match at St. Mary's (Md.).Back to top 9/24/2007 Megan Angstadt and Liz Hannegan earn Commonwealth Conference honors FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Megan Angstadt and Liz Hannegan Sweep Commonwealth Conference Field Hockey Honors ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College junior Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) and sophomore Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) were honored by the Commonwealth Conference after leading the Blue Jays to three straight victories in field hockey last week. Angstadt was selected as the conference Player of the Week while Hannegan was recognized as the Goalie of the Week for the second time this season as the Blue Jays posted three wins in as many matches, including the 500th win in program history over Kean University on Saturday. Angstadt scored three goals and dished out three assists to lead the Blue Jay offense. Two of her goals were game-winners, including an overtime goal in 3-2 win at Swarthmore College on Thursday. Angstadt posted at least one point in all three matches and was involved in six of the Blue Jays’ eight goals for the week. Hannegan earned shutouts in two of her three wins last week, and in all she allowed two goals in 216 minutes of action while making nine saves. For the season, Hannegan has recorded four shutouts and has a 1.28 goals against average. The leading player for the Blue Jays was junior Mike Wagner (Allentown, PA/William Allen), who shot a 76 to tie for 13th place. First-year student Nick Iacono (Hockessin, DE/Sanford School) carded a 79 to finish in a tie for 23rd place, and senior Hunter Gross (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) finished with an 81 to tie for 32nd place. Franklin & Marshall College shot 294 to win the team championship, followed by York College (307) and Messiah College (308). Back to top 9/23/2007 Blue Jays compete at ITA Southeast Regional ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S TENNIS Elizabethtown Women's Tennis Competes at ITA Southeast Regional Championships FREDERICKSBURG, Va. --- Members of the Elizabethtown College women's tennis team participated at the Wilson ITA Southeast Regional Championships on the campus of the University of Mary Washington during the weekend. In the championship singles draw, sophomore Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Nathalie Faure in her first match before losing 6-0, 6-0 to third-seeded Stephanie Kurti in a second-round match. Senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) lost 7-5, 6-2 to Nicole Andreini in her opening match, and fell 8-2 to fourth-seeded Brittnay Mataya in her first consolation match, while junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match to Amanda Schubert in the opening round and fell 8-5 to Morgan Martin in the first round of consolations. In the blue singles draw, first-year student Minke Albers (The Netherlands) fell 6-0, 6-1 to Anne Ailstock in the first round, then defeated Kaitlyn Garcia 8-3 in the first round of consolations before falling 8-0 to Erica Wood in the second consolation round. First-year student Angela Cairns (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) also competed in blue singles and dropped her opening match to Debbie Blass 6-0, 6-0. She then defeated Emily Schutze 8-3 in the opening round of consolation before falling 8-3 to Robyn Wendell in round two. In championship doubles, Smith and Yu were seeded sixth and fell 8-2 to Blass and Julia Guarino in round one. In the consolation bracket, they defeated Rebecca Commito and Alexis Hickman 8-2 in the first round before falling 8-6 to Courtney Goimarac and Kate Malpeli in the quarterfinals. Albers and Swarr defeated Maggie Bai and Faure 9-8 (8-4) in round one before falling 8-0 to third-seeded Jennifer Chui and Amy Staloch in round two. Senior Jenny Fromuth (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) scored her sixth goal of the season while first-year students Kelly Fisher (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) and Mallory Murphy (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) added their first career tallies, while the Blue Jay defense posted its eighth consecutive shutout and extended its streak of consecutive scoreless minutes to 758. Elizabethtown (7-1-1 overall) got on the scoreboard just 2:21 into the match as a short pass by sophomore Christina Sheppard (Millville, NJ/Millville) went to Fisher, who fired home the game's opening goal. Fromuth pushed the Blue Jay lead to 2-0 at the 13-minute mark when she took a pass from junior Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) and extended her team lead in goals with her sixth of the year.
Murphy finished off the scoring with 9:36 left in the first half when she picked up the rebound of a shot by junior Jordan Leggett (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove) and found the open net to give the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead. First-year student Elyse Carabello (Reading, PA/Exeter Twp.) added her first career goal in the second half as the Blue Jays (6-1-1 overall) extended their own school record with their seventh consecutive shutout. The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead with 27:41 left in the first half as Russo took a quick through pass from Fromuth and found the back of the net for her third goal of the season. Elizabethtown extended its lead to 2-0 with 28:33 left in the second half as Fromuth corralled a loose ball in the box and knocked home her fifth goal of the season. Carabello capped the scoring with 16:44 to go as she took a cross by Russo and blasted home her first goal.
The Blue Jays finished with a 22-6 edge in shots over the Aggies (2-6-0 overall) and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. The number two match of senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and Leslie Sabas and the number four match between first-year student Minke Albers (The Netherlands) and Charissa Nordall were halted after the players split the first two sets. The Blue Jays (5-1-1 overall) posted their sixth consecutive shutout to set a program record while playing in their second consecutive double-overtime game. The Spartans (5-2-1 overall), ranked 22nd in the latest D3kicks.com Top 25 poll, were shut out for the first time this season. Elizabethtown had the game's two best scoring chances in a 45-second span early in the second half, as junior Jenna Russo hit the crossbar and sophomore Erin Scott fired a shot off the post. The Blue Jays finished with a 15-11 edge in shots, while the Spartans held an 8-5 edge in corner kicks. Angstadt and Noon scored first-half goals while DeMatteis added a second-half tally for the Blue Jays (4-3 overall), who did not allow any shots by the Lady Colonels (2-4 overall). Angstadt gave the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead with 12:41 left in the first half as she knocked home a rebound, with DeMatteis picking up the assist. Noon pushed the Elizabethtown lead to 2-0 with 7:10 left in the half as she took a pass from Angstadt on a fast break and fired home her third goal of the season. DeMatteis rounded out the scoring with 1:24 to play as she picked up her third goal of the year when she batted home a shot by Noon. Elizabethtown finished with a 7-2 edge in penalty corners over Wilkes, and took all 12 shots in the contest. First-year student Geoff Quinque (Green Lane, PA/Upper Perkiomen) was the Blue Jays' top finisher as he shot an 80, with senior Hunter Gross (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) and junior Mike Wagner (Allentown, PA/William Allen) following at 83. The Blue Jay "B" squad also competed at the meet and finished 10th, with first-year student Nick Iacono (Hockessin, DE/Sanford School) carding the low round of the day with an 80. Fromuth converted on a pass by junior Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) to give the Blue Jays (5-1-0 overall) their fifth straight victory, all by shutout. Three of those wins have been by 1-0 scores, with Fromuth scoring the winning goal in all three victories. The Blue Jays have recorded five straight shutouts for the first time since 1997, when they had four wins and a tie, and have posted five consecutive shutout wins for the first time in program history. Elizabethtown fired 18 shots at goal compared to nine shots by the Lady Royals (1-5-1 overall), but Scranton held a 10-1 edge in corner kicks. Herr Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Junior Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) and sophomore Erin Scott (West Chester, PA/Bishop Shanahan) also scored for the Blue Jays (4-1-0 overall), who have recorded four straight shutouts for the first time since 1997 and notched four consecutive shutout wins for the first time since 1991. Russo gave the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead with 29:45 left in the first half as she took a pass from Dotterer and found the back of the net. Geiger was named to the All-Tournament Team after anchoring a Blue Jay defense that allowed just six shots and no goals en route to winning the Days Inn Classic at SUNY-Fredonia over the weekend. Led by Geiger, Elizabethtown held Mount Union to two shots in a 2-0 win on Friday, and limited host SUNY-Fredonia to four shots in a 1-0 victory on Saturday. Back to top 9/1/2007 Blue jays defeat Muhlenberg 3-2 in double overtime in goal by Katy Boone ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY Elizabethtown Rallies for 3-2 Double-Overtime ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- Sophomore Katy Boone (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg) tallied the game-winning goal with 7:57 left in double overtime to lift 15th-ranked Elizabethtown College to a 3-2 victory over host Muhlenberg College in field hockey action on Saturday afternoon. Boone deflected in a shot from sophomore Caitlin Smith (Haddonfield, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) to give the Blue Jays (2-0 overall) the win after junior Alison Duval (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) had forced overtime on a goal with 6:16 left in the second half. Muhlenberg (1-1) opened the scoring with 11:25 left in the first half as Kelly Shetron tipped in a shot from Nikki Rhoads, but Elizabethtown evened the score at 1-1 less than two minutes later as junior Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep) deflected home a shot by junior Tiffany Vogel (Annville, PA/Palmyra) for her first goal of the season. The Mules regained the lead at 2-1 less than five minutes into the second half as Jillian Duffy corralled a loose ball and deposited it into the cage, but the Blue Jays battled back to tie on Duval's goal. Elizabethtown finished with a 17-15 edge in shots, though Muhlenberg held a 9-2 advantage in overtime. The Mules took nine penalty corners compared to six by the Blue Jays, including four of the five awarded in overtime. Sophomore Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) earned her second win in as many starts by making eight saves in goal for the Blue Jays, while Michelle Consiglio tallied nine stops for the Mules.
